« Retour à la gare de Lyon » 12 décembre 95 : quand Bourdieu soutenait les cheminots grévistes Il y a un peu plus de vingt-deux ans, le 12 décembre 1995, le sociologue Pierre Bourdieu prononçait un discours mémorable devant une assemblée de cheminots grévistes réunis dans la salle de spectacles du comité d'entreprise de la gare de Lyon 1. Ce discours semble retrouver aujourd'hui une remarquable actualité, au regard de la rafale actuelle de réformes structurelles qui visent à tranformer en profondeur la société française, et notamment une réforme du statut de la SNCF et des cheminots. Cette impression demande cependant à être analysée. Qu'est-ce qui, dans ce discours, nous parle encore aujourd'hui ? Naissance du « tous ensemble » Rappelons d'abord le contexte. Le 12 décembre 1995, donc, défilaient dans les rues de France deux millions de manifestants selon les syndicats et un million selon la police. Rien qu'à Paris, la manifestation réunissait près d'un million de personnes selon les syndicats, la moitié selon la police. C'était en tout cas la manifestation la plus importante depuis le 13 mai 1968 et le point culminant d'un mouvement social exceptionnel. En jeu l'avenir du « Plan Juppé » présenté le 15 novembre par le premier ministre devant l'Assemblée nationale et qui prévoyait entre autres mesures la fixation annuelle d'un taux d'évolution des dépenses de santé, la hausse des cotisations sociales des salariés, l'allongement de la durée de cotisations retraites pour les fonctionnaires, à quoi s'ajoutait l'alignement des régimes spéciaux, dont celui des cheminots, sur le régime général des retraites. Le mouvement d'opposition à ces réformes d'une une rare ampleur se développe en décembre notamment dans les services publics et dans une moindre mesure dans le privé, mais avec un soutien massif de la popluation au point que l'on a pu parler alors de « grève par procuration ». Le 15 décembre le gouvernement Juppé retire la plus grande partie de son projet de réforme. Ce mouvement social de 95 est aussi un temps où la gauche s'est déchirée, partagée entre les « réalistes » qui, avec la revue Esprit et la direction de la CFDT soutenaient des mesures « rationnelles » et 1 Le disocurs sera publiée dans Libération le 14 décembre sous le titre « Je suis ici pour dire notre soutien » et plus tard dans Contre-feux, Raisons d'agir,1998, sous le titre « « Contre la destruction d'une civilisation ».

My article examines the relationship between space, class and gender using wealthy golf clubs in contemporary Mexico City as a case study. I argue that these clubs are strategic sites where economic elites naturalize the arbitrary logic of their own privilege through the spatial reification of class and gender principles. The article is based on two main sources of information, a) an ethnography of three exclusive golf clubs; and b) 58 in-depth interviews conducted among golfers, caddies, and other people related to the world of golf. In theoretical terms, I argue that Bourdieu's concepts of doxa and habitus represent two notions that allow researchers to examine the multiple ways in which economic elites perpetuate dynamics of domination and subordination through space and spatial practices. This work fills a void in the literature of contemporary elites in Latin America as well as suggests a studying-up space-sensitive sociological perspective.

One major strand of Pierre Bourdieu’s work involved revealing the interests, struggles, and structures of domination underlying apparently disinterested values and ideals. This article discusses the set of values and ideals surrounding folklore and reconstructs Bourdieu's analysis of the idea of “folk” or “popular” (“populaire”), showing that Bourdieu regarded the use of the term populaire as an instance of misrecognition or mystification. Bourdieu’s formulation implies, in other words, that the popular and the ideals attached to it – mere mystifications – are less real than the relations of domination that they conceal. This article, by contrast, asks what kind of critical analysis might enable social scientists to adequately account for the reality of ideals even while also understanding the complex role that ideals play in social struggles – struggles for domination as well as for solidarity and liberation. The guiding question of the article is thus at once methodological, ontological, and political: how can researchers criticize their objects of research while still respecting the legitimacy of these objects as things in the world, and without placing researchers' own analytic categories in a world apart from the categories that structure their objects of research?

The aim of this work is to discuss the literature written by women in a decentralized way to
what is culturally attributed to the feminine and the very notion of woman, which also compulsorily
supposes heterosexuality. The critical reading proposed has the basic concept of "space off" (DE
LAURETIS, 1994) to think the speeches that inhabit spaces inside and outside the dominant culture, the
"blind spot" implicit but invisible in a position of contradiction and resistance capable of (re)constructing
and (re)inscripting the gender. Initially, I seek to demonstrate why the notion of feminine is here
problematized, opting for thinking literature written by women and about lesbianity as a discourse that
comes from this alternative space, from the breaches of the hegemonic discourse, threatening its stability.
Then the work Thérèse et Isabelle (2000) by Violette Leduc is here analyzed to think about the possibilities
in the literature of a discourse, whose theme is not only an experience of women, but the relationship
between two girls, articulated in a text that explores the desiring body in its plurality. Such work is
identified as belonging to the “lesbian continuum” thought by Adrienne Rich (2010), whose very existence
is a way to break the hegemonic discourse through the fissures breaking out inside the discourse itself.

Since the DCMS Creative Industries Mapping Document highlighted the key role played by creative activities in the UK economy and society, the creative industries agenda has expanded across Europe and internationally. It has the support of local authorities, regional development agencies, research councils, arts and cultural agencies and other sector organisations. Within this framework, higher education institutions have also engaged in the creative agenda but have struggled to define their role in this growing sphere of activities. Higher Education and the Creative Economy critically engages with the complex interconnections between higher education, geography, cultural policy and the creative economy. This book is organised into four sections which articulate the range of dynamics that can emerge between higher education and the creative economy: partnership and collaboration across higher education institutions and the creative and cultural industries; the development of creative human capital; connections between arts schools and local art scenes; and links with broader policy directions and work. While it has a strong UK component, it also includes international perspectives, specifically from Australia, Singapore, Europe and the USA. This authoritative collection challenges the boundaries of creative and cultural industry development by bringing together international experts from a range of subject areas, presenting researchers with a unique multidisciplinary approach to the topic. This edited collection will be of interest to researchers and policy-makers working in the area of creative and cultural industries development.

This article examines the development of the ‘troubled families’ narrative that emerged following the riots in England in 2011, drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Loïc Wacquant. Their work is briefly discussed before the current concern about ‘troubled families’ is located in its wider historical and political context. The response to the riots and the emergence and development of the official concept of ‘troubled families’ is then examined. It is argued that the establishment and subsequent expansion of the Troubled Families programme was part of a wider process of neoliberal state-crafting that was undertaken by the coalition government, and which is likely to be continued under the new Conservative administration in the United Kingdom (UK). The article pays particular attention to the centrality of ‘the family’ in this neoliberal restructuring and adds to the emerging literature on neoliberal forms of governing families in the UK at the current time.

The book Nonidentities. Tillion, Fanon, Bourdieu, Derrida and the Dilemma of Decolonization presents the histories of four French-writing, XXth century intellectuals whose biographies were associated with Independence War-era Algiers. Its goal is such a reading of their works that could uncover its Algerian-French duality. On one hand, the experience of close, direct biographic contact with Algiers allowed for a view from a distance (cultural, social and political) on France and Europe, which sharpened the view and imbued it with characteristics of criticism, but on the other education in the French cultural circle allowed for a specific way of writing and thinking about Algiers, a specific way of understanding and experiencing it. At the same time, that specific way (ways), which was shaped by assumptions placed at the foundations of certain traditions of thinking and related interpretative strategies - displays its power, but also its limitations in the confrontation with experience. The postcolonial timbre that connects the works of those authors does not limit itself to the confines of a single theory, but is located inside the entirety of contemporary humanities. It gives it its dynamism, but it also blows it up, that is to say by not allowing a permanent identity to be established. The decolonization of Algiers was not just a direct cause of the crystallization of basic terms characteristic to emancipatory discourses of the second half of the XXth century and first decades of the XXIst, but also a kind of social laboratory in which previous-century ideas of classic social philosophy could be put to test.
In exposing the Algerian entanglement of those authors, I did not seek to reveal hitherto unknown facts. My intention was an attempt at reading their works in a way that would highlight the French-Algerian duality and that unfull, unfinal and unfree of doubt belonging, cut across by the unerasable boundary between the two opposing shores of the Mediterranean, between “metropole” and “colonies”, “North” and “South”. This boundary is not only variously present in the texts I analyze, but also is the foundation of their strength and originality.

“Here” and “there” are not stable references. “Here” can at one time in France, at another in Algiers. This is the source of alterity, of the reversibility of points of view. To paraphrase a popular notion by Claude Lévi-Strauss, one can say that on one hand an experience of close, direct, biographical contact with Algiers can allow a view from afar, that is a look at France and Europe from a cultural, social and political distance. This makes the view sharper and imbues it with critical strength. On the other, education in the French culture allows a certain way of writing and thinking Algiers, a certain way of understanding and experiencing it. At the same time, this way (or those ways, because they are multiple) - established through assumptions laying at the foundations of certain traditions of thought and interpretative strategies associated with them - reveals then its limitations through confrontation with experiences, that is with with people, living and dead, people in flesh and bone.

The work I am describing here is not a book about the history of Algiers, but rather about a few French-speaking French intellectuals. They were all connected through Algiers, but also divided in how their varied biographical experiences of contact with the stormy history of that country in the XXth century was then processed by them. In that, it served to create an important, although always obvious, element of their attitudes and ways of critically examining the social, cultural, political and ethical. Neither is it a work from the field of research on collective memory. I am not posing questions about the causes of forgetting the history of Algiers and the European, especially French, participation in its fates. I am not attempting to “unforget” that story. However, it is my intention to directly address the colonial entanglement of the thought of the authors described, so that it can be properly appraised in the context of their intellectual work. It will allow a better understanding of what they had to say, and who and where we are, when we today ask questions in the language framework they built.

Matters of Algiers are not ones I follow closely, and postcolonialism understood as a complete, ready theory is not a perspective I employ to read the texts. What I call anticolonial or postcolonial timbre in analyzed works is not limited to a single theory, but is at home at the heart of the entirety of contemporary humanities. It gives it its dynamism, but also blows it up, allowing no stable identity. In searching for ways that Western critical thought can follow after the works of Bourdieu or Derrida, we find evidence that it is not, and maybe has never been “Western” in the sense that the language of identity implies, and that it is its nonidentity that makes it positive.

Nonidentities. Tillion, Fanon, Bourdieu, Derrida and the Dilemmas of Decolonization came to be as a result of at least two years of research based on queries both locally and abroad. To write it, I used foreign-language sources and materials that are poorly or not at all known in the Polish humanities, and which I hope to introduce to the local academic exchange. Many of them should be translated into Polish. I attempted to write the book in a way that, in spite of its extensive bibliographical references, allows it to be read by audiences outside the academic circles. In my view, the matters that the described authors touch and which I highlight, often against the grain of traditional interpretations, are of utmost importance. They deal with matters such as immigration, cultural fundamentalism or violence in service of political aims. In materials analyzed I show, on one hand, the nonobviousness of those issues, and on the other cognitive limits of the tools usually utilized to describe them.

Η επιλογή της κριτικής παρουσίασης του αναλυτικού προγράμματος και της φιλοσοφίας που διέπει το International Baccalaureate Programme γίνεται για να εμπλουτιστεί η συζήτηση για την περαιτέρω αλλαγή των αναλυτικών προγραμμάτων στη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση και τον τρόπο πρόσβασης στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση.
Η προσέγγιση του θέματος της παρούσας εργασίας βασίστηκε στην ανάλυση του Bourdieu που εξηγεί το ρόλο της επίσημης σχολικής εκπαίδευσης στην παραγωγή και νομιμοποίηση του πολιτισμικού κεφαλαίου και της συμβολικής διαφοράς που προκύπτει ως αποτέλεσμα της διαδικασίας αυτής.

Résumé français: Certains métiers sont attractifs, moins pour le confort matériel qu’ils garantissent qu’en raison de l’image valorisée et valorisante qui leur est associée, ou de l’épanouissement dont ils portent la promesse. Ils reposent sur un fort engagement personnel, qui peut être subjectivement vécu sur le mode de la passion et du désintéressement. L’orientation professionnelle vers le secteur culturel participe de cette logique vocationnelle. Quelles sont les modalités de cet appel ? Qu’est-ce qui prédispose à y répondre ? Quels sens ces orientations revêtent-elles ? Pour répondre à ces questions, Vincent Dubois a enquêté sur les étudiants qui se destinent à l’administration culturelle. En révélant qui et ce qui s’y investit, ce livre apporte un éclairage inédit sur ces métiers. Ces positions intermédiaires où se croisent héritages familiaux et investissements scolaires, espoirs d’ascension sociale et lutte contre le déclassement, offrent plus largement un point de vue privilégié pour l’analyse des modes de reproduction dans la France contemporaine.

English abstract: Some occupations are attractive, not so much in terms of material comfort as in terms of prestige and self-fulfillment. Among them, some imply a strong personal commitment, which can be subjectively experienced in the mode of passion and selflessness. The combinations of these aspects define a vocational logic, of which the choice of a career in the cultural sector can provide a good example. What are the terms of this calling? What predisposes individuals to answer it? What are the meanings of such an orientation? To answer these questions, this book focuses on would-be cultural managers. By identifying their social patterns, by revealing the resources, expectations and visions of the world they invest in their choice, it sheds new light on these occupations. In these intermediary and indeterminate social positions, family heritages intersect with educational strategies; aspirations of upward mobility with tactics against downward mobility. Career choices in cultural management constitute therefore a revealing case, for a renewed analysis of modes of social reproduction. The empirical findings of this research conducted in France are set in a broader comparative perspective, at the European level and with the USA.

O propósito do artigo é revisar os objetivos e o sentido do ensino de prática jurídica penal, defendendo seu potencial como espaço de compreensão crítica da justiça criminal a partir do conceito de campo e da abordagem praxiológica de Pierre Bourdieu. Para tanto, dois movimentos de aproximação teórica são conjugados aos métodos tradicionais: a sociologia das profissões no campo penal e a produção teórica das ciências humanas voltada aos três grandes blocos temáticos relacionados à justiça criminal, que são as polícias, a justiça e a prisão. O objetivo é propor diretrizes teóricas para um ensino jurídico que possa agregar reflexividade à formação do futuro profissional do sistema de justiça criminal, entendida como capacidade de reconhecimento da doxa ou senso comum do próprio campo. Reflexividade, nesse contexto, significa a capacidade de questionar as pré-construções do senso comum e da experiência ordinária, condição de possibilidade para o desencantamento das instituições e profissões ao mesmo tempo em que eleva a capacidade de percepção da própria responsabilidade pelos atos praticados em sua natureza violenta. Teaching in the shadow of the colonial relations in Israel/Palestine, there is, I believe, no more pressing pedagogical issue than exposing the ways in which hierarchies of “being” are produced through essentialist ethno-nationalist forms of identification, where privilege is very unevenly distributed. I focus my discussion on Giovanni’s Room, since, after teaching this text for several years, I have only recently come to realize that James Baldwin’s second novel can provide us with some crucial insights into how privilege operates. Originally I placed this Baldwin novel in my course—”20th-century African-American Novel”—in order to provoke discussions about canonicity, normative assumptions about US “ethnic” literature, the relationship between the author’s racial identity and the text as well as to stimulate students to think more critically about race and heteronormativity. After all, Giovanni’s Room, written during the hyper-heteronormative period of the 1950s, is about a tragic love affair between two white men, but it is also a novel written by a
queer African American. Over the years, however, I have become more and more convinced that it is important to move away from a focus on any particular category of identity, such as homosexuality, masculinity, and/or race, and to highlight, instead, the broader notion of stratified privilege as it manifests itself in the novel.

The book focuses on the breakup of the Yugoslav Federation and wars that followed viewed through the comic art in the local and international press. War propaganda and political discourse are examined and placed in the larger historical context of this conflict. The study reveals that Yugoslav cartoonists anticipated, as early as 1984, the disintegration of the country and were forecasting armed conflict in 1989. Using print media and comic art as a primary source of investigation, the author has presented the mental representation of the war as seen in press cartoons, both chronologically and thematically. A representative sampling of some 400 cartoons (out of a database of almost 7’500) and dozens of interviews undertaken with political cartoonists in the 1990s are quoted in the book as a primary source.

‘Shamanism’ is a problematic and contested concept. After Westerners first heard the term in Siberia at the end of the seventeenth century, it rapidly acquired a remarkable range of meanings in different contexts. Theologians saw shamans as sidekicks of the devil, enlightenment thinkers considered them as mentally ill or retarded. From the eighteenth century onwards, the Romantic image of the shaman as an artistically gifted mystic became fashionable, whereas nineteenth-century folklorists, in turn, used the term ‘shamanism’ in nationalist quests for the essence of the Volksgeist of their nation. Twentieth-century psychologists identified shamans both as schizophrenics and as primal therapists. During the 1960s shamans came to be perceived as psychonauts who used hallucinogens to gain access to the divine essence of life.
During the 1970s an American anthropologist created workshops that, he claimed, were based on universal shamanic principles and practices. Through so-called archaic techniques his students could get in touch with the healing forces of nature. Contemporary forms of shamanism present themselves as countercultural, but a historical-sociological interpretation suggests that it is no coincidence that shamanism especially gained popularity at the time that neoliberal capitalism became dominant. Neoliberalisation disempowered people over their working lives and forced them to exert self-authority and make choices in their lives. Contemporary shamanic practices are also focused on self-authority, can be consumed in a free market and offer opportunities for empowerment. Instead of changing society, however, contemporary Western shamanism contributes to structure the structures it claims to resist.

The article addresses the complex relationship between practice theory and actor-network theory (ANT). It closely examines the similarities and differences between the two and asks how the ANT perspective can be beneficial for practice theory. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu, Anthony Giddens and Theodore Schatzki's work, this study briefly identifies the theoretical and methodological standpoint of practice theory. It then turns to Bruno Latour's ANT, discussing his methodological approach towards the social. Next, it identifies the differences between the two approaches, offering a critique of ANT from the perspective of practice theory. In the conclusion, the contribution identifies the potential of ANT approaches for practice theory at the methodological level. It argues that the methodological principles of ANT can integrate with practice theory to form what I call a 'transitive methodology'. This analytical perspective does not locate sub-jectivity and agency at a single spot. Instead, it situates them in a heterogeneous network of practices and materialities.

The publication of Bourdieu and Passeron's Reproduction had a mixed response. On the one hand the work was criticised for its determinism and pessimistic prognosis of the possibilities of educational change and, on the other hand, praised for its complex analysis of the relationship between education and class inequalities, and the workings of class domination through the educational system. This paper explores the reception Reproduction, and its companion text The Inheritors received before examining the contribution they have made, and continue to make, to understandings of social class inequalities in education. It argues that the work has continuing significance in contemporary England just as it had in 1960s France. As well as examining the relevance of Reproduction for the twenty-first century, it also focuses on the potential of Bourdieu and Passeron's analysis for enabling animated and agentic conceptualisations of educational and social reproduction by drawing on recent case-study data from English schools. However, it also argues that the lack of sufficient questioning of the dominant educational code, as well as the absence of any moral dimensions of class culture make their study a work in progress which needed the insights of Bourdieu's later work to bring its analysis to fruition.

Theorizing a sociology of emotion that links micro-level resources to macro-level forces, this article extends previous work on emotional capital in relation to emotional experiences and management. Emerging from Bourdieu's theory of social practice, emotional capital is a form of cultural capital that includes the emotion-specific, trans-situational resources that individuals activate and embody in distinct fields. Contrary to prior conceptualizations, I argue that emotional capital is neither wholly gender-neutral nor exclusively feminine. Men may lay claim to emotional capital as a valued resource within particular fields. The concept of emotional capital should be seen as distinct from emotion management and felt emotional experience and distinctions between primary and secondary sources of capital clarify the simultaneously durable and evolving nature of capital and the habitus. To illustrate these conceptual refinements, I use interview and diary data from male nurses. Men bring primary emotional capital, developed during primary socialization, to the nursing profession while also developing secondary capital through occupational socialization centered on empathy and compassion. The construct of emotional capital is refined as a structured yet dynamic resource developed through primary and secondary socialization and activated and embodied in everyday emotion practice.

This paper focuses on the role of contemporary art in international relations and world politics. In IR, art is often examined within the framework of cultural diplomacy, country branding, and soft power, or approached as a site of resistance. We argue that the concept of heteronomy offers an alternative conceptual framework for analysing contemporary art in world politics. It highlights the interaction of various fields such as art, commerce, the state and media. We concretise this approach with an analysis of the Venice Biennale. We show that the Biennale is heteronomous in the sense of being an arena where actors from various fields struggle for power by accumulating different types of capital. We focus our analysis on the Russian national pavilion in 2011–2015 and show how the efforts of the country’s elite to legitimise its position are intertwined with the projects of the state, sponsors, artists, curators and art market actors.

Some numbers on religiosity in the U.S.  We are far more religious than our narrative of secularity would suggest.  Religion and politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Saba Mahmood, and Pierre Bourdieu's Doxa and Habitus.  Mahmood suggests:  what about a conservative, religious-orthodox feminism?  Teaching about women's empowerment / agency and the women's veiling movement in MENA.

In this pre-proof version of chapter 2 of my book, 'The Formation of Gaming Culture, a rationale is presented for focusing on UK gaming magazines published in the 1980s and first half of the 1990s. The chapter describes the background to the
magazines and asserts their pioneering role in focusing on game programs. The magazines are both participants in shaping the nascent culture of gaming and indexical for its development since they constitute a record of its main turning points and achievements. The study uses two methods to analyse them: discourse analysis focused on three analytic themes (game appraisal; the normalizing effects of gaming discourse and, finally, its gendered articulation) and a more quantitative content analysis that is intended to support, complement and, where necessary, temper the claims of the discourse analysis.

The main goal of this study is to verify the effects of cultural capital on students' performance in an official test applied by the Brazilian government, as part of the National Assessment of Basic Education (Saeb). The data set used is from 2003 and involves 52.434 students. The standard test is applied every two years in the fields of mathematics and languages. A questionnaire is applied along with the test in order to measure the student's characteristics as well as their families' profile. The question of this research is: what is the impact of cultural capital on student's performance in the Saeb test? The theoretical approach is based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu. As contributions of Brazilian scholars the study includes the ideas of Nelson Silva and Carlos Hasenbalg and Carlos Ribeiro. The model of study considered the students' grades in the Saeb test as the dependent variable and the cultural capital as the main independent variable. The descriptive analysis was used as well as regression models in order to obtain the effect of the independent variables over the dependent one. The preliminary and main results show that there is significant association between levels of cultural capital and student's performance in the Saeb test. Specifically, there is a significant and positive correlation between parents' education, computer ownership, access to internet and newspaper reading with the performance in the Saeb test.

Notaremos que a produção musical independente se fortalece a partir da necessidade de romper com o modelo que era imposto pela indústria cultural. Partindo deste contexto, analisaremos o selo Beira Rio Records como objeto desta pesquisa para ilustrar a discussão que estamos trazendo. OBJETIVOS Este trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar que essa autonomia está presente simbolicamente em vários aspectos da produção musical independente, seja na forma de gravação, a estética escolhida e os processos de divulgação. É importante destacar que esta não é uma regra para todas as cenas da produção musical independente, visto que o trabalho tem como objeto apenas um selo dentro de uma cena bastante ampla e diversa do campo da produção musical independente.

Since the start of the pandemic, schools around the world have closed their doors to children to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. This meant that many parents were forced to start home schooling their children which requiring significant efforts, knowledge, and the right equipment. Home schooling, or 'Elective Home Education', requires parents to ensure that their child receives efficient full-time education appropriate to his-her age and ability (Department for Education, 2019). Home schooling has become the new 'norm' during the first and third lockdowns in England. This paper reports on relevant policy analysis, empirical research/literature review and findings from semi-structured interviews with parents who home schooled their primary school aged children. Findings indicate that the habitus of familial environment and the social position of field are significant determinants of education outcomes, in which the cultural and material deprivation have played a part. This paper highlights that home schooling has brought inequalities in educational experience into sharp focus and has shown the importance of embodied preferences and cultural goods in the drive to improve outcomes across the country. Had cultural approaches not been so different, the experiences of children from the North and the South, and from richer and poorer families, would not have been so different. Findings also shows how financial privilege does not provide an escape from stress and how parents' well-being, regardless of their economic background, has been affected by home-schooling.

Following recent studies using Bourdieusian field theory to examine journalistic freedom and media criticism, we investigated the Turkish press using a comparative perspective focusing on the media’s interaction with the nexus of power/government and market mechanisms. Using a snapshot of four Turkish newspapers in 2013, we analyzed their critical content vis-a-vis reporting about the government. To explain differences of criticism across these media outlets, we extended our qualitative and quantitative analyses to three sociopolitically key years with regard to the consolidation of governmental power. Our results indicate that what explains media criticism goes beyond structural factors and should also involve both between- and within-field variations, emphasizing media as a semiautonomous field.

The aim of this paper is to offer an alternative to a priori theorising in research on firm-level growth and environmental sustainability. We outline an approach that combines John Shotter's phenomenology with post-hoc application of the Bourdieusian concepts of habitus, practices and social capital. This is illustrated empirically through a study conducted with a small group of Finnish entrepreneurs, which examines their lived experience of growth alongside its practical application in
their ventures. The entrepreneurs' responses reveal holistic perspectives on growth that extend beyond the economic to incorporate personal commitments to norms ofcollectivity and well-being for themselves and others. The paper offers an exploratory but empirically grounded approach, arguing that a combination of insiders' perspectives
and attention to the social embedding of economic activity challenge the
dichotomous distinctions between sustainable and conventional entrepreneurship
and reveal a degree of commonality that would not be evident via conventional
categorisations on the basis of features such as business model type.

El presente artículo estudia la génesis del prohibicionismo de drogas y su efecto epistemológico-político en el campo científico siguiendo la propuesta analítica de Pierre Bourdieu. A través de una revisión teórica y documental crítica se problematiza, mediante la reflexividad del campo científico de las drogas, la formación del campo y el habitus científico que ha estado fuertemente condicionado por el proceso de demonización de las drogas y usuarios, a partir de un determinismo farmacológico que asocia los comportamientos individuales y sociales con las sustancias. Se recomienda avanzar hacia una revolución científica que contenga un cambio de paradigma y una transformación del habitus científico-profesional en el campo interdisciplinario, atendiendo a la complejidad social, cultural y política que influyen en las maneras de conocer e intervenir la realidad.

This article argues that the writing classroom’s practical life can profoundly impact students’ cultural and political beliefs. Privileged here are the mundane activities and interactions associated with reviewing writing, which encompasses the practice of grade comparison as well as the more common, but commonly simplified, practices of peer, teacher, and performance review. The case study unfolded herein shows how an array of review practices enabled one student to develop a critical perspective on both her implicit bias against non-white writers and her own limitations as a writer. An analysis of the case study suggests the value and validity of conceptualizing practical life as a rhetorical and non-functional totality.

The Troubled Families Programme (TFP), established by the Coalition Government in the aftermath of the 2011 riots, set out to 'turn around' the lives of the 120,000 most 'troubled families' in England. When the rhetoric surrounding 'troubled families' is closely examined, a number of competing, and often contradictory, messages begin to emerge. This chapter examines the ways in which the Troubled Families Programme is positioned firstly by central government and secondly by local authorities and practitioners. Adopting a 'street-level lens' (Brodkin 2011a), interviews with managers and workers in one local authority area are analysed to examine 'the complexity of interactions concealed beneath the apparent monotony of bureaucratic routine' (Bourdieu, 2005: 140). The chapter concludes with reflections on the Janus-faced nature of the Troubled Families Programme and a discussion of its role in the crafting of a new 'smart' state.

Waters (California State Univ., Chico) is by education and profession a sociologist, and it shows on every page of this work. If readers are not familiar with the term "habitus," they will be by the end of the book. The term "habitus" means a certain behavior or belief that has become part of a society's structure and ingrained into individuals and sociological systems of that culture when the original purpose of that belief can no longer be recalled. In short, people continue to do things because that is the way they were taught, giving little thought as to why they do them. The word appears on nearly every page of this book, and is used to illustrate various sociological perspectives on the field of education. What this means is that, in the author's view, schools in the US exist the way they do because most of the people in the US are parts of larger bureaucracies, and schools reflect the needs of those bureaucracies by preparing children to fulfill bureaucratic roles once they become adults.
