The Human Body

Il contributo prende in considerazione il fenomeno della prostituzione delle donne libere nell'antica Roma con l’obiettivo di meglio chiarire la percezione che i giuristi avevano della corporeità umana. A tal fine si considerano varie fonti giuridiche in tema di prostituzione, e se ne deduce che il corpo della donna appare il principale
‘strumento del mestiere’: un oggetto da impiegare a seconda delle decisioni dell’individuo cui era naturalmente congiunto o di chi su di esso esercitava un qualche potere. Il richiamo costante al corpo nelle definizioni giuridiche di meretrix, oltre a comunicare una prevalenza della ‘disponibilità dell’oggetto corpo’ rispetto a una più astratta ‘disponibilità a compiere attività sessuale’, potrebbe addirittura simboleggiare una primordiale percezione del proprio corpo come un bene di cui ognuno ha facoltà di disporre come crede.

Human body communication (HBC) is a short-range wireless communication in the vicinity of, or inside a human body by using the human body as a propagation medium. HBC is divided into two solutions: galvanic coupling and capacitive coupling. The former requires one pair of electrodes in both the transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX), whereas the latter only requires a single electrode for the TX and the RX. The capacitive coupling makes it possible to miniaturize the size of device, and is more suitable for applications requiring the devices to be miniature enough. Since HBC can transfer in high data rates while maintaining low power consumption, and provide high security and easy integration within body-worn devices, HBC shows great potential for wearable devices. Moreover, as the proportion of biological tissues such as muscle, fat, and skeleton is different between individuals, the overall dielectric constants of human body are diverse, as well as the signal propagated through human body. The diverse HBC propagation signal can be utilized as the biometric trait to authenticate individuals. By means of employing the HBC as both the authentication and the communication approaches, the size of wearable devices will be more miniature. Due to the use of propagation signal between devices, the HBC authentication is suitable for wearable device regardless of the location.

Three experiments investigated the specific spatial relations that define the human body configuration. In Experiment 1, participants searched for scrambled bodies amongst normal distractors. In Experiments 2 and 3 participants were asked to identify whether single body images (upright or inverted) were scrambled or normal. Scrambled bodies had head or limbs displaced to either symmetrical or asymmetrical positions. Experiment 1 showed that asymmetrical violations are recognized faster than symmetrical violations. All three experiments revealed that when the number of structural violations is held constant, head violations are recognized faster than limb violations. Experiment 3 also showed a greater inversion effect for scrambled bodies that maintained head on top and vertical symmetry, providing evidence that these are key spatial relations in the human body configuration. Overall, the results supported our hypothesis that the human body configuration is defined primarily by a head at the apex of a vertically symmetrical body.
