Holocaust Shoah

As the number of Holocaust survivors declines, their live eyewitness testimony will be preserved and communicated via other media. This transformation prompts a key question. What value can personal testimony have when disembodied and presented in a medium more manipulable by the audience? The response addresses three types of mediated testimony: the first televised broadcast of a Holocaust survivor's story, on the 1953 U.S. television series This Is Your Life; archival video testimonies; and "unsettled testimony" consisting of less structured, first-person testimonies gathered by the author that reveal the challenges of discursive representation. Each type of testimony offers distinct advantages and limitations in reducing prejudice and fostering understanding.

הצורך לתעד ולספר את קורות השואה מצא לו אפיקים שונים, המהווים בסיס לחקר התקופה ולשימור זיכרונה. שני המאמרים שלהלן עוסקים בסוג ייחודי של כתיבת זיכרונות מתקופת השואה, שטרם נחקר. מדובר ברבנים (או למדנים) ניצולי שואה, אשר העלו את זיכרונותיהם והגותם על השואה לא כיצירה בפני עצמה, אלא כמבוא לספר קודש שכתבו (חידושי תורה, ספרי הלכה, דרוש, מחשבה ופרשנות). המבוא כתוב בזיקה אל הספר, אך גם עומד בפני עצמו.
המאמר סוקר גם את מסד הנתונים שהפיקה המכללה ירושלים העוסק במבואות כטקסטים לחקר השואה.

Although some scholarship has discussed the argumentative tactics of Holocaust deniers and how they persuade some audiences to reject seemingly obvious factual events, no research has addressed how Holocaust survivors themselves confront this direct challenge to their lived experience. Using videotaped oral testimonies in the Shoah Foundation Institute’s Visual History Archive (the world’s largest such collection), this study examines how survivors meet the challenge of Holocaust denial in Germany and in the United States.
Close analysis of the argumentative tactics embedded in survivor testimony reveals that survivors craft narratives with richer dimensions than acknowledged in the twisted historiography of Holocaust denial. Survivors attest not only to the facticity of external events but also to affective memory, chronicling how they process and adapt to trauma. This affective dimension of testimony suggests that survivors’ narratives employ more complex layers of argumentation than simply claiming correspondence to particular historical incidents. A chronology of all measures introduced by the National Socialist municipal administration and other perpetrator agencies against the Berlin Jews. The day by day chronicle, based on many hitherto unknown sources, provides the reader with a detailed and graphic picture of how the exclusion of the Jews from all spheres of public life unfolded over time and who was responsible for it. The introduction discusses the overlooked importance of local institutions for the radicalization of the persecution in the capital of the Third Reich, yet also touches upon the reactions and resistance of the Jews.

סיפורה של חסידות קרלין, אחת החסידויות הראשונות, הוא מן המרתקים בתולדות החסידות. חסידות זו שמה דגש על עבודת ה' ברגש ובגוף, על האמת, על הענווה ועל התנגדות ליומרנות אינטלקטואלית. היא הייתה הראשונה שהעמידה בראשה 'ינוקא', בן של צדיק בעודנו ילד, ואף חזרה על תקדים זה כעבור כמה דורות. היא עודדה עלייה לארץ ישראל שנים לפני הציונות ואף תמכה בהגירה ממזרח אירופה לאמריקה זמן רב לפני מלחמת העולם  שנייה, בניגוד לעמדתם של רוב רבני התקופה. משפחת אדמו"ריה כמעט שנכחדה בשואה, אך היא הצליחה להמשיך ולהתקיים ושרדה התפלגויות ומתחים. צאצאים של חסידי קרלין נטלו ונוטלים חלק פעיל בצדדים מגוונים של חיי  יישוב והמדינה, והיא עצמה, על ארבעת פלגיה, ממשיכה לקיים חיי דת תוססים בישראל ובעולם.
כספינה מיטלטלת: חסידות קרלין בין עליות למשברים הוא מחקר רחב יריעה ראשון על חסידות זו. אף שהאדמו"רים עומדים במרכז הדיון, הספר מאיר גם את דמויותיהן של הנפשות הפועלות מסביבם: נשותיהם, בני משפחתם,  פעילים והעסקנים. הספר משלב עיון מחקרי ותיאור סיפורי ומציג ניתוח מעמיק של אמונות וערכים לצד התנהגויות אנושיות, אישיות וחברתיות. עלילתה של חסידות קרלין ראשיתה במאה השמונה עשרה ואחריתה בימינו אלה, תחילת המאה העשרים ואחת.

A global ideological and political process to create a racist world ruled by the 'Aryan' race The Holocaust was the global, ideological, "systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder" 2 of millions of innocent civilians for racial, political, ideological and behavioral reasons, between 1933 and 1945, by Hitler's Nazi Germany and its collaborators, in the Nazi attempt to "reorganize humanity along racial lines," 3 and create a utopian racist and exclusive world dominated by the "Aryan" master race-a new world order. "Nazi-German racist ideology," Nazism, National Socialism, an exclusive, racist, fascist, and totalitarian ideology, "based on a racist vision of the world, was the main driving force" 4 5 behind the Holocaust. In 1945, "by war's end, {World War II} approximately six million Jews and millions of others {targeted for racial, ethnic, national, political, ideological and behavioral reasons: political and religious dissidents, members of the Clergy, Afro-Germans, Roma-Sinti/Gypsies, the physically and mentally challenged, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, some of the Slavic peoples-Poles, Russians, Soviet prisoners of war, Afro-American and Jewish prisoners of war and others} had perished in the Holocaust." 6 "More than one million of the victims were children." 7 Holocaust is a Greek word meaning "sacrifice by fire"-a sacrifice burnt entirely on the altar. This word was chosen because the bodies of the victims were consumed whole in crematoria and open fires.

La promulgation de la loi du 23 février 2005 « portant reconnaissance de la Nation et contribution nationale en faveur des Français rapatriés » donne lieu à un important débat public et à la diffusion d’une pétition d’historiens exigeant l’abrogation de toutes les lois dites mémorielles (loi de 2005 en cause, mais aussi loi Gayssot de 1990, loi reconnaissant le génocide arménien et loi Taubira de 2001). Cette pétition repose sur une dénonciation qui présuppose que lesdites lois, mises sur le même plan, auraient une fonction et un objet identiques. Or ce double présupposé est critiquable : d’une part, le fait d’appréhender ces textes comme ayant la même fonction, celle de sanctionner un comportement, est basé sur une confusion qu’il s’agit de clarifier ; d’autre part, considérer qu’ils ont le même objet, en l’occurrence l’établissement d’une vérité officielle par le Parlement ou les juges, relève d’un malentendu qu’il convient de dissiper s’agissant des lois de 1990 et de 2001. Ainsi le problème ne serait pas tant celui d’une inflation législative alarmante de lois scélérates, établissant une vérité d’Etat ; mais plutôt celui du sens, à peine caché, de l’adoption d’un texte tel que l’article 4 de la loi de 2005, qui impose une interprétation légitimement contestée par les historiens.

« Que serait un musée du trou de mémoire ? » se demandaient jadis Alain Gauthier et Henri-Pierre Jeudy . Cette question étrange est au cœur du pénultième roman de Claudio Magris, Non luogo a procedere. Dans l’excellente traduction de Jean et Marie-Noëlle Pastureau , le titre français, Classé sans suite, renvoie à l’abandon de toute poursuite judiciaire et annonce à quel point le lieu du musée, central dans ce livre, est lié à la question de l’amnésie collective : « Ce n’est pas contre l’oubli que je lutte, mais contre l’oubli de l’oubli, contre la coupable inconscience d’avoir voulu oublier » (CSS, 430). Comment un tel oubli au carré appelle, chez Magris, une vocation amnésiologique très différente du devoir ou du travail de mémoire souvent attribué aux œuvres d’art et à la littérature ? Dans une perspective sociocritique, cet article examine la richesse de cette mise en fiction d’un musée de l’oubli qui expose à la fois une histoire locale, celle de Trieste, et continentale, celle de la Mitteleuropa à l’heure des matins bruns.

The final chapter of Philology of the Flesh investigates the work of the German poet Paul Celan. A consideration of his "Meridian" speech is shown to rehearse most of the themes discussed to this point. This thematic overview is then interrogated and complicated by a reading of Celan's poem "Tenebrae." To conclude, the chapter examines Celan's provocative translations of Emily Dickinson.

Uit eigen stage-ervaringen en afgenomen enquêtes blijkt dat er vandaag bij middelbare scholieren een te eenzijdige beeldvorming bestaat omtrent de Holocaust. Leerlingen gaan veelal uit van tal van ongenuanceerde clichés, die onterecht door het collectieve geheugen worden bevestigd. Het meest bekende cliché betreft bijvoorbeeld "de Joden zijn het slachtoffer en de Duitsers zijn de daders van de Holocaust.' Vanuit deze problematiek kreeg ook onze onderzoeksvraag vorm: "In welke mate kan de beeldvorming van jongeren (16+) omtrent de Holocaust geneutraliseerd worden, zonder deze te ontkennen?" De leerkracht speelt een belangrijke rol binnen de beeldvorming bij jongeren. Het is de leerkracht die bronnen selecteert en kan bepalen welke interpretatie er wordt weergegeven. Uit leerkrachtenenquêtes blijkt echter dat het niet evident is om aan deze nuancerende en kritische attitude te werken binnen de geschiedenislessen. Leerlingen gaan er vaak vanuit dat de bronnen die ze te lezen krijgen waarheid zijn. Geschiedenis en verleden zijn voor leerlingen hetzelfde. (Wilschut, 2013) Het doel van het eindproduct is een attitudewijziging teweegbrengen. De moeilijkheid voor diegenen, die strijden tegen stereotypen is dat er vaak een grond van waarheid in het stereotype vervat zit. De bevestiging van deze waarheid door de media en door de samenleving zelf maakt van stereotyperende beeldvorming een moeilijk uit te roeien proces. Wel willen we aan de hand van dit onderzoek een eerste stap zetten. Pas als men genuanceerd naar het verleden kan kijken, kan men geschiedenis bestuderen en historische motieven begrijpen.

Der junge Wiener Ernst Papanek ist Vollblut-Sozialist, leidenschaftlicher Pädagoge und unerschütterlicher Optimist. Obwohl er nach dem Februaraufstand 1934 nur knapp ins Exil entkommt, ändert das nichts an seinem politischen und sozialen Engagement. Kurz vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges leitet er vier Kinderheime in Montmorency bei Paris für 283 jüdische Flüchtlingskinder aus Deutschland und Österreich. In wenigen Monaten gelingt es ihm, ein beeindruckendes pädagogisches System aufzubauen, das für seine Zeit geradezu revolutionär ist. Er kann die Kinder später in die USA holen und vor dem Holocaust bewahren. In New York verwendet Papanek dieselben pädagogischen Ansätze und leitet für zehn Jahre eine Schule für straffällige Jugendliche.

Bis heute können wir von seinen für die damalige Zeit revolutionären Methoden im Umgang mit unbegleiteten minderjährigen Flüchtlingen lernen.

An unfinished essay written in the wake of my course entitled "Writing In The Wake of Disaster" (Autumn Semester 2009). This is a theorization of the content and theme of the course, which demonstrated that undergraduate non-majors can handle Blanchot's most challenging texts. My students deserve credit for valuable contributions to the ideas herein.

This paper explores the influences of the German National Socialist Party’s (Nazi) ideologies on Christian renewal during the Nazi era and surveys negative aspects of such influences as well as the positive resistance against such ideologies. It offers lessons to be learned by Christians and some insights into how Christians should engage or not engage in political issues.
