Avant-Garde Cinema

Discussions of “silent cinema” have generally focused on films made during the silent era (1894–1929). Even after the spread of synchronized sound, however, several experimental filmmakers created films without soundtracks, purely visual experiences that challenged cinema’s status as a multisensory medium. This article gives close attention to Stan Brakhage’s 1959 film "Window Water Baby Moving" as a way of outlining
some of the effects of cinematic silence, such as aesthetic ambiguity and a heightened awareness of cinema’s visual rhythms.

Encompassing experimental film and video, essay film, gallery-based installation art, and digital art, Jihoon Kim establishes the concept of hybrid moving images as an array of impure images shaped by the encounters and negotiations between different media, while also using it to explore various theoretical issues, such as stillness and movement, indexicality, abstraction, materiality, afterlives of the celluloid cinema, archive, memory, apparatus, and the concept of medium as such.

Grounding its study in interdisciplinary framework of film studies, media studies, and contemporary art criticism, Between Film, Video, and the Digital offers a fresh insight on the post-media conditions of film and video under the pervasive influences of digital technologies, as well as on the crucial roles of media hybridity in the creative processes of giving birth to the emerging forms of the moving image. Esta investigación analiza el período compren-dido entre finales de los años 20 y principios de los 30 en la literatura de Francisco Ayala. La cuestión principal gira en torno a la deno-minación como vanguardista de los escritos del granadino, poniéndolos en relación con otras corrientes de vanguardia españolas y europeas del momento. Ayala fue un escritor fuertemente marcado por la vivencia del cine y de la metrópolis en un momento clave de la historia contemporánea europea, un autor pre-ocupado por el posicionamiento del artista en su contexto político y social.
Abstract: This research analyzes the period between the late 20's and early 30's in the literature of Francisco Ayala. The main issue is to solve the question about the denomination as vanguard of the writings of the Spanish writer, and after that, if possible, put them in relation to other avant-garde art currents, Spanish or European. Ayala was a writer strongly marked by the experience of cinema and the metropolis on a key moment in contemporary European history. An author concerned about the role of the artist in a particular political and social context.

Si se pretende matizar el aporte del arte de Buñuel al proyecto surrealista, es necesario investigar la maduración progresiva de su cine a la luz de la propuesta surrealista de la "liberación del deseo". Así, se intenta en este ensayo evaluar los sentidos en que el arte de Buñuel encauza en la sensibilidad surrealista, así como los caminos por los que esta sensibilidad evoluciona a lo largo de su carrera.

Le mythe de Salomé au cinéma : du noir et blanc de Charles Bryant (1923) au délire de couleurs de Carmelo Bene (1972) La richesse des réinterprétations du mythe de Salomé montre à quel point il s'agit d'un de ces mythes essentiels qui ne cessent de se réinventer. Dans les Evangiles, la figure de Salomé est mentionnée de manière brève et elliptique pour raconter la mort du prophète Jean-Baptiste et évoquer l'influence naissante du Christ. Cette ellipse première a été utilisée par les auteurs pour transformer la petite fille, d'abord marionnette du désir de sa mère, en figure de femme fatale et en sujet désirant. A l'origine de la fortune littéraire et artistique du mythe, il y a donc cette absence de précision, ce blanc dans le texte, qui est aussi un noyau de nuit du mythe, une obscurité originelle, dont le mystère interroge l'essence du désir, de la femme, de l'art. Ce mythe de la naissance de la femme déploie donc un vaste champ de réflexion, dans lequel se produisent des échanges et des renversements, à la fois esthétiques et idéologiques. Par-delà les enjeux fin de siècle que porte la figure baudelairienne de ce « Serpent qui danse », l'histoire du mythe de Salomé est celle de l'invention d'un personnage. Le christianisme invente l'incarnation, comme le montre Jean Clair en analysant l'histoire de la peinture [1] , et le mythe de Salomé se situe au passage d'un monde païen vers un monde chrétien. Dans ce passage, la figure de Salomé représente en quelque sorte l'envers de celle du Christ, le mythe propose l'histoire d'une incarnation par le mal, d'une invention de la femme, qui doit pour exister traverser les représentations que le désir masculin projette sur elle. Au fil des réécritures, le personnage, d'abord sous l'emprise de sa mère devient le miroir des projections du désir masculin puis s'affirme comme symbole de la puissance du désir féminin : Salomé ne naît pas femme, elle le devient. De l'embryon biblique au fleurissement art nouveau du mythe, jusqu'aux adaptations et aux chorégraphies les plus contemporaines, le mythe reflète l'évolution des images de la femme. Una paradoja acecha a este libro. Una tensión entre lo individual y lo colectivo, entre lo trascendente y aquello más inmanente. Jonas Mekas ha sido, probablemente, quien mejor ha representado los logros del cine underground que se llevó a cabo en los Estados Unidos a partir de los años 50. Sin embargo, no se debería caer en personalismos pues el espíritu de entonces le excede. No aceptaremos las ataduras trata precisamente de lo que Mekas comparte con autores como Thoreau y Whitman, de una necesidad de librarse de yugos tremendamente pesados. Con todo, estas resistencias se dan en un territorio donde la mayoría de veces no se consigue dejar testimonio pero, a pesar de ello, este testimonio llega hasta hoy.

Resumo

Este artigo propõe uma reflexão sobre A Dança dos Paroxismos (1929), de Jorge Brum do Canto (1910-1994), motivada por diversas pistas de interpretação lançadas nos intertítulos iniciais, designadamente a apresentação da obra como um “ensaio visual” e como um “filme português”, e a dedicatória ao cineasta Marcel L’Herbier. Perspetivando o filme em função de alguns pressupostos do cinema da Primeira Vanguarda Francesa, na qual se inscreve L’Herbier, identifica-se e caracteriza-se um programa estético que, no filme de Brum do Canto, se materializa numa questão que, sendo primariamente diegética, transporta também implicações teóricas determinantes: todo o filme corresponde à alucinação de um moribundo. Através de uma análise aproximada de A Dança dos Paroxismos, investiga-se, por fim, de que modo este filme — um dos primeiros casos de “cinema onírico” — pode constituir um complexo “ensaio visual” sobre o cinema da Primeira Vanguarda Francesa.

This essay analyzes Zorns Lemma (1962–1970), a film made by American artist Hollis Frampton (1936–1984). Noting Frampton’s use of Robert Grosseteste’s thirteenth-century treatise De luce [‘On Light’] as a key aspect of the film’s soundtrack, the essay argues that Grosseteste’s investigations of light as a medium played a key role in Frampton’s theorization of cinema. As such, his interest in medieval light theories spurred him to develop a powerful, idiosyncratic response to prevailing discourses of media and medium specificity during the 1960s. When examined in light of contemporaneous projects by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922–1975) and Roland Barthes (1915–1980), Zorns Lemma points up the significance of medieval thought in the period’s conceptions of art and time.

Em geral, as teorias da religião colocam em relevo o aspecto de fundamentação e construção de sentido que o discurso religioso estabelece. Assim, a religião é tida como fixação de uma ordem frente ao caos, de um sentido frente ao vazio, de um abrigo frente ao desamparo... enfim, religião tem a ver com construção de mundo. Na contramão dessa percepção, um traço comum dos filmes aqui analisados é apontar para o aspecto de abismo que constitui a religião. Ela não somente desempenha esse papel de fundamentação, mas também pode ser aquilo que desestabiliza, por meio do qual o caos emerge, sendo crítica de si mesma e a desconstrução do mundo constituído. Isto é, a religião pode ser também subversão de mundo.

« Que le cinéma aille à sa perte, c’est le seul cinéma. Que le monde aille à sa perte, qu’il aille à sa perte, c’est la seule politique. » (Le Camion, premier projet). Si l’on a beaucoup glosé sur la vocation politique de cette double déclaration, autant peut-être que sur le projet cinématographique d’ensemble qu’elle semble supposer, d’aucuns parlant de cinéma impossible ou de mort du cinéma (Madeleine Borgomano, Sarah Gaspari), l’on n’a jamais vraiment comparé la structure des deux propositions : elles apparaissent rigoureusement parallèles, mais elles ne le sont pas. Aux yeux de Duras, le cheminement vers la perte est une politique par rapport au monde, mais le cinéma est déjà en soi un cheminement vers la perte, intrinsèquement, essentiellement.
En ce sens, il faut interroger à nouveaux frais l’aspect apocalyptique du cinéma de Duras, non plus au départ de sa réflexion politique littéraire (Détruire, dit-elle, Abahn, Sabana, David) mais bien plutôt à l’aune d’un pouvoir qu’elle accorde singulièrement à l’image et non au texte. Si elle réécrivait la plupart de ses textes, parfois de manière obsessionnelle, Duras n’a jamais déclaré un livre raté (tout au plus L’homme menti et Theodora Katz n’ont-ils jamais été achevés, mais ils n’ont pas été publiés non plus). Par contre, selon son propre et fier aveu, son cinéma est un ensemble de films ratés ou d’échecs, ce qui n’empêche pas l’écrivain de les donner à voir. L’apocalypse du cinéma durassien est thématique (tous les spécialistes l’ont constaté), mais elle est également structurelle, elle est conditionnée par le matériau : l’image est apocalyptique. L’image est un révélateur (au double sens photographique et apocalyptique), mais la révélation n’annonce que la perte et la destruction par l’opération même de la monstration. Ce qui est montré est toujours déjà irrémédiablement perdu et détruit.
Cette réflexion globale se décline selon deux axes qui sont autant de questions : d’une part, quelle est cette essence singulière que Duras attache à l’image ?, et d’autre part, pourquoi Duras ne considère-t-elle pas le texte sur le même plan que l’image ? Le premier axe permet ainsi de reparcourir l’ensemble de la production cinématographique durassienne : les délabrements du décor et la disparition des personnages de Son nom de Venise dans Calcutta désert, le ratage sur lequel reposent Le Camion et Le Navire Night, le reniement de Baxter, Véra Baxter, le noir abyssal de L’homme atlantique, mais aussi la perspective de la perte qui s’insinue dès les propositions de traitement de l’image dans le scénario de Hiroshima mon amour.

Début des années cinquante, à Paris, le strip-tease s'acclimate comme le stade le plus aboutit de ce qui est autorisé à la scène en termes d'érotisme. Le succès rencontré par cet art du spectacle vivant est tel qu'à partir des années soixante d'autres arts se définissent par rapport à lui, le cinéma, par exemple, avec Agnès Laurent dans Mademoiselle Strip-tease (P. Foucaud, 1957), Nadia Gray dans La dolce vita (F. Fellini, 1960), Nico dans Strip-tease (J. Poitrenaud, 1963), Jane Birkin dans Comment réussir quand on est con et pleurnichard (M. Audiard, 1974), Romy Schneider dans L'important c'est d'aimer (1975), etc. À partir de documents d'archives privées (photographies de presse, revues anciennes, etc.), nous nous intéresserons à l'arsenal élaboré de situations, de postures, de mouvements et de gestes par les étoiles du strip-tease des années soixante, notamment Dodo d'Hambourg, Lili Niagara et Rita Renoir, dont s'inspire la femme fatale. Nous mettrons spécialement en évidence comment Rita Renoir incarnait une représentation subversive de la femme fatale, depuis ses noirs cérémonials du Crazy Horse, à ses scènes porno-satanistes du théâtre expérimental.

L’évolution de la littérature et des arts est communément envisagée comme une succession de ruptures, dont chacune définit une école ou un mouvement dit d’avant-garde. Mais il serait temps de s’interroger sur la face cachée de ce récit : celle des continuités et des retours, de la tradition et des arrière-gardes qui s’inscrivent dans les marges ou même à contre-courant de la dynamique générale.
Il s’agit de transformer en profondeur notre perception de l’évolution littéraire et artistique et d’inventer une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire. Cet ouvrage montre l’intérêt d’une diversité des approches pour étudier un objet aussi ambigu. Face cachée de la modernité, l’arrière-garde pourrait bien aussi en être la clé, apte à ouvrir des perspectives nouvelles et faire surgir des aspects inattendus. S’il faut penser les arrière-gardes, c’est pour pouvoir penser tout le reste.

This essay shows Mexican independent cinema’s innovative approach towards the representation of children’s universe in the 1960s. The films En el balcón vacío, En el parque hondo and Tarde de agosto explore the child protagonists’ perspective on violence and exile, that contrast stereotypical and hegemonic representations of childhood constructed by the Mexican film industry in previous decades.

These Pixelscapes were found within a photograph of Kazimir Malevich (Ukranian-born artist, 1878-1935) via magnification, filter treatment (halftone) and isolation of the pixel(s) in Photoshop. Malevich founded the art movement, Suprematism in Moscow, 1913 as a parallel to Constructivism. Suprematism ("supremacy of forms") is a study in abstraction conceived in itself ... non-objective and not related to anything except geometric shapes and colors ... and a precursor to Minimalism.

La décennie 1960 est une période d’intenses bouleversements dans l’histoire du cinéma japonais. L’heure est à la libération sexuelle, à la contestation politique, aux mouvements citoyens contre la pollution industrielle : climat libertaire propice aux irrévérences, dont le monde cinématographique se fait comptable à travers une série de scandales. Mais l’accès du pays à la prospérité au tournant des années 1960, célébrée en grande pompe par les Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo de 1964, semble dissiper cette angoisse, entraînant les cinéastes de la nouvelle génération vers d’autres modèles théoriques et esthétiques, aptes à rendre compte de la nouvelle société de consommation et de communication de masse. C’est cette grande mutation qu’Évasion du Japon propose d’explorer.

At their most basic, the cinematic imaginary and the photographic fact help explain how specific techniques or even individual artworks could be viewed as quintessentially cinematic in the interwar period and archetypally photographic after the War.
The interwar and post-WWII avant- gardes were possessed by media whose direct products were virtually absent. In the 1920s, avant-garde films were rarities even as the avant-garde cinematic imaginary reigned supreme. The 1960s and ’70s avant-gardes marshaled photography everywhere and produced photographs (as such) nowhere.

Digitally composed from stereo photographs over a century old, Ken Jacobs' 2006 "Capitalism" films unsettle spatiotemporal relationships that structure not only photographic and cinematic representation but also dimensions of perception and history. They explore depth as an aesthetic and conceptual paradox that has driven Jacobs' career-long experiments in "paracinema."

Maria Tatar states that the fairy-tale Beauty and the Beast depicts, “The transformative power of empathy, that encodes messages about […] romance, marriage, and ‘The Other’” (9). Because of these coded messages, the story and its many retellings have provided fertile ground for discussions on empathy and gender. The tale, from its very inception, has managed to resonate with how different eras view empathy and its interactions with gender relations, which can be seen through the multiple adaptations and variations of the tale. Through four chapters, my dissertation explores four iterations of Beauty and the Beast, along with other culturally mainstream “beastly” media, through the lens of gender and empathy. The first chapter explores Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s 1756 fairy-tale, and how it reflects conflicting ideas of sympathy and arranged marriage. The second chapter discusses how Jean Cocteau’s 1946 avant-garde film subverts the 1940s culture of gender conformism along with its forcing of female domesticity, and does so by reflecting Simone de Beauvoir’s ideas of gendered reciprocity. The third chapter considers the manifestation of the New Sincerity in Disney’s 1991 animated film, and how it prioritises male transformation over female self-definition. The fourth chapter, which covers the Disney 2017 remake, looks at how feminist critique targets the fairy-tale, and how it is counteracted by the trend of nostalgia within media. I conclude that the multiple iterations of Beauty and the Beast show that despite being a “Tale as old as time,” the story is still being told in accordance with western society’s view of gender relations and empathy, and it is very likely that the tale will continue to be told.

The first institutional history of European avant-garde cinema in the 1920s. Through the lens of the Stuttgart "Film and Foto" exhibition, the film portion curated by Hans Richter, this essay intertwines the history of European avant-cinema, both as a mode of production and exhibition practice, with contemporary film theory. The result are the beginnings of film culture in Europe before 1930.

This article deals with the fundamental question of movement in the work of Marcel Duchamp. It attempts to show that far from being a passing phase, it was present throughout his career, adopting different perspectives and explanations. Taking into account the actual words, notes and comments of the artist, it sets to establish a continuum, a link from one work to another. This helps to affirm that however revolutionary Duchamp might have been, his research about movement, optics and cinema lies solidly on painting.

Este artículo aborda el tema del movi¬miento, crucial en la obra de Marcel Duchamp. Inten¬ta mostrar que lejos de ser una fase temporal, estuvo presente a lo largo de su carrera, ya que empleó dife¬rentes perspectivas y explicaciones para investigarlo. Tomando en cuenta las declaraciones, notas, apun¬tes y comentarios propios del artista, se busca en este texto establecer un hilo conductor, una suerte de enlace entre una obra y otra, lo cual ayuda a afir¬mar que por muy revolucionario que Duchamp haya sido, su investigación sobre el movimiento, la óptica y el cine se asienta de manera sólida en la pintura.

In the late 1970s, Pierre Bourdieu argued that the field of cultural production was distinguished along class lines by three different modes of cultural habitus: bourgeois disinterestness, petty-bourgeois allodoxia and working-class necessity. Since that era, the petty-bourgeois habitus has become the dominant predisposition. Adding Bour-dieu's sociology of culture to Peter Bürger's historicized theory of the emergence of the avant garde as a critique of the "institution art," a new "avant garde hypothesis" becomes possible for today's age of post-Fordist biocapitalism. Based on Jacques Lacan's Four Discourses, the contemporary situation is shown to privilege specific forms of cultural production, in particular an activist Discourse of the Hysteric and a technocratic Discourse of the University. Psychoanalysis reveals the limits of these tendencies while also underscoring the archaic aspects of an aestheticist Discourse of the Master and the transferential logics of Analyst avant gardes.

The underground magazines of the seventies were innovative, provocative and often made with limited resources. In the second half of the 20th century, they represented a fertile laboratory for experimenting. They came about in the wake of the 1968 protests, fostered by the common drive for a sort of revolt, and seemed to anticipate some of the trends that would fully develop with the advent of the digital era: from an innovative definition of the boundaries of the public sphere to a more original structure of hierarchies between producers and consumers.
A rich and multifaceted array of experiences paying particular attention to the renovation called for by a number of social stakeholders – from the fierce, second-generation feminism to the most extreme fringes of extra-parliamentary political action – is here explored by scholars from different fields of study through the analysis of the single cases and/or specific genres.
Such an array has inevitably drawn the renewed attention of periodical studies: indeed, while it should be said that such a period was short lived, the results it produced, the traces and the problematic legacy it left are now to be found in the ambitious, perhaps utopian project of a shared, polyphonic culture, fuelled by constant dialectics between the one and the many.

The 1920s saw the worldwide creation of the ‘City Symphony Films,’ avant-garde montages of the daily lives of cities. This study is grounded in the historical context of the modernisation of time, demonstrating how these films reflected and coped with the rise of an abstract and standardised conception of temporality.
Through the analysis of the historical reception of the films, I argue that they were perceived as offering an alternative to the precise and impersonal measure of the clock by using cinematic time as an experiential duration, set by the depicted action and the attempt to affect viewer’s emotions through their bodily sensations.
Watching these films today highlights the extent to which the processes of unification and standardisation have only intensified since, causing a rift between time and the human body. The antidote offered by these films, in the form of cinematic time as an experiential time that affects viewers through their bodies, is relevant today more than ever.

This paper will go through an analysis of Derek Bailey’s and Lars von Trier’s works within Free Improvisation music and Dogma 95. To do that, the different historical context will be presented and analysed together with a comparison of the aesthetics of their work to have a final evaluation about the necessity of rules and spontaneity in the avant-garde art.
