The article brings up the issue of changes occurring in China as regards the concept of family, ways to build relationships and establish partnerships as well as sexuality in the context of historical and socio-political conditions. Although starting up a family remains the most important goal for most Chinese, for various reasons it is very difficult or even impossible to accomplish. This results from not only opening the country to the Western culture and taking up the new lifestyle, but also other factors, the most attention-drawing of which is the promotion of gender equality, adopted already during the rule of Mao Zedong, recently concluded one-child policy and pending economic transition. Moreover, in the country where an open political debate is impossible, sexual identities and expression of one’s individuality or distinctiveness is a way of questioning the fixed social status quo.
