Alberta

When deciding whether to become an Airbnb Host, it is important for you to understand the laws in your region or city. As a platform and online marketplace we do not provide legal advice, but we want to provide resources that may help you better understand applicable laws and regulations. This list is not exhaustive, but it may give you a good start in understanding your local laws. If you have questions, visit the short-term rental homepage or other government agencies directly, or consult a local lawyer or tax professional.

Short-term rental regulations

Short-term rentals in Alberta are regulated at the municipal level. Please check with your local municipal government regarding local regulations.

Alberta Tourism Levy

Alberta imposes a tourism levy of 4% of the purchase price of accommodations in Alberta. The Tax and Revenue Administration has put together helpful information regarding the Tourism Levy, including registration, reporting, and filing requirements here.

Operators are responsible for collecting, reporting, and remitting the levy through September 30, 2024.

Starting October 1, 2024, legislation requires any online marketplace that collects payment for temporary accommodation in Alberta to register and collect, report, and remit the tourism levy. Therefore, your registration requirement may differ as of October 1, 2024.

Detailed information about collection and reporting obligations can be found on the Alberta Tourism Levy website.

Our commitment to your community

We are committed to working with local officials to help them understand how Airbnb benefits our community. Where needed, we will continue to advocate for changes that will allow regular people to rent out their own homes.
