byzantine and post-Byzantine inscriptions

The church of St. George stands on the southern out- skirts of the village of Kou-renta. Its monumental art,which decorates the nave and the  eastern section of the narthex, offers a wealth of information on the final phase of post-Byzantine painting and the abundant artistic production in the 18th-century Balkans, while also providing in-sights into collec- tive donations in the final century of Ottoman rule.
The book provide also information about the history of the area and the monastery of Angelomachou.
The present effort is an initiative of the Kourenta Fraternity, whose honorable members, moved by their selfless love for their ancestral home, wished to present the church of St. George as a “living post- Byzantine monument”, a legacy for subsequent generations.

This paper examines the lettering of the inscription in the Katholikon of the Holy Trinity monastery at Meteora, dated 1741, in comparison to the inscription of the church of the Dormition, situated in the village Lofiskos (old name Tsergiani), near Ioannina of Epirus, dated in 1762. The conclusion is that the painter and priest Antonios, who painted in 1741, can be identified with the painter and priest Antonios from Ioannina that painted in 1762, in cooperation with the renowned painters Anastasios and his son Ioannis, from the village Kapesovo, also near Ioannina, Epirus.
