Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance that starts with the exploration and investigation of movement,
taking physical contact points as a base, while proposing a different way of understanding interper- sonal proximity, characterized by the inhibition of its sexualized component It is precisely in this combi- nation that it finds its maximum tension: it takes as its basis the contact -often intimate- of the bodies,
while proposing an alternative interpretation for it. The tension is experienced most strongly by women
and becomes visible as the problem of setting the limit. This paper analyzes, based on ethnographic
evidence produced in CI classes in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (Argentina), the way in which
the incorporation of a non-strictly artistic discourse -more typical of work, learning spaces and disci- pline- operates as a regulator of the mentioned tension, by contributing to the inhibition of the sexed
interpretation of corporal contact; we will show that the pedagogical space of the CI even allows to
elaborate traumas.

The iconoclastic ingenuity of bohemians, from Gerard de Nerval to Allen Ginsberg, continually captivates the popular imagination; the worlds of fashion, advertising, and even real estate all capitalize on the alternative appeal of bohemian style. Persistently overlooked, however, is bohemians' distinctive relationship to work. In this book, sociologist Judith R. Halasz examines the fascinating junctures between bohemian labor and life. Weaving together historiography, ethnography, and personal experiences of having been raised amidst downtown New York's bohemian communities, Halasz deciphers bohemians' unconventional behaviors and attitudes towards employment and the broader work world. From the nineteenth-century harbingers on Paris' Left Bank to the Beats, Underground, and more recent bohemian outcroppings on New York's Lower East Side, The Bohemian Ethos traces the embodiment of a politically charged yet increasingly precarious form of cultural resistance to hegemonic social and economic imperatives. If institutions are "the more enduring features of social life" (Giddens, The Constitution of Society, 1984), then how do they come into being? What kinds of collective practices and intersubjective aspirations bring them about, and how do they maintain them? This article investigates these questions through the lens of instituting processes, that is, practices that structure and underpin institutional formations. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork with the Theater an der Ruhr, a public theatre in the German post-industrial Ruhr valley, this article examines the role of rehearsals as a key instituting practice in theatres. In this case study, the ideals and actions associated with long-term rehearsals serve not merely a professional purpose as principal form of artistic labour; rather, rehearsals constitute the aesthetic, ethical, and political modus operandi of the institution. As the core work of art in the institution, rehearsals facilitate the long-term development of a collective aesthetic in an ensemble as well as the ethical cultivation of actors' artistic sensibilities. This article thereby also examines how the theatre conceptualises collective rehearsing as a political practice by distinguishing it from the project-based and flexible modalities propagated by post-Fordist policies in the arts. Artistic critique is articulated through and not against the formation of an institution. Based on this account, this article proposes to treat artistic institutions and instituting processes as significant subjects of anthropological research and as prisms for the study of aesthetic, ethical, and political practices.

La lumière, il faut la créer » me disait le premier technicien qui m'a fait visiter les espaces techniques. «Attention à la tête ! Il faut que vous appreniez à voir dans l'obscurité… », me disait-il au moment de marcher dans une coulisse. «Electros [1]! S'il vous plaît, lumière de travail ici ! », criait-il vers le plateau et la salle noire où je ne repérais personne. Ce jour-là j'appris qu'éclairer et obscurcir sont deux actions que font les « électros » dans l'espace théâtral, et que si je voulais comprendre leur travail, je devais savoir comment ils font les choses au quotidien et apprendre à voir, à sentir, à vivre comme eux, dans cet environnement instable, amovible, toujours en mouvement, toujours en expérimentation et aux résultats incertains. Le sol, les murs, le toit ou le ciel, le jour, la nuit, la pluie, la mer, tout est créé constamment à partir d'un vide et du noir. Le temps et l'espace prennent une autre dimension. La lumière y est l'un des ingrédients indispensables à la création de ces mondes imaginaires dans l'acte théâtral qui fait rêver le public.

Podstawowym celem badań była identyfikacja strategii
podejmowanych przez działające w Polsce instytucje teatralne
w czasie pandemii. Interesowało nas zarówno to, w jakiej sytuacji
podmioty tego rodzaju znalazły się po decyzji Ministra Kultury
i Dziedzictwa Narodowego z 12 marca 2020 roku o czasowym
zamknięciu instytucji kultury z powodu zagrożenia dla życia
i zdrowia spowodowanego rozpowszechnianiem się w Polsce wirusa
SARS-CoV-2, jak i to, w jaki sposób na nią zareagowały, co sprawiało
im największą trudność, z czym zaś radziły sobie bardzo dobrze;
czy w czasie lockdownu koncentrowały się tylko na swoich problemach czy też na problemach innych, a także, co te reakcje
umożliwiało. Ważnymi pytaniami, na które chcieliśmy uzyskać
odpowiedź, były również te dotyczące obecnych w środowisku
teatralnym form współdziałania i współpracy, przecinających je
osi sporów i konfliktów, a także nowych form inicjatyw wewnątrzśrodowiskowych, które uruchomiła pandemia. Mieliśmy nadzieję,
że z odpowiedzi na te pytania zrekonstruujemy sytuację, w jakiej
znalazły się teatry w czasie pandemii, a także przybliżymy jej
specyfikę, a co za tym idzie – zbierzemy informacje mogące być
podstawą udzielania tego typu podmiotom efektywnej pomocy.
Warto podkreślić, że naszymi respondentami i respondentkami
były osoby kierujące instytucjami teatralnymi w Polsce (najczęściej
byli to dyrektorzy i dyrektorki, w wyjątkowych sytuacjach ich zastępcy
lub zastępczynie). Oznacza to, że pozyskiwaliśmy informacje o sytuacji
teatrów w okresie pandemii od osób, które mają najszerszą na ten
temat wiedzę oraz które muszą, z racji pełnionej funkcji, orientować
się we wszystkich aspektach działania podległych im instytucji,
ale także których sposób myślenia i oceny bieżącej sytuacji stanowi
jeden z czynników reagowania na nią w przyszłości. Osoby te jednak
nie reprezentowały wszystkich postaw wobec pandemii obecnych
wśród ludzi teatru z tej prostej przyczyny, że zajmują wśród nich
zaledwie jedną z wielu możliwych pozycji. To z kolei powoduje,
że nie można poczynionych w tym raporcie ustaleń traktować jako
wyczerpującego obrazu sytuacji, w jakiej znalazł się teatr po ogłoszeniu
decyzji o czasowym zamknięciu instytucji kultury. Ustalenia te powinny
być uzupełniane przez analizę informacji pozyskanych od innych osób
obecnych w polu teatralnym w Polsce i to pole współtworzących.
Badania miały charakter dwuetapowy i wykorzystywały metody
zarówno ilościowe, jak jakościowe. Przeprowadzono je w dwu turach.
Pierwsza, zrealizowana pomiędzy 25 maja a 26 czerwca 2020 roku,
to badania sondażowe przeprowadzone w technice CAWI przy użyciu
kwestionariusza dystrybuowanego przez system Webankieta,
do którego wypełnienia zaproszono prowadzących wszystkie instytucje
teatralne obecne w bazie Instytutu Teatralnego. Druga tura to wywiady
indywidualne prowadzone zdalnie z kierującymi instytucjami teatralnymi, a wybranymi spośród tych, którzy wzięli udział w pierwszej
fazie badań. Wywiady te prowadzono pomiędzy 16 a 30 czerwca.
Niniejszy raport zawiera ustalenia poczynione podczas analizy
zgromadzonych w trakcie badań informacji. Podzieliśmy go na cztery
zasadnicze części: I. Informacja o badaniach (ta część zawiera opis
badań, prezentację ich założeń i sposobu prowadzenia, charakterystykę próby i kryteria jej doboru); II. Najważniejsze ustalenia badawcze
(tu zamieściliśmy syntetyczną prezentację najważniejszych wniosków
poczynionych podczas analizy materiału badawczego); III. Wyniki
analizy informacji pozyskanych w trakcie badań sondażowych
(w tej części czytelnik znajdzie przedstawienie prawidłowości uchwyconych dzięki analizie informacji pozyskanych dzięki badaniom CAWI);
IV. Wyniki analiz informacji pozyskanych w trakcie wywiadów
indywidualnych (w tej części raportu zamieściliśmy ustalenia poczynione podczas analizy wywiadów indywidualnych z prowadzącymi
instytucje teatralne).

On Sept. 6th 2018 at the University of Malta (Department of Sociology) my talk at the European Sociological Association conference is entitled "Women Visual Artists from the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) after the Fall of the Berlin Wall: From Identity Loss to new Expressions in Visual Arts". My talk focuses on four very interesting German visual artists: Heidrun Hegewald, Erika Stürmer-Alex, Cornelia Schleime and Angela Hampel.

Magyar nyelvű összefoglaló (for the Abstract in English, please scroll down)

A „Magyar Néphadsereg Munka Vörös Zászlórendjével Kitüntetett Központi Művészegyüttese” 1956. őszén monstre turnén vett részt a Kínai Népköztársaságban.  E tanulmány célja, hogy rekonstruálja a kommunikációs és reprezentációs logikákat, melyek mentén az Együttes szakmai vezetői elképzelték, színpadi formába öntötték és így „képviselték” a magyar kultúrát az általuk teljességgel ismeretlen kínai közönség előtt. Az elemzés alapjául az észak-kelet kínai Senjang városában, 1956. szeptember 21-n tartott premier programja, illetve egy sor ehhez kapcsolódó levéltári dokumentum szolgál.

A kínai turné – mind a megtett földrajzi távolság, mind az időtartam, mind pedig az előadók és a közönség közötti vélt „kulturális távolság” tekintetében példa nélküli volt az Együttes (akkor hét éves) történetében. A szakmai színvonallal kapcsolatos aggodalmakon túl az együttes művészeti vezetői markánsan a magyarországi paraszti kultúrába ágyazott, ezen belül magyar etno-nemzeti hangsúlyokat képviselő programot állítottak össze. Ehhez járult a sztálini esztétika burkolt, ám nyílvánvaló kritikája és mind a szovjet mozgalmi művészeti hagyomány, mind pedig az államszocialista „tömb” államai által terjesztett, „monolitikus-mozgalmi” műanyag teljes figyelmen kívül hagyása. Az Együttes ehelyett a közép-európai zene- és táncanyag javából -- különösen a tizenkilencedik századi nemzeti romantika csúcsművei közül – válogattak. Az együttes műveszi politikai állásfoglalását egyfajta, jól felismerhetően a paraszti kultúrára alapozó, ám  egyértelműen jövőorientált, progresszív, ebben az értelemben „demokratikus-szocialista”, „poszt-polgári” esztétikai kánon megteremtésére való törekvés hatotta át. Mindezt tetézte egyfajta, a szocialista politikai előadóművészet keretein belül újdonságnak számító, (ön)ironikus művészi formanyelv első megjelenése.
Az 1956-os kínai turnét az Együttes máig a legviharosabb sikerű külföldi alőadókörútjaként tartja számon. Az itt áttekintett empirikus anyagból ugyanakkor nem megállapítható, hogy a kínai közönség a fenti, bonyolult reprezentációs logikákból mit és hogyan érzékelt -- ez további vizsgálódás tárgyát képezi.

Abstract in English:

The “Performing Arts Ensemble of the Hungarian People’s Army, Laureate of the Red Banner Order of Labor” went on a tour in the People’s Republic of China in the Fall of 1956. In this study, I reconstruct the communicative-representational logics along with the Ensemble’s art directors imagined, staged and, hence, “represented” Hungarian culture before a completely unfamiliar Chinese audience. As empirical material, I focus on the program of the Ensemble’s premier in China, held in Shenyang on September 21, 1956, along with some additional archival materials.

The China tour was unprecedented for the then seven years old Ensemble, both in terms of the geographical distance covered, the duration and the presumed “cultural distance” between performers and audiences. Overcoming anxieties concerning professionalism, the Ensemble’s art directors put together a program that was deeply committed to a Magyar ethno-national reading of Hungarian peasant culture.  The program was an implicit, but unambiguous critique of Stalinist aesthetics. It ignored both politically overdetermined Soviet artistic traditions as well as the “monolithic-social-movement-style” art promoted by the other socialist states. Instead, the Ensemble drew upon the highlights of nineteenth-century romantic-nationalist performing arts repertoire. The artistic-political efforts made by the Ensemble aimed at creating a clearly recognizable, but unambiguously future-oriented, progressive, and in this latter sense also “democratic-socialist,” “post-bourgeois” aesthetic canon.  Added to this was the first appearance of a strikingly (self-)ironical form language within the ambit of socialist political performing arts.

The Ensemble considers the China tour of 1956 as its most successful trip abroad up till now. Yet, the materials examined in this paper do not quite permit us to determine what, if at all, the Chinese audiences perceived from all these complex logics of representation—that is a question for further research.

El Contact Improvisación (CI) es una danza basada en la exploración y la investigación sobre el movimiento, que toma como base puntos de contacto físico, al tiempo que propone una forma alternativa de entender la proximidad intercorporal, caracterizada por la inhibición de su componente sexualizado. El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir y comprender, en el marco de la práctica en las clases de CI, de qué modo es gestionado el problema del límite, emanado de la tensión que produce la combinación entre el contacto -muchas veces íntimo- de los cuerpos y la interpretación alternativa del mismo. Nos enfocaremos exclusivamente en la experiencia de mujeres, a partir de evidencia etnográfica producida en dos años de observación participante en clases de CI en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Mostraremos que la tensión en torno al problema del límite es regulada a partir de la incorporación de un discurso no estrictamente artístico -más propio del trabajo, los ámbitos ...

A friend is one who has the same enemies as you have' – these words of Abraham Lincoln can easily be applied to the position of Georgian Policy-makers of such post-soviet country as Georgia. Georgian policy-makers actively started to search for friends by creating the image of 'shared enemy', especially in 2009-2012. This shared enemy was the Soviet Union. States united in Soviet Union should have higher solidarity towards each other than the others. This became clearly seen during the August War 2008 when Georgian politicians underlined the influence of Soviet Union stating that opposing country could not overcome the memory of past glory. It is not the secret, that the policy-makers have big impact on society. Especially on the society which was traumatized by the war. For Georgian community political myths became the main source of belief. Policy-makers became the main storytellers. And society became the target audience. We can easily imagine the condition of society, which was in depression thanks to the war. Then, new tendency took the lead: policy-makers stared to tell the 'truth' which people wanted to hear. Deeds of heroes, Violence of enemies, Struggle for freedom – all those stories can be found in speeches made by Georgian politicians after the war of 2008. Our aim is to investigate those speeches and to see how the icons of 'heroes'/'enemies' were created.

L'écrit concerne les derniers parcours de recherche de mk, dirigée par Michele Di Stefano (Lion d'Argent pour l'innovation, Biennale de Danse de Venise, 2014), une des compagnies plus singulières de la scène performative européenne, réputée pour son fort lien avec les arts plastiques. Le travail de mk est une quête sur la négociation de l’identité, sur l’hybridation de la présence à travers une majeure ou mineure proximité parmi les corps en scène, dont des « intrus » représentant d’autres univers artistiques, et sociaux.
A travers une écriture chorégraphique qui utilise depuis le début la danse en toute sa puissance subversive, c’est le voyage - avec l’urgence d’un dépaysement qui apparemment ne semble plus possible de nos jours - le leitmotiv de toutes leurs œuvres.
