Instigated by Chantal Akerman's admission in an interview with Nicole Brenez that she would ask her mother to repeat "Bonne nuit, Chantal," "Goodnight, Chantal," until she had found the right tone for it, "Goodnight, Chantal" investigates Akerman's use of the dislocation of voice as consolation. "The acousmatic [off-screen] voice is so powerful because it cannot be neutralised within the framework of the visible," writes philosopher Mladen Dolar, "and it makes the visible itself redoubled and enigmatic." Joining Dolar's voice-writing with Akerman's complex relationship to images is a look at her deep understanding of Chaplin as his own audience (Duras) and to the terms of night and day as unfixed environs for art-making and answerability.

When we—that is, Pavitra and Debashree—sat down to articulate our understanding of a decolonial and feminist media studies, we knew that we were entering a conversation that had long been underway. Anticolonial movements of the twentieth century ousted powerful and globe-spanning modern empires. Postcolonial and decolonial theories helped us understand the epistemic violence that made the material extraction of colonialism possible. They cautioned us that colonialism looked different in different parts of the world, used different weapons, and had different avatars in the present.
As many of the authors in this issue observe, the work of decolonization does not end at a definite historical milestone, and calls to decolonize become defanged when they are appropriated by the very institutions we seek to challenge. The struggle against the colonization of our minds and bodies and lands is ongoing. The task of the feminist media scholar, then, is to enter the struggle midstream and try to make sense of the different currents that make up the turbulence.

Kategoria widma Derridy posłużyła Marcowi przede wszystkim do rozważań nad charakterem współczesności i przeobrażeń, jakie dokonały się w obrębie myśli ponowoczesnej. Współczesna kultura, zdaniem Marca, stała się miejscem powstawania widm, nieustannie powracających z przeszłości. Uznając, że nie jesteśmy już w stanie tworzyć utopijnych wizji przyszłości, autor stara się zdać sprawę z widmowego charakteru współczesnej kultury, analizując m. in. strategie vintage, retro, nurt no future w kulturze lat 70. czy nurt fantastyki naukowej w literaturze.

The article examines three feature-length films produced in South Korea—director Hwang Dong-hyeok’s Silenced (2011), Song Il-gon’s Always (2011), and An Sang-hun’s Blind (2011)—that highlight a problem in contemporary disability rights cinema. While privileging individuals and groups that challenge normative understandings of character-based drama or documentary filmmaking, these motion pictures reflect an infantilizing tendency in popular culture more generally. The representations align with the standard medical approach to the topic, which sees disability as a sickness, a childlike helplessness (regardless of the person’s age) that results from an inability, a marked deficit in one’s physical or mental performance. However, it is argued that Silenced, a film that provoked legislative changes strengthening the protection of minors in South Korea, at least gestures toward the social model of disability.

Piensa, por ejemplo, en cuantas de nuestras grandes peliculas han partido de libros, obras de teatro e historias reales: El nacimiento de una nacidn, El mago de Oz, Lo que el viento se llevd, Casublancu, Raicesprofundas, Solo ante elpeligro y La ventana indiscreta, por citar solo algunas. Incluso el clasico Ciudadano Kane se baso en algunos aspectos de la verdadera historia de William Randolph Hearst'. La mayoria de las peliculas premiadas en certamenes y festi-vales de cine son adaptaciones. Considera, si no, la evidencia de estos datos: I William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) fue un conocido magnate de la prensa norteamericana y propulsor del periodismo amarillo, que llego a poseer un imperio con mas de 50 publicacjones. Hizo tambien incursiones en la politics, per0 tras su fracas0 en las elecciones a Gobernador del Estado, se retiro a1 palacio de San Simeon, donde vivio 10s ultimos aiios de decadencia rodeado de cuadros y esculturas. Su enorme paralelilsmo con el protagonista de Ciudadano Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) ha sido estudiado numerosas veces por 10s criticos de cine.

Il modo di guardare il mondo sembra segnato per Calvino da un orientamento archetipico derivato dalla prospettiva della visione della casa della sua infanzia, arroccata sulle colline liguri e protesa sul mare. Gli occhi che scrutano l'universo nelle sue pagine conservano tracce profonde di questa originaria esperienza visiva e sono rivolti secondo una direzione precisa, per cui lo spazio in ombra (l'opaco) si trova alle spalle e quello illuminato dal sole (l'aprico) di fronte. La linea che separa il regno dell'ombra da quello della luce non è però così netta e invalicabile e opaco ed aprico si confondono e capovolgono continuamente, intersecando in tal modo i confini fra io e mondo, interno ed esterno, dentro e fuori.

El  presente  análisis  muestra  la  riqueza  que  existe  en  esta  joven  rama  de  la  crítica  literaria en nuestro país. Por tal razón, este trabajo se apoya en la comparación narrativa del cuento de “Las babas del diablo” de Julio Cortázar y su adaptación cinematográfica Blow-up del    realizador    italiano    Michelangelo    Antonioni    para    ejemplificar    concretamente las virtudes de un análisis de esta naturaleza.
Ambos  textos  presentan  un  cierto  grado  de  complejidad  y  la  intención  es  ejemplificar  una  de  las  tantas  posibilidades  teóricas  que  puedan  responder  a  muchas  interrogantes que se han generado respecto a la validez de la obra de Antonioni respecto de  la  Cortázar,  ambas  grandes  exponentes  tanto  en  la  Historia  de  la  Literatura  Latinoamericana como del Cine Europeo contemporáneo.

Ilmestyskirja: Vietnamin sodan kulttuurihistoriaa -teos on monipuolinen, syväluotaava ja lähestymistavoiltaan virkistävän ennakkoluuloton sukellus ihmismieleen, sotaan ja sen pitkiin varjoihin. Se onnistuu yhdistämään tieteellisen ja populaarimman omakohtaisen kirjoittamisen tavoilla, jotka saavat lukijan väistämättä ajattelemaan Vietnamin sodasta paljon laajemmin kuin mihin varsinkin pahimmillaan huomattavan yksioikoiset populaarikulttuurin representaatiot yksistään tarjoaisivat edellytykset.

The unprecedented economic growth and immigration that Ireland experienced between 1995 and 2007 did not only challenge national but also ethnic, social, and gender identities. The contributions to this volume explore how films tackle these challenges and help to make sense of Ireland’s altered position in a globalised world. Among the films discussed are some of the most critically acclaimed Irish films of recent years, including Once (2006), Adam & Paul (2004), Garage (2007), and The Secret of Kells (2009), as well as the work of Oscar-winning director and writer Neil Jordan. The volume is completed by an extensive interview with award-winning director Lenny Abrahamson, and his collaborator, screenwriter and actor Mark O’Halloran.

Both literature and cinema tell stories. Nevertheless, stories are told differently on the page than on the screen. This article intends to explain and put into practice an approach to the comparative analysis of literary and cinematic narrative texts; such approach will focus on character and characterization. The category of character will serve as a guiding no- tion for the analysis through an exploration of the various ways in which one lm and three short stories shape their major characters. The lm is The Grey (2011), written and directed by John Carnahan, and the sto- ries are “In a Far Country,” “To Build a Fire,” and “The Law of Life,” all authored by Jack London and evoked by the lm. The intention here is not to establish or explain the extent to which the lm may or may not be considered an adaptation of London’s stories. La siguiente reflexión pretende hacer un breve análisis de la película “Blade Runner” (1982) de Ridley Scott, desde el uso de elementos teóricos de la comunicación y enfocándose principalmente en la mediación de Manuel Martín Serrano, para ello se parte de la disonancia que representa la invención de esclavos que se “humanizan” (innovación tecnológica) y la percepción y uso de los mismos en la sociedad que los cobija (cultura) en el momento en que un grupo de replicantes decide volver a la tierra.

Teniendo en cuenta sus metáforas y la dimensión intermedial de estas, el presente artículo se propone de examinar la modelización estética de la memoria y del recuerdo en Glosa. Mediante la fotografía y el cine como partes de la poética visual del escritor argentino, la novela recurre a metáforas visuales y de presentificación. A través de ellas se va negociando no solo la representación de la memoria, sino también la relación entre la literatura y el mundo extra-textual en cuyo centro se encuentra la imposibilidad de acceder a lo real, de determinarlo y de asirlo con palabras.

William Faulkner in the Media Ecology explores the Nobel Prize–winning author immersed in the new media of his time. Intersecting with twentieth-century technology such as photography, film, and sound recording, these twelve essays portray Faulkner not only as a writer looking back on the history of the U.S. South, but also as a screenwriter, aviator, and celebrity. This fresh, interdisciplinary approach to Faulkner presents an innovative way of reassessing a body of literary work that has engaged readers and critics for over sixty years. Essays by John T. Matthews, Catherine Gunther Kodat, Stefan Solomon, and Donald M. Kartiganer assess how Faulkner’s legacy has been shaped through media adaptation and public commemoration of his work. Jay Watson, Michael Zeitlin, Sarah Gleeson-White, Robert Jackson, and Sascha Morrell consider a range of media relevant to the creation of the writer’s stories and ways to recalibrate traditional thinking about his writing. Mark Steven, Peter Lurie, and Richard Godden examine how the vastly different mediations of both cinema and money influenced Faulkner’s work. Editors Julian Murphet and Stefan Solomon have brought together some of the most prominent voices in Faulkner studies, along with a number of emerging scholars, to construct a portrait of Faulkner as a thoroughly modern writer, as much attuned to the evolution of the contemporary world as he was to the past.

Resumo: Este artigo foca a longa relação de Fernando Namora com o cinema, procedendo a uma inventariação e estudo de nove projectos de cinema em que o escritor esteve directa-mente envolvido no papel de argumentista. Embora não tenham sido concretizados, devido a problemas financeiros, de censura e outros, estes projectos atestam a importância do cinema, e da linguagem cinematográfica, na obra de Namora, de que o guião para O Rio Triste (a anteceder o romance) é um importante exemplo. Além destes, Namora teve, em tempo de vida, seis longas-metragens adaptadas ao cinema ou televisão e foi alvo de cinco documentários.

Abstract: This article focuses on Fernando Namora´s long relationship with cinema, carrying out an inventory and study of nine film projects in which the writer was directly involved as screenwriter. Although they have not been produced, due to financial issues, censorship and other problems, these projects attest to the importance of cinema, and of film language, in Namora´s work, of which the script for O Rio Triste (preceding the novel) is a major example. In addition to these, Namora has had, during his lifetime, six feature films adapted to cinema or television, and he was the subject of five documentaries.

Ce texte vise à démontrer que les représentations de la ville dans le Décaméron de Boccace forment une constellation imaginaire de symboles, où le trajet créatif de l’auteur s’intègre aux attentes du milieu objectif dans lequel le créateur existe. En l’occurrence, l’écrivain et poète compose un réseau de villes possibles selon les croisements que chaque lecteur peut établir dans le libre parcours de lecture des nouvelles. Une deuxième partie de cette réflexion s’interroge sur la façon dont Pasolini interprète cette constellation dans son film et essaie de démontrer l’hypothèse d’un double travail de sa part : une incarnation corporelle de cette ville extérieure à l’artiste et le passage de ces corps et des ces visages dans une image mentale, à l’intérieur de l’image rêvée par le réalisateur dans une fresque à moitié vide.

На начальном этапе развития кинооператоры пытались снять М. Горького на плёнку только ради коммерческой выгоды. В 1920-е гг. целью хроникёров была фиксация исторических событий, на этих кадрах Горький выступал как свидетель эпохи. В начале 1930-х гг. образ Горького в кинохронике становится средством создания положительного образа верховной власти в СССР.

O objetivo deste artigo vem a analisar o significado da catábase de origem clássica no contexto do filme Batman Begins, dirigido por Cristopher Nolan em 2005; usando a personagem Bruce Wayne, o herói moderno como um exemplo da influência dos clássicos no cinema.

Una paradoja acecha a este libro. Una tensión entre lo individual y lo colectivo, entre lo trascendente y aquello más inmanente. Jonas Mekas ha sido, probablemente, quien mejor ha representado los logros del cine underground que se llevó a cabo en los Estados Unidos a partir de los años 50. Sin embargo, no se debería caer en personalismos pues el espíritu de entonces le excede. No aceptaremos las ataduras trata precisamente de lo que Mekas comparte con autores como Thoreau y Whitman, de una necesidad de librarse de yugos tremendamente pesados. Con todo, estas resistencias se dan en un territorio donde la mayoría de veces no se consigue dejar testimonio pero, a pesar de ello, este testimonio llega hasta hoy.

Prompted by thoughts and cues read in Stefano Cristante and Valentina Cremonesini's research La parte cattiva dell'Italia (2015) this paper aims to delve into the study of the media representation of specific Italian places through a comparative analysis of the national audiovisual imaginary. Given the deep connection between cinema and metropolitan scenarios (Abruzzese 2017; Brancato 2003), the setting is the key-concept to use in the selection of the movies and tv series with fictional narratives linked to the main metropolitan realities of our country: Milan, Rome, Naples and Palermo. Defining the setting in the iconic and hyperbolic terms of the suburbs, emerged in a first scan as having already been depicted as an element of growing importance in audiovisual Italian productions explicitly in relation with the territory, is the focus of this research. A definition required in order to compare different images of the Modern Cities (Benjamin 2007) of Italy and the possible stereotypes they could contain, with the objective to cross the dimension of landscapes at the borders of metropolitan areas with that of narrative genres. The distinction between drama and comedy of the sample of films and tv series set in the suburbs, produced and released in a time-frame that goes from the 1990s to nowadays, identifies a first level of breakdown of the elements contained in the audiovisual texts which, preluding to the necessity of a qualitative interrogation of them, mirrors the data of an increasing presence of the suburbs in the audiovisual imaginary of our country as much as the emergence of important quantitative and qualitative differences strictly correlated to the Italian place represented. More than the cinematographic and tv representation of Gomorrah the storytelling of the Roman suburbs is gaining in stature, seemingly committed to the restoration of its historical-cinematographical roots, in the face of a much more feeble and sporadic representation of the respective poles in Northern Italy and the insular reality of Sicily.

Pier Paolo Pasolini convirtió el hábitat del subproletariado romano de los años 50 y 60 en un argumento central de su obra. Su variada y amplia producción –no solo sus películas y guiones o sus novelas y poemas, sino también sus entrevistas y artículos– merece ser considerada parte de una historia de Roma interdisciplinar, abierta y articulada (como la propia dinámica pasoliniana). De acuerdo con ello, el presente trabajo aborda un análisis del Viaggio per Roma e dintorni (1958), un artículo que Pasolini escribió para la revista Vie Nuove, repetidamente relegado a segundo plano a pesar de ser uno de los escritos más claros y descriptivos del autor acerca de esa otra Roma marginal que conocía de primera mano. El trabajo concluye con una serie de composiciones cartográficas en las que texto, cine y forma urbana se imbrican para visualizar aquella ciudad “desconocida para el turista, ignorada por el biempensante, inexistente en los planos”.

Pier Paolo Pasolini turned the habitat of the Roman lumpenproletariat of the 50s and 60s into a central argument of his work. His varied and extensive production –not only his films and scripts, or his novels and poems, but also his interviews and articles– deserves to be considered part of an interdisciplinary, open, and articulated history of Rome (like the Pasolinian dynamics itself). Accordingly, this paper tackles an analysis of Viaggio per Roma e dintorni (1958), an article that Pasolini wrote for the magazine Vie Nuove, repeatedly overshadowed despite being one of the clearest and most descriptive writings of the author about the marginal Rome that he knew firsthand. This paper concludes with a series of cartographic compositions in which text, cinema, and urban form are intertwined to visualize that city “unknown to the tourist, ignored by the right-thinking, non-existent on maps”.

Esta reseña pretende establecer un diálogo entre dos filmes contemporáneos: The Shape of Water (Del Toro, 2017) y The Square (Östlund, 2017). Se trata de dos películas que, aparentemente, no tienen muchos elementos comunes y, sin embargo, sobreponiéndolas, se puede observar que ambas muestran, desde distintos puntos de vista, como rasgo endémico del mundo contemporáneo el afán por demarcar, acotar y domesticar. En la primera de ellas, se resalta la voluntad de contaminar las categorías puras; la segunda, en cambio, pretende evidenciar cómo la obsesión social por la demarcación y el acotamiento.
