Venice and the Veneto

Inserito nel numero speciale del Notiziario pubblicato dagli Amici dei Musei e dei Monumenti di Bassano del Grappa per celebrare il dono al locale Museo Civico di due frammenti inediti di Jacopo Bassano raffiguranti la "Vergine" e un "Pastore", l'intervento fa  il punto sugli studi e sul mercato delle opere dei Bassano negli ultimi dieci anni.

Due frammenti inediti di Jacopo Bassano, raffiguranti la "Vergine" e un "Pastore", sono apparsi nel 2019 sul mercato antiquario di Bassano del Grappa e sono stati esposti nel mese di dicembre per due giorni nella locale sede di Banca Mediolanum. Da quel momento ha avuto inizio una raccolta fondi per l'acquisto delle opere, in vista di una donazione al Museo Civico cittadino, che nella seconda metà del 2020 è stata presa in carico dagli Amici dei Musei e dei Monumenti di Bassano del Grappa e che si è conclusa nell'autunno 2021. Per celebrare il dono, gli Amici dei Musei hanno pubblicato un numero speciale del loro Notiziario dedicato ai due quadri e ad argomenti bassaneschi, nel quale si è riproposta anche la scheda realizzata in occasione dell'esposizione.

Originária do Vêneto, na Itália, a família Cescon vivenciou eventos cruciais do século XX: a participação italiana na Primeira Guerra Mundial; a ascensão de Mussolini e a ditadura fascista; o Império Colonial Italiano, sobretudo na Líbia; a eclosão da Segunda Guerra Mundial; a invasão da Itália pelos alemães em 1943-45; o horror dos bombardeios aéreos ingleses e americanos sobre as cidades locais... Traumatizada com esses eventos na Europa, a família Cescon imigrou para o Rio Grande do Sul, encontrando novas amizades e oportunidades no acolhedor município de Sarandi.
Narra-se uma história comunitária num ambiente de cidadania e respeito. Valoriza-se a fé católica, os princípios de gentileza, cordialidade e vizinhança, o orgulho de pertencer à etnia italiana, à cultura gaúcha e à cidade sarandiense... Acima de tudo, o amor pelos idosos, pois deles herdamos nossas tradições e costumes.

Il Veneto è un caso non comparabile con nessun’altra situazione: questa Regione ha subito, a partire dal dopoguerra ai giorni d’oggi, radicali cambiamenti socio-culturali che hanno avuto importanti conseguenze soprattutto sul paesaggio e sulla routine. Il “miracoloso” sviluppo economico che ha coinvolto il Nord-Est a partire dagli anni ‘60 del XX secolo, ha creato una società con un bisogno indotto di ricchezza e di beni materiali. Le principali conseguenze di ciò sono stati i fenomeni che hanno riguardato l’abbandono della ricerca e del bisogno di quei “beni immateriali” che, precedentemente al boom economico, erano gli elementi fondanti della società: la cura e l’attenzione all’ambiente, la tessitura di rapporti sociali, la vita vissuta secondo una routine, la fiducia reciproca - di cui parla anche la geografa politica italo-polacca Luiza Bialasiewicz delle «cosiddette "Casse Peote" che dovevano servire come "assicurazioni" per gli abitanti delle città - [...] che col passare del tempo diventarono un fulcro fondamentale nel capitale iniziale per nuove fabbriche. [...] Sono in molti modi simbolo delle reti di fiducia e cooperazione locali evidenziate dagli studiosi del modello veneto e sono marcatori dell'intrecciata interpenetrazione e della co-presenza della comunità locale e dell'industria» (cfr. Geographies of production and the contexts of politics: dis-location and new ecologies of fear in the Veneto città diffusa, Luiza Bialasiewicz, University of Durham, 2003) -, la bellezza del paesaggio e del patrimonio naturale e storico (Veneto Felice, Giovanni Comisso e N. Naldini, 1984).
La ricerca assidua della costruzione di un patrimonio materiale, minormente importante in precedenza, è diventato, invece, nel tempo e proporzionalmente alla crescita economica, il principale obiettivo da perseguire nella propria vita, dunque unico motivo di felicità e fonte di benessere della nuova società, la quale si è trasformata a seconda del nuovo contesto socio-culturale.
Esso è divenuto surrogato dei beni immateriali; questi, pian piano, sono andati scemando a causa dell’esasperata ricerca di ricchezza materiale che la nuova società si è concentrata a produrre, con il lavoro sfrenato e compulsivo, non importa che questo fosse illegale o, all’opposto, svolto in modo lecito grazie anche alla «DC locale che ha chiuso entrambi gli occhi; questo accordo tacito è stato “non chiedete, non guardiamo”» (Rumiz, 1997, pag. 38; Diamanti, 1996; Stella, 2000). Tutto ciò ha condizionato direttamente la vita delle persone e la sua qualità, di conseguenza come sono variati il paesaggio - e il rapporto che l’uomo intrattiene e costruisce con esso - e la routine come stile di vita.
Ciò ha indubbiamente condizionato e variato il concetto di felicità quale stato d’animo indotto dalla soddisfazione delle proprie ambizioni, aspirazioni, desideri. È evidente, quindi, che questo concetto abbia trovato nel tempo riscontro in fatti, prodotti e sentimenti di diversa origine e significato. Se, prima del suddetto boom, ci si considerava in una condizione di benessere nel momento in cui, soddisfatti i bisogni essenziali, si poteva apprezzare un paesaggio naturale e urbano gradevole, si aveva un lavoro stabile e una vita abitudinaria con degli obiettivi ben specifici, si poteva essere coinvolti in una comunità con una base fiduciaria sviluppata e con una diretta conseguenza di una conoscenza reciproca profonda, oltre che avere una vita sociale attiva; successivamente all’accrescimento economico, i beni necessari a tale stato d’animo, per un bisogno di riscatto - ricordiamo la miseria economica in cui molti vivevano nel Veneto - e invidia verso il vicino divenuto nuovo imprenditore, sono diventati meramente materiali: la villa iper blindata, attiguo ad essa il capannone – creatori poi della città diffusa -, l’auto e i vestiti di lusso da esibire la domenica a messa per testimoniare il proprio status.
Questa nuova risposta al modo di ottenere la felicità ha prodotto una notevole serie di conseguenze riguardanti gli aspetti sociali, economici e territoriali. Nel nostro lavoro analizzeremo come siano variate la routine e il paesaggio e di conseguenza la società del Nord-Est, nell’arco temporale che va dagli anni ’60 ai giorni nostri. L’intento è quello di voler evidenziare soprattutto le modifiche avvenute nel rapporto fra questi prima, durante e dopo l’avvenimento del boom economico.

Food systems are able, at the same time, to transform territories and to adapt to
them and to their urban configuration. Reading these interdependencies is crucial
in terms of space and ground occupation, especially in the light of food supply
chains global scale. Veneto region can be a paradigmatic case for other similar
European diffusely inhabited territories, where spaces of production, distribution
and consumption are in physical proximity amongst them.

Sorta forse prima del Mille in un’area adiacente il Canal Grande e ancora ricoperta di zone lacustri che saranno poi velocemente colmate seguendo la rapida espansione della città, la chiesa di San Giacomo dall’Orio ha mantenuto il proprio carattere antico, isolata rispetto agli edifici circostanti. La piccola facciata è tuttora orientata verso il canale mentre le absidi sono rivolte verso il campo che abbraccia l’edificio quasi su tutti i lati: una situazione, considerata la sua peculiare vitalità, inusuale nella fitta trama urbana di Venezia. Per secoli il quartiere, oscillante tra la periferia e il centro realtino, è stato abitato da operai e artigiani, in prevalenza impiegati nelle manifatture tessili e capaci di manifestare un’intensa attività devozionale; poche invece le famiglie patrizie. E come un vero e proprio palinsesto, la chiesa è stata sottoposta nei secoli a continui restauri e rifacimenti che, integratisi nel tempo gli uni negli altri, restituiscono oggi un complesso armonico, di una bellezza del tutto singolare e riconoscibile. Il volume illustra tutti questi aspetti attraverso nuove ricerche, intrecciando le committenze artistiche con l’ambiente sociale della parrocchia, la sua vita religiosa e il suo contesto urbano.

Some documents from the Friuli area, dating back to 1336, attesting the use of firearms in Venzone and the preparation of black powder, were quickly forgotten immediately after their publication, not finding feedback, even today, even in local publications.
Their rediscovery and contextualization, considered also the recent discoveries on the subject occurred for the neighboring Veneto area, confirms their importance for the history of the hoplology offering a more secure and documented datum of the famous quotation referring to the year 1331 reported in the Chronicle of Cividale («ballistabant cum sclopo versus terram») whose oldest specimens, as known, do not go beyond the XV century.

Alcuni documenti di ambito friulano attestanti l’uso di armi da fuoco a Venzone e la preparazione della polvere nera risalenti al 1336, furono rapidamente dimenticati subito dopo la loro pubblicazione, non trovando, a tutt’oggi, riscontro neppure nelle pubblicazioni di argomento locale.
La loro riscoperta e contestualizzazione, alla luce anche dei risultati avuti dalle recenti indagini sull’argomento avvenute per la confinante area veneta, conferma la loro importanza per la storia dell’oplologia offrendo un dato più sicuro e documentato della famosa citazione riferita all’anno 1331 riportata nella Cronaca di Cividale («ballistabant cum sclopo versus terram») che, come noto da tempo, è giunta solamente in copie del secolo XV.

Ricostruzione delle vicende costitutive della realizzazione nel medioevo della piazza San Marco di Venezia; restituzione delle caratteristiche formali degli edifici, inserimento nel quadro urbanistico della civitas Rivoalti tra XI e XIII secolo, con attenzione alle trasformazioni avvenute in età moderna.

A little-known series of three immense spalliere on the Abduction of Helen (Walters Art Museum) can now be identified as Venetian, ca. 1468 for the wedding of Caterina Corner with the King of Cyprus, by Dario di Giovanni (Vasari's Dario da Treviso), and the reflection of a performance of theatricals on the abduction of Helen that would have accompanied the wedding, possibly the earliest known representation from the history of Venetian  theater. The paper addresses the environment in Padua in the 1440s, and the school of Squarcione, where Dario and Mantegna were said to be rivals,  the adaptations of Roman sculpture to be seen there including the source for the  earliest classical nude Venus in Venetian art,  as well as the importance of the myth of Trojan ancestry for Venice and the significance of the marriage for the Corner and for Venice. Other essays in the volume reveal important factors of the series original appearance including the remarkable use here of Pressbrokat for a domestic commission.

This volume in the series Lives of the Artists collects the major writings about Titian (c. 1488-1576) by his contemporaries and near contemporaries. The centrepiece is the biography by Vasari and includes the marginal annotations to Vasari by Annibale Carracci, which had never before published in English. The volume also presents for the full English translation of a selection of letters and poems by Pietro Aretino; Carlo Priscianese's full account of a dinner party with Titian, and the contributions by Speroni Speroni and Ludovico Dolce, round out the picture of this hugely thoughtful, intellectual artist, whose paintings remain some of the most sensual and affecting in all of Western art.
Mostly unavailable in any form for many years, these writings have been newly edited for this edition, including the identification of works and people mentioned in each text.

[...] Difficile dire in che periodo cominciò a diffondersi l’uso di quello splendido strumento di costruzione del paesaggio veneto che è stato lo “stradon”, come da sempre lo chiamano i veneti. È opinione di chi scrive che sia praticamente coevo alla nascita e alla formazione del “sistema villa” inteso come complesso di edifici, fondi e sistemazioni paesaggistiche legate alla produzione agricola della proprietà veneziana in terraferma . Questo perché lo stradone aveva un’importanza fondamentale di collegamento tra il corpo padronale e le principali vie di comunicazione (strade pubbliche e canali) nonché di unione degli estesi fondi agricoli. Oltre ad avere questa veste funzionale, svolgeva anche un compito meramente scenografico: creava un cono di visuale unico sull’edificio principale, la “casa padronale”, che le faceva sempre da fondale, come una quinta teatrale. The subject-matter of the work is a seventeenth-century Italian sonata for a violin solo and continuo, its form and the technique. For the needs of the work, all known and preserved old prints and manuscripts with the Italian violin sonatas of the discussed period have been analysed (altogether there are 220 compositions of thirty composers’ authorship, see: Wykaz I [Index I] and Aneks A [Appendix A]). Classified as Italian were the works of the Italian composers writing in Italy and at the Italianised European courts. The time frame chosen begins in 1617 with the first in history edition of solo sonatas from Biagio Marini’s Affetti musicali, Op. 1, and ends with the manuscript collection of Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, which was dated to the January of 1701, though, finding its concordances in the copies of Colombi from before 1694.

This article presents a fragmentary and hitherto unpublished inscribed funerary stele, which was reused in Venice as an architectural spolium and has recently come to light. The text, written in Latin, is very likely to be the epitaph for a legionary, whose name is unknown since it occupied the part of the inscription that has not survived. Archaeological data and textual analysis suggest that the inscribed stone dates to the 1st - early 2nd centuries AD and probably came to Venice from the Eastern shores of the Adriatic. It also seems likely that the legionary mentioned in the fragmentary text was a native of Narbonese Gaul who died in Dalmatia or in Aquileia. The inscription can perhaps be associated with another funerary stele (CIL V 2162), which was reused in the base of the nearby San Vidal bell-tower.

In the second half of the 1740s, Almorò Barbaro commissioned for the palace at San Vidal in Venice at least three works from Giambattista Tiepolo and a large canvas from Giambattista Piazzetta. This article proposes to reconsider the iconography of these paintings based on the study of the public offices and family context of the Barbaro household.
The subject of Tiepolo’s oval canvas now in the National Gallery of Washington has long remained unidentified. The author suggests that the painting illustrates the tragic story of the Greek heroine Electra, which was well known at the time in Venice, thanks to the increasing theatrical interest.
By undertaking a detailed analysis of the documents relating to the offices held by Almorò Barbaro during his long political and administrative career, the author also reconsiders the iconography of the canvas now at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Traditionally interpreted as an allusion to the virtues of the family, in this context it can be more specifically intended as a celebration of the political and military achievements of his patron, prior to his appointment as Procurator of San Marco in 1750. In the final part of this article, the author analyzes the large canvas by Giambattista Piazzetta for the camaron, depicting the story of Gaius Mucius Scaevola with unusual iconographical details, which can be interpreted as a commemoration of Almoro’s favorite son Alvise Giuseppe, who died at a young age in 1747.

During the Renaissance, readers of accounts about the Far East faced the problem of assessing sources from a range of periods, often produced by writers who were not eyewitnesses. This article considers the responses of mapmakers and geographers to claims about the East by analyzing expressions of belief, surprise, doubt and incredulity onmaps and in geographical works. By considering examples from the late medieval period to the seventeenth century, it reveals important continuities to the ways in which the East, and Marco Polo, were perceived before and after sustained European contact with the Far East began. Particular attention is paid to Fra Mauro, maker of the most extensively annotated map before the age of oceanic travel to Asia; and to Giovanni Battista Ramusio, editor of the first multi-volume travel compendium.

The altarpiece of Saints Catherine of Siena and Thomas Aquinas, formerly placed above the first altar on the right in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, but destroyed by fire in 1867, is perhaps one of Giovanni Bellini’s most famous works – yet it is also one about which we possess the least material information. Through the analysis of primary sources and the surviving documentation this paper reconstructs the original material characteristics of the panel, including its technique and original size. The paper also discusses the restoration of the stone frame, still in situ and convincingly attributed to Pietro Lombardo and his workshop, and takes into account unpublished photographs of the 1994–1995 treatment supported by Save Venice. On the basis of this information a digital recreation of the original altarpiece is provided, and the opportunity is taken to correct the errors in the previous reconstructions published by Giles Robertson, Rona Goffen, and Denise Zaru.

In the course of 1580, Agostino Valier, a bishop of Verona, conducted an apostolic visitation to Istrian dioceses. The report on the visitation represents an historic source of great importance for the knowledge of late 16th century Istrian history. This paper brings to light information about Pula and its inhabitants  contained in the report on Bishop Valier’s visitation to the Pula Diocese. Descriptions include the very visit and other social, economic and religious circumstance in Pula of the period.

The paper presents and discusses the documentation for the monument built, in 1755, in the Parish Church of Motta di Livenza (Treviso), to preserve the remains of Cardinal Girolamo Aleandro, famous humanist of the sixteenth century, protagonist of papal policy, at the time of the first clash with Lutheran Reformation. The work replaces an urn of the XVIth Century and reveals the first fruits of the plasterer Francesco Re, before the work for San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice. In this paper is rebuilt for the first time the context of local scholars and bibliophiles responsible for the commission in a time of rediscovery of the figure of Cardinal Aleandro in the historical studies.
