This book proposes, for the first time, an in-depth analysis of the Philosophie sociale, published in Paris in 1793 by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794). Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of "The Terror", on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology.

Taking these notions on board, in this essay we aim to in¬vestigate how family members, and young sons and daughters in particular, do family and actively take part in doing family through space and the body. By viewing family relations from a culturalist perspective (Reckwitz 2002) – namely as a set of rou¬tinized everyday bodily performances strongly related to cognitive activities, which are carried out by family members using every¬day objects and which take place both in the (real and virtual) domestic space – time and outside it – we aim to shed light on how these embodied family practices form, operate and change, from a spatial perspective. More precisely, we are interested in exploring how family boundaries change depending on the spatial proximity or distance among family members, configurations in which the (im)materiality of body and embodied family practic¬es are significant. Our aim is therefore to show the complexity and processuality of doing family, examining how young Italians respond to their parents’ gaze (Morgan 2011b), and interact with their ‘presence’; how sons and daughters negotiate both real and virtual domestic spaces with their parents; how embodied family practices are displayed and reproduced both at a distance and in proximity. In particular, we will explore domestic space-times – both real and virtual – as space-times where family life takes place and family relationships are negotiated and where the re¬lationality of family members’ bodies emerges and changes over time due to constantly shifting family boundaries.

The aim of this article is to analyse the influence of the theoretical-philosophical framework elaborated by the Milanese Enlightenment philosopher Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794), in the volume On Crimes and Punishments (1764), on the sociological thought of Moses Dobruska (1753-1794) and in particular his main work, the Philosophie sociale, published in 1793 in revolutionary Paris. Dobruska, a founding father of sociology forgotten for two centuries, inspired Henri de Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and later Auguste Comte (1798-1857). The article highlights both similarities and differences in the theoretical approaches and intentions between the two authors, delving into the themes of deviance, transgression of norms, sanctions as well as the ultimate goal of society, which Beccaria aspires to reform, and which Dobruska instead wants to revolutionise. The aim of Beccaria's philosophical essay is to rationalise the penal system in order to reduce unhappiness in the Duchy of Milan. Dobruska incorporates the reforms of the judicial system elaborated by Beccaria, albeit with some alterations. As a forerunner of sociological thinking, he is, however, more interested in investigating the inclinations of the deviant person and the structural processes that hinder deviance or those that support it. In preparation for a democratic society after the abolition of the Ancien Régime, Dobruska reflects on the social and cultural determinants of happiness.

Not all hope is equal. For the Christian religion, hope is a theological virtue, and refers to the expectation of future life, beyond death. With the transformation of European society in a secular sense and the rise of individualism between the 17th and 18th centuries, hope becomes a program of political and social transformation, aimed at this world. In my contribution I trace the emergence of the concept of hope in social thought and, then, in sociology. My analysis begins with the Philosophie sociale (Paris, 1793) by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794), a pioneering and largely overlooked text that founds a new vision of social science. After Dobruska, I then devote my attention to the great thinkers of the early nineteenth century, Henri de Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and Auguste Comte (1798-1857), and then I move on to the work of Émile Durkheim (1858-1917). It is a historical perspective that has been neglected until now, and that allows us to appreciate the construction of an idea of hope that frees itself from religious determinants and is oriented toward society and the individuals who live in it, and that anticipates the utopias and failures of the social ideologies of the 20th century.

After a brief outline of the biography of Moses Dobruska (1753-1794), this article wants to emphasize what most scholars, in particular Gershom Scholem, did not want to recognize about this Moravian Jew, coming from a sectarian Sabbatian environment, who later converted to Catholicism. He was not only a brilliant businessman, literate, a poet, and Freemason, but also a social philosopher, and, even more, a forgotten founding father of sociology. His work Philosophie sociale (Paris 1793) is a milestone in the development of a social discipline still in progress, which later took the name sociology. This study highlights the strong influence exerted by Dobruska on subsequent authors. In particular, it shows how Dobruska's concept of 'disorganization' (the breaking of a political, cultural and social order) had a strong influence on the thought of Henry Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and his pupil Auguste Comte (1798-1857).

From a historical and sociological perspective, based on the social theory of recognition of Axel Honneth, this article analyzes the life course of the Italian Jewish Holocaust survivor Liliana Segre, born in 1930 in Milan, and her struggle for social recognition after her liberation from the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Ravensbrück, Jugendlager and Malchow. The article will underline on one side, the "spiral of misrecognition" that Liliana Segre, as all Italian Jews, has been victim of after the approval of the Fascist racial laws of 1938 and the negative consequences for her identity, such as social shame, loss of self-confidence, self-respect and self-esteem. On the other side, the article focus on the "upward spiral of recognition", that Liliana Segre was able to realize after her return from the concentration camp. Through marriage, maternity, paid work in the labor market and civil engagement as Shoah witness, she was able to regain social self-esteem and dignity for herself and, for the Jewish people.

Interview with Karl-Siegbert Rehberg by Silvana Greco
Karl-Siegbert Rehberg was born in Aachen in 1943. He is one of most prolific and renowned sociologists in Germany, where he has been crucial in establishing the sociology of culture. During the Sixties, as he studied political science and sociology at the University of Aachen (Rheinisch-Westfälischen Hochschule Aachen, RWTH), he was also engaged in the German socialist party (SPD).
He was a pupil of Arnold Gehlen, under whose tutorship he wrote his PhD in Sociology in 1973, discussing the “Approaches to the perspectivistic sociology of institutions”. Rehberg started his academic career as an assistant researcher at the University of Aachen (RWTH) in 1973. After having been Visiting Professor at the Rijksuniversitteitte Leiden in Netherland and after having obtained his Habilitation as Privatdozent (qualified private lecturer), he became full professor at the TU Dresden in 1992. Since 2015 he is senior professor at the same university. During his long teaching career, he has lectured on different topics, from the sociology of social inequalities to the sociology of art. Rehberg continued to work for many decades on the concept of institution, which he had already analysed in his PhD Dissertation. His own theory on institutions is fully developed in his seminal work Symbolische Ordnungen. Beiträge zu einer soziologischen Theorie der Institutionen (2014).
After the death of Gehlen in 1976, he was entrusted with the task of editing the complete works of his former Doktorvater. Some of his essays on Gehlen’s thought have been translated into Italian as well. Rehberg’s work on the history of sociological thought focused also on other authors: on the founding fathers of sociology such as Marx, Weber, Simmel, Sombart and on the sociologists of 20th century, such as Elias, Scheler, Plessner, Freyer, Schelsky. He dedicated a book to Elias’s notion of civilizing process: Norbert Elias und die Menschenwissenschaften.
Having moved to Dresden a few years after the German reunification, Rehberg has extended his analysis to the social inequalities and to the class structure of the German society. He researched on visual art and on visual artists of East Germany as well. He published extensively in this field, e.g. the book Bilderstreit und Gesellschaftsumbruch.
In recent years, professor Rheberg made a qualitative research on the Dresden-based right-wing movement Pegida: PEGIDA - Rechtspopulismus zwischen Fremdenangst und »Wende«-Enttäuschung?: Analysen im Überblick´(2016, together with F. Kunz and T. Schlinzig).

This study is based on an interactionist perspective, which conceives the art world as a social system. According to this view, the art world involves an interconnected group of actors, who share common interests and are embedded in a network of social relations. The aim of the essay is to offer an overview of the activity of visual artists in the German Democratic Republic and to outline their cultural exchange with Italy. Since the 1950s this interchange between GDR and Italy was supported by several actors and institutions at various levels (micro, meso and macro).

Despite still widespread unemployment in Europe, there is a growing shortage of labour, due to the ageing of the population and discrimination against old people both in and out of employment. Following the long history of human rights legislation, such discrimination is now outlawed but many third-agers have become discouraged or do not know how to make their careers more secure. Vocational guidance, therefore, is needed in order to reintegrate them into the labour force and manage their careers effectively. 1 Sadly Dr Pamela Clayton passed away in the period between submitting this article and its publication. Her fellow authors wish to dedicate the article to her memory.

Henry Dunant, a young entrepreneur with high hopes and future founder of the Red Cross Movement, was fascinated by oriental cultures, especially North African ones. He had come to Italy in order to meet Napoleon III, in whose praise he had written a new book that he brought with him and intended to give to him. This volume of ours, the result of original archival research, aims to put places and people in front of the reader's eyes. What happened in Castiglione delle Stiviere before and after the battle of Solferino and San Martino? What was stirring in Dunant's soul? How looked the Palace that welcomed him, what other voices and what pains resounded around him? Preceded by an introduction by Silvana Greco and edited by Maria Simonetta Bondoni Pastorio and Giulio Busi, the book reconstructs the web of compassion and solidarity that vibrates in the letters and testimonies of other guests of Palazzo Pastorio in those tormented days. French officers, Italian soldiers, simple civilians - in the Pastorio residence, Dunant had around him a crowd of minor and major figures, united by suffering, by the proximity of death and by solidarity.

This is a book presentation of "The black Stone of Memory. Holocaust Remembrance Day, twenty years", published by Il Sole 24 Ore in January 2020, at the Memoriale della Shoah di Milano on January 14th 2020, 6:30 pm..
The book collects first twenty years a selection of articles, written by Giulio Busi, which appeared during these two decades on Domenicale del Sole 24 Ore. They are dedicated to the duty to remember, and the difficulty of transforming the awareness of persecution into a general, shared, living heritage.
In her contribution, Silvana Greco, sociologist of culture and of Judaism,
reconstructs Liliana Segre's story, an Italian Jewish Shoah survivor and today senator for life: from the margination, humiliation, despoliation of rights during the Italian fascism, and down to the slavery of the concentration camp - the spiral of mis-recognition - until the recognition and social integration into the Italian society after the II World War.
The volume is enriched by a selection of testimonies of the Jews, who survived the racial laws of 1938.

Esa Conference in Lisbon 2009 - Section RN11 - Section Sociology of Emotions
Abstract: Drawing on accounts from qualitative biographical in-depth narratives with 50 female and male adults (35-65 years old) working in small and bigger work organisations in Italy, this paper deals with adult friendship and the related emotions that arise from this particular social relation and interaction such as joy, happiness, sadness, anger, envy, between colleagues in the workplace, how they develop in time and what kind of gender differences can be underlined. Moreover, the paper examines how the emotionality of friendship in the workplace shape and affect the work experience and work attitude, the career opportunities and what kind of role they play during periods of work difficulties such as a job change (employment transitions) and a job loss, which often represent emotionally traumatic events. Although both men than women agree that friendship in the workplace has more difficulties to arise especially in a competitive work environment, once colleagues become friends the workplace becomes a place " to feel at home " , where in particular women express freely their emotions increasing their job satisfaction and social cohesion of the work team, therefore, improving the work attitude. Men underline that the comprehension of the rules and practices of the organisation through a colleague friend is a crucial element in a organisational life. In addition, friendship enhances collaboration, mitigates competition and supports in the long run their career. Said this, friendship can destabilize also the work relationship interfering with negative emotions such as anger, envy or jealousy or risking to transform it in a more intimate relationship. Both men than women emphasise the importance of an emotional support from " colleague friends " during employment transitions.
