Smart Architecture

This dissertation explores the actual meaning and implication of the term 'smart city' being used in the current era worldwide and as it comes to the Indian context, it investigates the role of an architect in building such cities.
To completely understand the concept of smart city, it was deemed crucial to investigate the history of this phrase and how it is being used around the globe, taking the example of existing smart cities such as Amsterdam and Philadelphia through a secondary research analysis. Later it also became essential to have a critical analysis of the new-fangled green field project, the GIFT city in Gujarat, which is proclaimed to be the first 'smart city' on the Indian soil.
With the help  of the above mentioned studies as references, this paper then focuses on the field of architecture where it identifies their role models, the leverages and the challenges faced by an architect dealing within the spectrum of designing a building or a public realm that should be viable enough for such technologically advanced cities. To identify whether a native architect is ready to face the challenge of making his city the most productive amongst other cities of the country.

The recent decades have witnessed the widespread manifestation of intelligent building design development around the world. Meanwhile, the concept of smart buildings has stimulated various architects and designers to make use of it for the sake of sustainable building. Intelligence is described as " the adaptaption with the surrounding environment " , while Intelligent Buildings is defined as " It is a sustainable in terms of energy, and water consumptions besides being slowly polluting in terms of emissions and waste, healthy in terms of well-being for the people living and working within, and functional according to the user needs " [1]. The research paper has taken this definition as a point of departure in the subsequent formulation of research objectives and approaches to the study. It focuses on the gap in defining and applying the expression of " Smart Architecture " between theory and practice especially in developing countries, owing to the lack of deep consideration of the available technology and local materials for ensuring the appropriateness as come of the main objectives of the sustainable smart architecture designs. The study proposes the concept of " Local Smart Architecture " based on the available technology in less developed countries. It aims to prove that it is not important to own High Technology to build Smart Building, through exploring two Egyptian case studies, which are the architecture of poor in Gourna City by Hassan Fathy, and Architecture of Bedouins in Siwa Oasis. The research ends up with the concept of Local Smart Architecture through utilization of appropriate vernacular architectural features in smart buildings design in order to achieve sustainability.

The city is the economic and social life, as in the range of human abode, food and so on. The heights of the dependence of man, his various powers of the time to have done, and by the desire to consolidate and bring to the life of the necessary coordination with the villages thereof, and in the nature of necessity and for a dwelling-place and information to build the human environment. In all, according to the nature of the species, and the culture and civilization of the difference, and principal users, as one element in the human city, and that the beneficiaries of the effective element of his own. Unfortunately, irregular to pass out to the cities, especially the metropolises made us to increase of faces, to provide the service, and to the many questions of the citizens. Smart of this question in recent decades, a number of strategies for the solution of the great circles that was offered in the academic plans. That is powerful, smart electronic city and citizens of continuous service users, but unlike electronic city so residents know each client, users smart and play the role of the citizens of the city, the head of the fountain. Unlike the electronic city, only to meet the needs of the citizens of the city had no pain, but in the interaction cycle, is exposed to the knowledge of the heads of men, and were out of the city, provide services in the city, which is done in the way of life of the urban development. On the other hand, it should be noted, because of the large and the density of the high places of the cities of the time, already in the cities which have no matter to work on the administration of the traditional methods of the town is rather moderate. This study tries to explain the history of the electronic city, he laid the city: and the sorrow of mourning in the city. In this study, we found an expert to other learned men proceeded so far, better to use.

This paper explores about retrofitting of the existing buildings through smart and innovative
ways which can adapt the buildings by means of responsive architecture to improve Indoor
Environmental Quality (IEQ). In order to meet the requirements of performance for a built
environment, optimum values of the indoor environment should be considered as the most
important factor. Responsive Building Elements (RBEs) are one of the most important design
parameters for improving the efficiency of energy and IEQ. This paper reviews examples of
responsive and smart architecture and its building elements. In a first step, the paper gives an
overview of the research responsive architecture focusing on aspects that are most relevant
for the development of the indoor environment in terms of environmental factors.

Smart Architecture is considered as the most prominent aspects of new millennium. It depends on using modern techniques and information technology, working in an integrated manner so that the building performed its function in time. Water Cube has become an icon of a 'new Beijing' in the short time since its opening. This paper examines how Beijing tried to use smart components to fight its spatial and environmental problems, and create a new image for novel and appropriate smart building. So Beijing Water Cube has been identified in terms of general information about historical background, its construction, and its basic smart component (Smart materials-Smart skin-Smart structure-Smart Systems), reaching to learned lessons towards novel and appropriate smart buildings.

One of the basic tenets of humanistic inquiry is that intellectual and artistic production should be aimed at understanding, exploring, and building a society's zeitgeist.  In this view, it is the pro-active making and critique of culture and not a re-active posture which ought to occupy committed people.

In architecture, this issue increasingly dominates contemporary reflections.  What is the architecture of and for the information revolution / age / society ?  Is it possible to honestly maintain a material and traditional understanding of architecture in a world increasingly dominated by disembodied, electronic information ?  Can we approach architecture from an informational paradigm ?

Although architecture possesses an informational nature,  there is a big gap between this fact and seeing architecture as an information construct.  Further still is trying to transform buildings into artifacts fully responsive to (driven by) information flows.  The major problem lies in the stable nature of matter once it has been formed.  The act of building freezes certain kinds of information in time which then preclude the displays of other, new information.  In other words, constructions neither have nor respond to the fluid nature of information.  Or do they?

If one cannot deny the material stability of constructions, one can argue against their representational stability.  After all electronic technologies provide us with artifacts that defy the representational stability of matter.  Television sets and computers are good examples.  The screen makes these artifacts' presence (i.e. their materiality, fixed information) far less important than what they present (i.e. representations, fluid information).  At issue is not what happen behind or around but on their screens.  Quite simply, the function of TVs and computers is not to be pieces of furniture or machinery but windows to the virtual world of information.  The true power of these constructions is not their technological might but their ability to sustain media events.  Considering that it is mediated reality upon which post-industrial life depends, it seems natural that material stability is surrendered to the power of fleeting, foreign representations.

If Modernity used the machine as the metaphor to guide its quest for an architecture of and for the industrial age, can't we use the prime technologies and media of the information revolution as ours?  This paper explores one possible direction: the creation of an architecture of screens.

‘Green Memes’ proposes an online social network and local kiosks for people to learn about energy consumption Based on electricity data collected from smart grids, meters and sensors, data visualizations depict consumption per building, per person and at many other scales. A social networking function is attached to these — text messages, or ‘green memes’, invite users to engage wit energy-savings advice, current event and sustainability research. Accessible online, through mobile devices, or installed locally, Green Memes combines ‘hard data’ with the ‘soft power’ of personalized information, public opinion and faceto- face communication. The project is currently seeking partners to further develop the system and interface design.
