« Que serait un musée du trou de mémoire ? » se demandaient jadis Alain Gauthier et Henri-Pierre Jeudy . Cette question étrange est au cœur du pénultième roman de Claudio Magris, Non luogo a procedere. Dans l’excellente traduction de Jean et Marie-Noëlle Pastureau , le titre français, Classé sans suite, renvoie à l’abandon de toute poursuite judiciaire et annonce à quel point le lieu du musée, central dans ce livre, est lié à la question de l’amnésie collective : « Ce n’est pas contre l’oubli que je lutte, mais contre l’oubli de l’oubli, contre la coupable inconscience d’avoir voulu oublier » (CSS, 430). Comment un tel oubli au carré appelle, chez Magris, une vocation amnésiologique très différente du devoir ou du travail de mémoire souvent attribué aux œuvres d’art et à la littérature ? Dans une perspective sociocritique, cet article examine la richesse de cette mise en fiction d’un musée de l’oubli qui expose à la fois une histoire locale, celle de Trieste, et continentale, celle de la Mitteleuropa à l’heure des matins bruns.

The essay presents several ideas regarding the management of the «Adriatic Question» in the period following World War II, focusing particular attention on the strategies of the political centre-left, of «Moroteism» and of «border Catholicism» aimed at getting beyond the legacy of the conflict and achieving a normalisation of Italo-Yugoslav relations after the return of Trieste to Italy in 1954. The analysis reconstructs the conciliatory path of two bordering states, formerly divided by a heated national, political and ideological rivalry. Drawing a parallel between the choices made centrally and those made locally, the work furthermore examines the connection between Aldo Moro’s Ostpolitik and the line taken by Trieste’s Christian Democrats, both of which aimed to put an end to controversy on the eastern front – the «Adriatic normalisation», following the «defence of Italianness» – in a situation characterised by a lowering of tensions between the blocks, by the reorganisation of international Communism and by the multilateralism of the Helsinki Conference. The aim of this paper is therefore to shed light upon how and with what consequences Moro’s «Peace in the Security» and Triestine Moroteism’s «bridge border» strategy – leading principle of the Giulian Christian Democrats throughout the Sixties and Seventies – established on the one hand a relationship of collaboration with Tito’s Yugoslavia (culminating in the Treaty of Osimo in 1975) and on the other designed a new political, economic and national function for the eccentric region of Venezia Giulia, whose sovereignty had been long contested and had been severely penalised in the wake of the second world war.

Jadransko naravoslovno društvo oziroma Società Adriatica di Scienze Naturali je od leta 1874 združevalo tr­žaške naravoslovce. Člani so pripravljali znanstvena in poljudnoznanstvena predavanja, se družili v lastnih či­talniških prostorih, prebirali naravoslovno čtivo z vsega sveta, urejali znanstveno revijo (Bollettino della Società Adriatica di Scienze Naturali in Trieste), organizirali strokovne ekskurzije v zanimive kraje itn. Oris društvenega delovanja, ki ga raziskovalci tržaške preteklosti do sedaj še niso vzeli pod drobnogled, je v pričujočem prispevku podkrepljen s posebnimi poudarki. Ti so namenjeni imperialni, evropski oziroma celo globalni vpetosti Jadranskega naravoslovnega društva, ki se je odražala v odličnosti tržaških naravoslovcev. V članku je pozornost namenjena tudi rabi jezikov in preverjanju morebitne korelacije jezikovnih izbir članov Jadranskega naravoslovnega društva s stop­ njevanjem naklonjenosti italijanskemu nacionalizmu v desetletjih pred začetkom prve svetovne vojne.

Der Beitrag fokussiert das Hotel Balkan (1902-1904) – im slowenischen Volksmund „Narodni dom“ („Nationale Heimstätte“) genanntes Gebäude – und seine städtebauliche Position. In der Zeit seiner Entstehung handelte es sich um das zentrale repräsentative Gebäude von Slowenen in Triest/Trieste/Trst. Die Stadt erfuhr nach der grande guerra eine sowohl politische als auch architektonische und städtebauliche Umwandlung von einer multiethnischen Stadt in den italienischen Grenzposten. Die Geschichte der Wahl des Baugrundes und der Errichtung des Narodni dom spiegelt den Prozess der Etablierung slowenischer Bevölkerung im bürgerlichen Milieu der kosmopolitischen habsburgischen Stadt wider. Die Brandstiftung und die sorgsam geplanten städtebaulichen Eingriffe, die nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg erfolgten, entzogen dem Bauwerk seine überragende Sichtbarkeit und zentrierten die Macht ausstrahlende Wirkung im neu erbauten Komplex Oberdan. Den neuen politischen Machthabern gelang es damit, den architektonischen Zeugen der slowenischen Präsenz in der Stadt zu tilgen und die slowenische Bevölkerung mundtot zu machen. Die anschließende Umnutzung des Gebäudes und Umgestaltung der ursprünglichen Piazza della Caserma veranschaulichen, wie man den Prozess der Modernisierung der Stadt nach 1918 in Dienste der italianità stellte.

La storia dei “Finanzieri di mare a Trieste” propone come punto di partenza
il porto cittadino, spaziando allo stesso tempo al Litorale Austriaco,
poi Venezia Giulia, e all’Istria, per riapprodare poi sulle rive della città. Il
volume, infatti, non si limita alla sola presenza italiana nel contesto storico
successivo al 1919, ma – e ciò avviene per la prima volta – opera un
collegamento tra due epoche. Da un lato si trovano i Finanzieri-marinai
della “Imperial Regia Guardia di Finanza” austro-ungarica, mentre
dall’altro lato le Fiamme Gialle di mare del Regno d’Italia: le stesse che
erediteranno dai colleghi austriaci, nel 1918-1919, un dispositivo navale
di tutto rispetto, grazie al quale fu possibile dar vita alla prima “Flottiglia
Costiera” della Guardia di Finanza. I Finanzieri di mare della “Trieste
Asburgica” furono i veri precursori di quell’innovazione tecnologica e
professionale che dal ’19 in poi caratterizzerà l’agire delle Fiamme Gialle
triestine. Furono proprio queste eredità che consentirono alla “Flottiglia”
di poter emergere certamente ad esempio più degno e concreto di come
fosse progredita, a partire dai primi anni ’20, la “Marineria di Finanza”
italiana, le cui origini risalgono al lontano 1816, ricorrendo quest’anno
il Bicentenario. Il volume prosegue con l’evoluzione del servizio navale
del Corpo in parallelo alla storia del Novecento triestino: gli eventi
della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il dramma dell’occupazione Jugoslava,
l’amministrazione Anglo-Americana e quella del Territorio Libero di
Trieste, il ritorno di Trieste all’Italia nel 1954, fino a giungere ai giorni
nostri. I 15 capitoli del volume sono arricchiti dalle “curiosità storiche”
che tratteggiano nel dettaglio alcuni episodi o personaggi che hanno
caratterizzato la storia dei finanzieri di mare di Trieste. Infine, il volume
è ampiamente corredato, sia per il periodo austriaco sia italiano, da una
cartografia storica, da immagini, documenti e articoli di giornale riguardanti
i mezzi navali, gli uomini di mare, le uniformi, i fatti “di mare”.

La Breccia di Slivia, affiorante circa 2 km a nord di Aurisina (Trieste), rappresenta la registrazione stratigrafica di un'importante fase tettonica verificatasi nell'area del Carso triestino durante il Campaniano superiore-Maastrichtiano. In tale periodo si è originata una depressione strutturale nei calcari di piattaforma di età santoniano-coniaciana, riempita da imponenti corpi di breccia derivati da smantellamenti e frane dei calcari incassanti. Questi depositi sono coevi alle facies schizoaline "liburniche" affioranti, con discreti spessori, nel Carso triestino meridionale e nel Carso goriziano settentrionale, mentre lungo la vicina fascia costiera il "Liburnico" è molto ridotto od assente e comunque generalmente limitato a termini basali del Paleocene. Infine, la depressione tettonica contenente la breccia è verosimilmente associata ad un significativo lineamento strutturale che sblocca e ripete la successione di piattaforma coniaciano-santoniana tra Slivia e S. Pelagio (a NE) ed Aurisina (a SW).

La caratteristica peculiare e costante di Arturo Rietti è la sua qualità di disegnatore accanito tanto che non vi è volto o figura che egli non abbia riprodotto. Questa frenesia, che si manifesta nella miriade di schizzi realizzati dall’artista e dei quali vi è ancora notevole testimonianza, è comune nella formazione di quei pittori che hanno dato vita alla cosiddetta civiltà del ritratto triestino, la cui piena consapevolezza e riconoscibilità si evidenzia a partire dai primi anni Ottanta dell’Ottocento, come si rileva nella Storia del Circolo di Trieste di Carlo Wostry. Gli artisti triestini compresero come, all’interno di una società mercantile che accresceva le sue ricchezze e che si stava imponendo in città, il ritratto fosse il genere pittorico che meglio rispondeva ad una concreta e remunerativa richiesta di mercato. Ciò che accomuna, pur nella loro eterogeneità, gli artisti giuliani è il loro percorso formativo che prevede, alle volte, la frequentazione dell'ambiente viennese ma, più sovente, quella dell’accademia di Monaco e delle sue esposizioni. Fra il 1880 e il 1900 l'Accademia di belle arti di Monaco accolse, oltre a Rietti nel 1884, Fittke nel 1893 e Parin nel 1894 , la gran parte dei più noti artisti conterranei: Giuseppe Barison, Umberto Veruda, Carlo Wostry, Isidoro Grünhut e quelli della generazione successiva: Bruno Croatto, Marcello Dudovich, Glauco Cambon, Argio Orell (ed ancora, nel 1910, Cesare Sofianopulo). Fu il berlinese Max Liebermann a divenire uno dei riferimenti fondamentali per il rinnovamento pittorico della pittura di area tedesca dalla fine secolo. Anche attraverso il suo testo più noto, Die Phantasie in der Malerei, possiamo comprendere quali fossero le problematiche formali rilevanti per i ritrattisti triestini nati nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento. Il cuore del testo di Liebermann propone una teoria secondo la quale, per trasporre efficacemente sulla tela la vera personalità dell’effigiato, non basta riprodurne le fattezze ma è necessario coglierne l’interiorità, al di là delle apparenze. Proprio per tale motivo il ritratto può consistere anche in pochi tratti, sufficienti però a carpire l’anima del soggetto. Per Liebermann quindi la capacità non sarebbe quella di riprodurre l’espressione individuale, così come riteneva Franz von Lembach, ma di porre in atto un’empatia ben più profonda con il personaggio e di trasporla sulla tela, superando la raffinatezza esecutiva dei pittori ottocenteschi che avevano in Wilhelm Leibl il loro più illustre rappresentante. Come scrisse Rietti nel 1918: «se il ritratto non rivela una verità segreta, profonda, dell’anima del soggetto, non è poesia».

Il 21 novembre 1839, nella sua campagna di via Romagna, il mecenate triestino Carlo Fontana realizzò il primo daguerrotipo. Da quel giorno più di duecento fotografi operarono in città: professionisti con i propri stabilimenti, fotografi itineranti, dilettanti, ma anche pittori e artisti.

In questo volume i fotografi di Trieste vengono censiti uno ad uno, fornendo così uno strumento utile per la ricerca storica o, più semplicemente, un mezzo per apprezzare le numerose testimonianze che questi artisti ci hanno lasciato.

Neobjavljen referat o Rebulovem romanu Zeleno izgnanstvo. Referat je bil predstavljen na maturi Državnega trgovskega tehničnega zavoda leta 1984.

10. maja 1448 prispe na Tržaško škof Enej Silvij Piccolomini. Tergeste ni bilo zadovoljno s tem imenovanjem, kajti že vrsto let si je lastilo pravico, da si samo voli mestnega škofa. Papež Nikolaj V. je to pravico preklical. Ko je tergestovski škof Niccolò Aldegardi umrl, je kapitelj dokazal, da si ne pusti te pravice kar tako odvzeti in je sam imenoval naslednika, domačina Anonia de Goppo. Toda papež je po nasvetu cesarja Friderika III. že določil novega škofa: politika in diplomata Eneja Silvija Piccolominija. S to odločitvijo je papež globoko ranil samozavest mesta. Ogorčeni mestni duhovniški zbor se je zbral, da bi razpravljal o zadevi, vendar mu ni ostalo drugega, kot da se pokori papeževi odločitvi.
Ko dospe novi škof na Kontovel, se tu seznani z vaškim plebanusom Tilnom. Tilen se škofa prav nič ne boji. Namesto da bi ga sprejel pod slavolokom, ki so ga pripravili meščani, ga sprejme v kleti ob kozarčku vina in mu odgovarja samozavestno in odločno. Tak značaj zelo preseneti Piccolominija. Tilen je namreč odločen tip, sovraži Turke, ljubi pristno domačo kapljico, je zelo razgledan in ljubitelj klasikov.
Nekja časa potem, ko se je Piccolomini že vselil v episkopiji, pošlje po Tilna. Tilen se nekaj dni kasneje zglasi v episkopiji, kjer se skoraj skrega z nekim Tržačanom. Ker je škofija velika, želi imeti nov škof vsaj dva vikarja. Prvi je natančen in širokosrčen Nemec Kajetan; drugi vikar pa postane Tilen.
Piccolominija vabijo patricijski krogi na večerjo. Tu se Tilen odkrito spre s pesnikom Aulenziem degli Aulenzi, ki je v ravnokar deklamirani pesmi hvalil tržaško slavno kamenje, ponosno na svoje civilne svoboščine; v resnici pa je bil sam Aulenzio degli Aulenzi prekupčevalec sužnjev. Tilen se je rodil v Liki, vendar je zaradi Turkov kmalu zgubil družino. Bil je ugrabljen, da bi bil prodan kot suženj, toda pobegnil je ter po raznih dogodivščinah prispel na Opčine, kjer ga je tamkajšnji plebanus Ozbald naučil latinščine. Kmalu nato pa ga je škof Aldergardi posvetil za duhovnika. Tilen se ne pokori nikomur in tako ravno pred pontifikalnim slavjem, ko se vsi mrzlično pripravljajo na slovesnost, odide Tilen na lov na tune. Barkovljan Lukež Grinjanec povabi Piccolominija na češnje na Pahorjevino. Lukež razodene škofu, da mu hočejo meščani po nepotrebnem razlastiti Pahorjevino.
Piccolomini se seznani tudi z dolgoletnim sporom med devinskim grofom in Tergestejem. Ko je leta 1370 v Ljubljani Tergeste sklepal mir z Benečani, je ta priznal devinskemu grofu pravico desetin, rent in najemnin. Poleg tega je lahko devinski grof sam postavljal na Kraško ozemlje duhovnike. Ker je bila vojna med Tergestejem in Benetkami, so Tergestovčani vse te pravice priznali, ko je minila nevarnost, so se nad devinskimi pravicami požvižgali. Devinski grof Rampert Walsee se je Piccolominija bal, ker je bil ta tudi cesarjev kancler, zato ga je skušal neke noči ugrabiti. Ugrabitelji so napadli škofa in spremstvo nekje pod Javorniki, na pol poti med Ljubljano in Trstom. Vendar je Tilen predčasno zavohal zasedo in tako rešil škofa in spremstvo. Tisto noč je škof preživel med slovenskimi polharji in se seznanil z njihovimi dogodivščinami.
Tilen se nekega dne sreča v Senožečah z Martinom Krpanom in z njim prijateljsko popije domačo kapljico. Medtem se škof mudi v Jurkloštru. Piccolomini odide na Dunaj na cesarjev dvor. Medtem se Tilen maščuje devinskemu grofu. Neko noč zapluje z ladjo v devinski pristan in nastavi na grajske kavlje, na katere ob semnjih privezujejo živino, stare cunje. Cunje nato zažge tako, da je ves grad pokonci. Walsee protestira pri oglejskem patriarhu in zahteva odstavitev škofa Piccolominija, toda zaman. Za škofom stojita sam papež Nicolaj V. in cesar Friderik III.
Tilen obišče svojega škofa na Dunaju. Tu si ogleda bolnišnico, v kateri pomaga tudi svetniški kancler Kajetan. Na Dunajski univerzi ima Piccolomini govor o humanizmu. Govoru prisostvujeta tudi celjska agenta, ki sta skušala podkupiti in pridobiti na svojo stran Tilna, vendar zaman. Kot sam škof, ostaja tudi Tilen velik celjski sovražnik. Agenta poskusita podkupiti drugega škofovega kanclerja, vendar tudi njega zaman. Svetniški Kajetan se zanima samo za umirajoče ljudi in želi Celjanom kot vsem ljudem samo dobro. Ko se Piccolomini vrne z Dunaja, ga v Tergesteju čakajo nekateri predstavniki patricijskih družin. Delgacija mu izrazi nezadovoljstvo nad dvema kanclerjema, ki s svojima čudnima jezikoma prinašata zmedo in ogorčenje v rimsko srce mesta. Vendar je Piccolomini nad vsem tem in diplomatsko odslovi delegacijo.
Škof ima seveda tudi določene dolžnosti v škofiji in tako posveti cerkev sv. Bartolomeja v Barkovljah, cerkev v Predjami, cerkev v Tomaju. V Predjami skuša eksorcirati nekega obsedenca, toda obsedenec ga napade s tem, da mu očita vse ljubezni, ki jih je škof imel kot laik, vsa ljubezenska pisma, ki jih je do bazelskega koncila napisal in tudi to, da je sodeloval pri izvolitvi protipapeža Feliksa. Škof je imel, ko je bil še laik dva nezakonska otroka: enega na Škotskem, drugega v Strasburgu.
Nekega večera ga obišče Elizabeta, mati drugega nezakonskega sina, ki ga je Piccolomini imel z njo v Strasburgu. Spominjata se prekrasnih dni, ki sta jih doživela v Porenju. Nezakonski sin mu je poslal pismo v verzih, nad katerim se Piccolomini prisrčno razveseli. Odkar je Piccolomini postal duhovnik, ga ne zanimajo več ženske, zanima ga samo še politika.
Tilen želi ustanoviti »Bratovščino veselih užigalcev«. Toda ta želja zbode »italijanske« meščanske zaprte kroge. Čeprav imajo ti cel kup bratovščin v vsaki župniji, ne morejo prenašati tega, da bi se ustanovila bratovščina, v kateri bi se družili Slovenci. Zato se na nekem sestanku Tilen odprto spre z njimi in jim očita ozkosrčnost in zakrknjenost.
Zopet se dvigne val protestov do škofa, ki pa se za take neumnosti sploh ne meni.
Ko potečejo štiri leta in osem mesecev, odkar je Piccolomini prišel v Trst, premesti papež Nikolaj V. Piccolominija v Sieno. Žal mu je, da ni prišel z njim tudi Tilen. Nekega dne ga Tilen obišče. Piccolomini upa, da bo Tilen ostal z njim v Sieni, vendar Tilen ima rad samo svojo domačo kontovelsko zemljo in se od nje ne more ločiti. Tako nekega dne pozdravi Piccolominija in se peš poda na pot domov, na kontovelski breg.

In 1884 Italo Svevo sent the renowned actress Eleonora Duse an Italian translation of Romeo and Juliet with the note, “Il sottoscritto si permette offrirLe pella rappresentazione questo suo dramma che scrisse proprio pensando a Lei. Non chiede altri diritti di autore che quelli che la legge in vigore quando visse gli concedeva. — G. Shakespeare.” Much has been made of Ettore Schmitz’s pen names and this signature is similarly significant: addressing Duse as Shakespeare reveals not only Svevo’s playfulness, but also his personal association with the Bard. Even Romeo and Juliet, which at first glance may seem to have little in common with Svevo’s forma mentis, was a work he treasured enough to share with the formidable actress. Although Svevo primarily mentions the tragedies, like Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, the magnitude of Shakespeare’s significance to Svevo and the humor of Svevo’s own plays suggest that Svevo’s relationship to Shakespeare’s comedies is also worth exploring. This essay investigates Svevo’s engagement with a comedy that has often been compared to Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. First, I consider the various cultural conduits through which Svevo would have received Shakespeare’s play to reveal the necessity of thinking about Svevo in the context of a broader European and even world literary culture. I then put Shakespeare’s play into conversation with Svevo’s La rigenerazione in order to explore Svevo’s rich representation of reality, of perception, and of performance itself.

L'articolo parte dal periodo asburgico ed offre un sguardo succinto ma utile a inquadrare un argomento complesso quanto vasto. L'avvicendarsi di sviluppi drammatici generatisi nel crepuscolo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale  che rimangono ancora oggi in primo piano grazie anche ai francobolli e corrispondenze dell'epoca che testimoniano un periodo alquanto travagliato e ancora gravido di possibili conflagrazioni. La situazione di Trieste nel primo dopoguerra, la divisione in due zone, A e B, e alla fine la partenza delle truppe alleate e l'arrivo dei bersaglieri  con grande tripudio generale sono ben documentati nei francobolli  emessi per il Territorio Libero di Trieste, libero per cosi' dire; preceduti da quelli sovrastampati dalle orde di Tito e poi ancora da quelli dell'Amministrazione Militare Alleata della Venezia Giulia.  Le illustrazioni sono utili perche' sono quelle riferentesi a  "testimoni oculari" - ovvero i francobolli e le corrispondenze di un decennio sofferto per i Triestini e per tutti gli italiani.

1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the
city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of
Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian
jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker
government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the
Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the
Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged. Although
historically Trieste did not have a tradition of migration, many chose to
emigrate during this period. Among those who left were former
employees of the Allied Military Government who were concerned for
their future, but there were also others with stable employment. Importantly, Triestine migration displays many atypical characteristics
when compared to Italian migration in general. Unlike many other
Italian migrants, most Triestines came to Australia as part of complete
nuclear family units, many were assisted passage migrants and a
significant number of these were in possession of trade qualifications on
their arrival. Importantly, furthermore, the Triestines are the only
immigrants of Italian origin to have mass migrated from an urban
environment. And, as this study highlights, this factor has impacted on
the migratory experiences and the identity and community making
process of this group.
The Triestines who immigrated to Australia during this period were
particularly aware of themselves as Triestines. Political and economic
forces had historically fostered the development of a Triestine identity
and during the post war period, when many of these immigrants had
experienced a sense of betrayal, the act of migration served to strengthen
a feeling of circumscribed Triestine identity once more. By narrating and analysing the immigrant experiences of this group, this
research reveals that this identity was also reinforced by the migration
experience and process as the urban mind-set of the Triestines initially
set them apart as 'strangers' within both the Anglo-Saxon reality and the
Italo-Australian one. By negotiating both similarities and difference in
the context of a shared immigrant experience, the Triestines were,
however, successfully able to become part of the Italo-Australian
community, but they continued to maintain a distinct sense of their own
identity as Triestines. What emerges from this study is that this enduring
sense of identity can be seen to be tied, not to essentialist notions of
identity, but to a continued and dynamic process of negotiation which
allowed the triestini to adopt various 'positionalities' which became part
of a dialectical process of identity construction.By examining the migrant experience of both first and subsequent
generations of Triestines in the Australian city of Melbourne in a
historical context, this study thus highlights the importance of both the
past and the present experience in the process of migrant settlement and
identity construction. The study is based on archival and field research,
including interviews with 75 informants. It holds in balance a story of
group formation (how the Triestines evolved as a group within
Melbourne) with an account of group identity (who they were as
Triestines).

Continuità is the key-word to consider the relevance and originality of the theoretical work of Ernesto Nathan Rogers, one of the most influencial figure within the Italian and International Modernist Culture between the late Thirties and the Sixties. The book consider this topic as key ideological term in the post-war discussion on the role of Modernity as well as biographical character of Rogers.
The research is the result of an original research on Rogers' personal archive and BBPR office archive.

archive research with oral testimonies of current inhabitants of Hrpelje-Kozina.

This article analyzes forms of political violence in the area of the former Austrian Littoral in the first years after the Great War. This period was characterized by extreme political instability, economic insecurity and violence. The question of how different societies managed to interact despite volatile and hostile political conditions is of enormous importance to the history of the region. Based on archival research the essay will investigate questions related to ruptures and continuity of violence before and after 1918, forms of military and paramilitary violence and the role of the new Italian authorities in the management of violence until the beginning of the Fascist regime.

This book tells the story of Miriam Frankel, née Grünglas, a Holocaust survivor born in Tyachiv (then Slovakia, now Ukraine) but raised from infancy till age thirteen in Trieste (Italy) where her parents ran a kosher guest-house. In the wake of Mussolini’s Racial Laws of 1938 Miriam and her family were deported from Italy back to Tyachiv. Here the family fell victim to the Nazis and was taken, with the town’s entire Jewish community, to Auschwitz. After surviving Auschwitz, the war, and a crippling physical ailment, Miriam, now an orphan, emigrated to Canada where she started life anew. Today Miriam is a beloved matriarch who devotes herself to her new family and to talking to school children and community groups about the Holocaust as she experienced it.

The book is based on a series of interviews with Miriam Frankel and other survivors of Nazi concentration camps, as well as on extensive research in Trieste in both the State Archive and the Jewish Archive. The result is a riveting story of survival enriched by the author’s own meditations, in conversation with the protagonist, on the violence wrought by intolerance and on the perils of that come from remaining silent.

While writing Miriam’s story, Rosanna Turcinovich Giuricin also writes her own story. In so doing, she accomplishes the arduous task of bringing together the stories of two populations that were swept away, like leaves in the wind, by the maelstrom of history that struck Europe in the twentieth century.

This precious contribution to our knowledge of the Italian Shoah has been filtered through three lenses: that of Miriam Frankel’s survivor testimony, of Rosanna Turcinovich Giuricin’s sensitive write up of her “conversation” with Miriam, and of Konrad Eisenbichler’s graceful translation of it.  Among the riches of this account is a glimpse of life in 1930s Trieste as experienced by a young Jewish woman on the eve of deportation.

Durante il ventennio le compagnie assicurative furono coinvolte al governo Mussolini  nelle politiche di risanamento dei centri storici. Tra i protagonisti di queste complesse e ambiziose operazioni vi è Marcello Piacentini che in diverse occasioni si trovò a operare per conto delle Assicurazioni generali di Trieste, dove in piazza della Borsa realizzò un intervento  (1935-1939) che diventò il modello di riferimento per gli altri edifici che sorsero accanto. La consultazione della documentazione d'archivio conservata presso le Assicurazioni Generali, il fondo Piacentini alla Biblioteca di architettura dell'Università di Firenze e le fonti documentarie nell'Archivio generale del Comune di Trieste, ha permesso di ricostruire una fase importante delle trasformazioni urbane facendo riemergere intrecci e relazioni che spaziano in tutto il territorio italiano.

Adriana Ferrarese del Bene, the soprano for whom Mozart wrote the role of Fiordiligi in "CosÍ fan tutte", started her career as a celebrated prima donna seria in London, Florence, Milan, Trieste and Piacenza (1784-1788) before being hired as prima buffa at the Imperial opera in Vienna. Her undisputed success in the serious genre was counterbalanced by mixed reactions towards her comic talent. Nevertheless, she was one of Italy's most renowned prime Donne, especially when performing two-tempo Rondòs. The present paper tells the story of her Italian career in Rondòs, revealing surprising facts about her early as well as late years: While her early career was restricted by the machinations of her unforgiving father-in-law Consul del Bene, her late years were overshadowed by the conflict between the Italian republicans and the pro-Austrian forces in northern Italy. She imported Mozart's "Come scoglio" to Venice and "Così fan tutte" to Trieste, she was the first prima donna to wear the Italian tricolore in Reggio in January 1797, but finished her career singing pro-Austrian propaganda pieces in Bologna.
