Venice

La ricerca propone un affondo nella storia, ben poco nota, della adolescenza e giovinezza del futuro duca di Modena Francesco III d'Este (1698-1780). La formazione del giovane principe, oltre alla fondamentale presenza di Ludovico Antonio Muratori, poté contare su una serie di viaggi nelle principali città italiane, da Venezia a Roma, durante i quali emerse un vivo interesse per le arti figurative, l'architettura e la musica.

Since XV century till the end of Venetian Republic Lombards were the ruler of building industry in Venice. Their <<botteghe>> produced pietra d'Istria capitals, architectural details but several of them were also original architects in touch with novelties from Florence, Urbino or Milan.

Ce voyage photographique s’appuie sur le livre Les Villes invisibles d’Italo Calvino : l’ouvrage de Sylvain Heraud s’articule en sept séries qui illustrent sept villes imaginées par l’écrivain italien. Les photographies présentent les caractéristiques des villes imaginaires choisies et invitent le lecteur à se les représenter. Ce recueil photographique se nomme donc Les Demeures invisibles, en parallèle au livre Les Villes invisibles.

Les photographies de ce livre ont été prises dans divers lieux construits et investis par l’Homme. Ce travail de six années a permis de couvrir différentes régions du monde et de ramener des clichés caractéristiques de l’architecture de ces sociétés et révélateurs d’une vie passée.

Рад представља попис свих спомена (памети) и успомена (васпоминанија) светаца и непокретних празника по реду црквене године од 1.септембра до 31. августа, који се налазе у календарима венецијанских издања Божидара Вуковића. У основи је постављен најпотпунији месецослов у Псалтиру са посљедованијем из 1520. године, упоређен са подацима из следећих издања: Служабник 1519, Молитвеник 1521. и готово исти с њим Молитвеник из 1536, Mинеј 1538. и Требник 1538-40. Називи и имена су нормализовани према Православном Светачнику Хризостома (Столића) и ковинскоме Месецослову Јерусалимскога типика у издању В. Савића. У првом делу наводимо спомене дан по дан, у другом делу дајемо азбучни именик светих и празника. Рад је замишљен као почетна база за реконструкцију српскословенског црквеног календара и репертоара календарских богослужбених текстова у штампаним књигама XVI столећа. Следећа етапа истраживања укључиће податке унутар текстова (служби, тропара, кондака, молитава) који су у тај списак ушли у незнатном броју, а осим тога и спомене светих ван непокретног календара.

The paper presents a list of immovable feasts and all memories of saints which were enumerated in the Božidar Vuković’s Venetian editions of calendars. Basically, the complete list with at least one saint for each day of the year we can find in Psaltir saposledovanjem i časlovcem (Psalter with horologion, 1520). In this paper, Psaltir is compared with the data from the following editions: Služabnik (Priest’s Service Book, 1519), Molitvenik (Prayer Book, 1521) and an almost identical to it Molitvenik (Prayer Book, 1536), as also with Minej praznični (Festal Menaion, 1538) and Trebnik (Book of Needs, 1538-40). All names and titles are normalized according to the Pravoslavni Svetačnik of Chrysostom (Stolić) and to the Mesecoslov Jerusalimskoga Tipika in the edition of V. Savić.
The paper consists of two parts: the first is a list of saints and holidays presented in the order of the church year (from September 1st to August 31st). In the second list, all names and holidays are in alphabetical order. This work is thought as a basis for the future reconstruction of the Serbian church calendar and the repertoire of calendar liturgical texts in printed books in XVI century. The next step of the research will include materials from the inside texts (services, troparia, kontakia, prayers) which mention other names of saints, when their memories don’t make part of the calendar rubrics.

The author analyzes the appearance and meaning of notion of honor in medieval sources on the case of the relationship between authorities and subjects in fourteenth century Zadar. The following problems are considered: the adjective honorabilis connected to the city officials, honor as the right and privilege (according to the Statute law of Zadar), the political meaning of honor (expressed in the relationships between Zadar and Venice and Zadar and Hungaro-Croatian king), and honor as a moral quality and human virtue (best expressed in the relationship between Zadar and the king in 1345/6).

John Ruskin's stay in Venice as reported in The stones of Venice emphasizes the different ways of doing things, the different ways of seeing things and the flight from acquired concepts. The objective of the tourist who goes to the region is to be able to escape the ready-made thoughts and to discover another world.

La ricerca della tesi parte dallo studio di casi europei nei quali gli usi informali sono stati valorizzati dalle amministrazioni o dai progettisti, e hanno generato importanti progetti di riqualificazione urbana di manufatti abbandonati.
Anche in Italia, seppur in maniera minore, vi sono gruppi, associazioni o singoli, che stanno cercando di aprire una strada legale per il recupero di manufatti dismessi attraverso gli usi informali. L’obiettivo di questa ricerca è la comprensione delle ragioni del successo di questi progetti, e la successiva elaborazione di una strategia per il recupero di una parte dell’ex Ospedale al Mare al Lido di Venezia. La città di Venezia non è immune al fenomeno dell’abbandono e l’isola del Lido è l’emblema di come tale fenomeno sia spesso legato a logiche speculative di gestione del patrimonio immobiliare dismesso. Tra le maglie di una città il cui patrimonio culturale è sempre più legato al turismo e al consumo, vi è una vivacità di attività, gruppi e persone che si spendono per creare e promuovere una cultura alternativa rivolta a chi Venezia la vive e la abita. Tra questi c’è l’Officina Marinoni, un gruppo che attraverso l’organizzazione di attività culturali e collettive si impegna affinchè il Padiglione Marinoni, un tempo ricreatorio del complesso dell’Ospedale al Mare, mantenga la sua vocazione culturale e rimanga ad uso pubblico.

Si propone una visione che si discosta da quelle finora proposte per l’Ospedale al Mare, che prevedevano l’inserimento di un’unica funzione (quella turistico-ricettiva) negli oltre 70.000m2 dell’area. Attraverso un progetto per fasi si misura la capacità del contesto esistente, nel quale insiste un uso informale, di confrontarsi con funzioni diverse, mantenendo fissi dei princìpi di base:

- l’accessibilità, ovvero la massima apertura dei percorsi e degli accessi che attraversano l’area da nord a sud e da est a ovest, per trasformare il complesso dell’ex Ospedale al Mare da un tassello mancante a parte integrante del tessuto urbano del Lido;

- la mixitè funzionale, ovvero la compresenza di funzioni differenti all’interno di spazi contermini che fanno parte di un unico complesso.  Le differenti attività si supportano e si completano l’una con l’altra, dando origine ad uno spazio unico nel panorama veneziano: un’officina culturale nella quale la cultura non si consuma ma si produce, un luogo d’incontro per i cittadini e una nuova attrazione per un tipo di turismo culturale consapevole;

- la coesistenza di edifici dai cicli di vita diversi, che permette al contesto di confrontarsi continuamente con i ritmi sempre più accelerati della società odierna e di saper rispondere maggiormente ai bisogni da essa sollevati.

The drawings and photographs preserved in the Seguso Vetri d'Arte archive at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice allow us to reconstruct the creative process that leads to the generation of glass objects and to analyse it in the light of the – physical and metaphorical – theme of reflection. Taking specifically into consideration the production of glass fish, we study, on the one hand, the techniques that have been adopted during the twentieth century to emphasize the three-dimensionality of the object, limiting its reflection and refraction; on the other hand, the features of living beings that are reflected in these creations at different levels. This analogy can be considered at a figurative level, but also at a deeper one, when a greater degree of abstraction is reached, dealing with the interaction of forces, which recalls some biological morphogenetic theories developed in the 1950s, highlighting the interdependence of form and matter.

What constituted art market power at the beginning of the nineteenth century?
The exploration of the international dealing activities of Giovanni Querci della Rovere, a hitherto elusive dealer in Old Master paintings in Venice during the Austrian occupation, provides interesting inputs to explore the advantages, as well the risks and the practical challenges of dealing “beyond borders” in the first decades of the nineteenth century.

In the paper are published three vernacular extracts from account books drawn up by Venetian merchants and bankers in the second half of the thirteenth century. The first two are contained in judgments rendered by the civil court of Petizion (established in 1244): therefore they are an early example of the probative value assigned to the account books in the commercial law of medieval Venice and they will occupy an important place in the Venetian dossier of the «Chartae Vulgares Antiquiores» research project. These extracts, which are among the oldest Venetian texts survived, are provided with a historical and linguistic commentary.

Tourism has always played an important role in Italy and, since the Grand Tour time, it has shaped its image. Yet the processes of post-modernization have deeply affected both tourism and the Italian main tourist destinations. Theming and culturalization of consumption, urban beautification processes and “new tourisms”, as well as a new approach to authenticity, related both to a post-modern tourist gaze and to new international tourism, are transforming Italian towns, their urban and tourist policies and their image. Yet, surprisingly, despite this deep cultural change, Italian towns seem to be resilient to the effects of globalization and to maintain their  “identity”. Actually, tourists and local communities contribute to create a new lively transnational urban culture. These cases are really ”good to think” the complex and dynamics relationships between tourism and heritage as well as between tourism and urban policies.

In the poster child of overtourism, social movements against tourism emerged as a reaction to vastly unsustainable tourist flows that have had a dramatic and transformational impact on the life of Venetians. While Venice's unique geographical position as a historic city, located on an island and surronded by a lagoon, adds to the complexity of how tourism flows are managed effectively, this work offers an approach to measurements are translated into stress indicators associated with characteristics of tourism unsustanability, with implications on the lives of local residents, and serve as a useful tool for understanding the underlying causes of anti-tourism and as warning signs in benchmarking overtourism in other destinations.

Les études concernant l'image de Venise dans la littérature européenne ne se comptent plus. Curieusement, la multiplication de ces essais ne s'est accompagnée d'aucun renouvellement du corpus : on continue d'invoquer le témoignage des mêmes auteurs, du XVIe au XXe siècle ; on questionne les mêmes textes. La recherche s'est trouvée tributaire de cette stagnation.
Tandis qu'on passait les récits de voyage au crible, on a ignoré les romans, les nouvelles, situés à Venise. Or, entre le dernier quart du XIXe siècle et l'entre-deux-guerres, on assiste à une spectaculaire floraison des récits évoquant cette ville où l'on voyage moins qu'on n'y séjourne, périodiquement, rituellement. Romans anglais, allemands, italiens mais surtout français. C'est d'un véritable établissement de la fiction qu'il s'agit, révélateur de l'engouement des écrivains pour une cité où le snobisme, essentiellement parisien, s'épanouit chaque automne suivant des itinéraires thématiques et géographiques bien particuliers. Dans cette perspective, les pages vénitiennes de Proust apparaissent comme la chevelure d'une comète largement inexplorée.
Aucun ouvrage sur Venise n'avait pris en compte les textes dont il est question dans cette étude. Tantôt illustres, les auteurs de ces fictions vénitiennes sont pour la plupart ignorés, oubliés, voire méprisés. Seul l'examen de leurs textes permet cependant de mesurer l'importance d'un phénomène capital pour l'appréhension littéraire d'une ville trop souvent réduite à un cortège de préjugés immuables : la « folie vénitienne », engouement dont l'apparente futilité masque mal l'angoisse d'un monde qui refuse de croire à sa fin.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, hundreds of Venetian women began musical training in childhood to become professional musicians, known as figlie di coro (daughters of the choir), in the four charitable Ospedali Maggiori. These women overcame childhood poverty and abandonment to awe prestigious guests with their skills and even become sought-after music teachers for daughters of noble families. Through the study of institutional records regarding the care of the wards, little-studied personal requests the female musicians wrote, and musical manuscripts containing both pedagogical materials and publicly performed works, this dissertation recounts the educations and careers of specific figlie di coro and responds to two main lines of inquiry: first, how Venice's institutional and gendered structures shaped the musical education and careers of women, and second, how the work of professionally trained female musicians contributed to and fit in the society around them. Ultimately, this in-depth study of archival documents about the figlie di coro challenges the centrality of male composers and their works in Venetian music history and reinforces the significance and contributions of female performers and educators.

This essay focuses on Henry James’s major phase masterpiece The Wings of the Dove (1902) and on Ivan Turgenev's third novel On the Eve (1860) - a favorite of James's - discussing the similar interplay between setting and characterization in the second half of both texts.

Depuis longtemps introuvables, les Esquisses vénitiennes font pendant à la Vie vénitienne, régulièrement réimprimée, du quotidien d'un Français à Venise au début du XX ème siècle. Petits tableau, tantôt réalistes, tantôt fantastiques, sans autre prétention que celle de suspendre des instants ou des circonstances privilégiés par la mémoire, tantôt réalistes, tantôt fantastiques, les esquisses de cet écrivain issu du Symbolisme forment un chapelet d'impressions variées, vives et mélancoliques, reflet d'une époque où les irisations ne jouaient pas dans une flaque d'essence mais sur les flacs d'un vase de Gallé.

Some documents from the Friuli area, dating back to 1336, attesting the use of firearms in Venzone and the preparation of black powder, were quickly forgotten immediately after their publication, not finding feedback, even today, even in local publications.
Their rediscovery and contextualization, considered also the recent discoveries on the subject occurred for the neighboring Veneto area, confirms their importance for the history of the hoplology offering a more secure and documented datum of the famous quotation referring to the year 1331 reported in the Chronicle of Cividale («ballistabant cum sclopo versus terram») whose oldest specimens, as known, do not go beyond the XV century.

Alcuni documenti di ambito friulano attestanti l’uso di armi da fuoco a Venzone e la preparazione della polvere nera risalenti al 1336, furono rapidamente dimenticati subito dopo la loro pubblicazione, non trovando, a tutt’oggi, riscontro neppure nelle pubblicazioni di argomento locale.
La loro riscoperta e contestualizzazione, alla luce anche dei risultati avuti dalle recenti indagini sull’argomento avvenute per la confinante area veneta, conferma la loro importanza per la storia dell’oplologia offrendo un dato più sicuro e documentato della famosa citazione riferita all’anno 1331 riportata nella Cronaca di Cividale («ballistabant cum sclopo versus terram») che, come noto da tempo, è giunta solamente in copie del secolo XV.
