The present poster discusses the case of a probable treponemal infection observed on an isolated young
adult probable male skull from the early modern period from a rural religious setting in Cantabria (northern
Spain) (Fig. 1). The skull (Fig. 2) was discovered in 2019 in a cemetery attached to the monastery of Santa
María de Fresno del Río (Fig. 3). The archaeological unit where the specimen was recovered from is
defined by a dismantled necropolis dated between the 15th and the 17th centuries AD (i.e., 1495-1656 cal
AD) (Fig. 4). A macro- and microscopic study, in addition to a radiocarbon and isotopic approach, was
conducted in order to characterize the bone changes present.
