A unique piece of its kind in the world literary history, the «Travels of Adrup Gönpo» is the narrative of the first Tibetan to spend some length of time in Europe. While in Paris, this «excentric» traveler became a fashionable figure in the press. Based on manuscripts held in archive collections, a series of edited versions of the text and press articles, I examine here the multiple aspects of displacements at work in this travelogue. Reflecting on the missing original version in Tibetan, I argue that this discovery narrative in translation produces a long-lasting effect of difference by which a Tibetan literary voice is distinctly perceptible.

Œuvre peut-être sans équivalent dans l’histoire littéraire mondiale, le «Voyage du nommé Adjroup Gumbo» est le récit du premier Tibétain à voyager en Europe. Lors de son séjour à Paris, ce voyageur «excentrique» avait proprement défrayé la chronique. Sur la base de manuscrits conservés en archives, des diverses publications du récit et du dossier de presse de l’époque, j’interroge les multiples figures de déplacement qui affectent ce texte. Tout en problématisant la question de l’absence d’une version originale en tibétain, je suis l’idée que ce récit de découverte en traduction opère un effet de différence en laissant entendre en français une voix littéraire tibétaine.
