Tsunami may pose severe damages on the structures and cause loss of human lives. In this paper, a comparative study on the numerical simulation of tsunami wave loads on 3D onshore structures is carried out using the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method based on Rankine source solution (MLPG_R) and the commercial computational fluid dynamic software StarCCM+. In this study, the tsunami wave is simplified as a collapsing water column. The results indicate that both methods have a similar accuracy level for modelling violent wave impacts but the former has better convergent property and much higher computational efficiency compared to the latter. The effects of a water pool in reducing the tsunami wave impacts are discussed.
