The Indian higher education system has undergone unprecedented growth and expansion especially during last two decades. During this period, India had created additional capacity for a mammoth 30.5 million (estimated for 2012-13) students intake in various disciplines. While the scale of this expansion is remarkable in itself, what sets it apart from earlier decades of equally aggressive expansion are absence of a deliberate and conscious strategy and an organized design that could have resulted in integrating the system of higher education with higher growth trajectory. India moved to a highly differentiated academic rigor, having wide gaps between best and worst higher educational institutions.
