ABOUT Canvas

Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) and is designed to enhance teaching and learning. Canvas enables instructors to build and customize face2face, online and hybrid course offerings. In addition, students enrolled with Canvas become engaged in an interactive learning environment.

How to log into Canvas

For the best Canvas experience, users should access Canvas using a desktop or laptop computer. Canvas is browser based and can be access on a Windows or Mac computer with Internet access.

Use the Browser Checker to check that your browser is set up to use Canvas.

  • Users must use a recommended and supported browser, such as Firefox or Chrome.
  • Java must be installed and enabled on browser.
  • Popups must be enabled on the browser.

Clearing your browser's cookies and cache clears up most error messages and technical issues with the Canvas website.

FREE Canvas Student Training Course

In addition, all students have been automatically enrolled in a free, Student Canvas Training course. This is a great way to learn about Canvas, and how to access different components that you can expect to see during your live courses in the future. If you experience any difficulties accessing this course, please e-mail AOS@AState.edu with your name, e-mail address, and student ID number for further assistance.

      How To's and step-by-step instructions can be found on the Canvas Help site.

      The A-State Faculty Center staff provides faculty support and training for Canvas, including assistance with digitizing, updating or creating course content in formats suitable for use in Canvas.  

      The A-State Online Faculty Support staff provides faculty support and training for the A-State Online Services programs.

    • LTI/Third-Party Partner Integrations

      Integrations are extension tools from third-party partners (vendors) which allow faculty to enhance their Canvas course and the student experience.

      For integrations, you can easily submit this form-(Canvas Help service form) under the type of Canvas request – choose Canvas Design for review. ITS requires the IT Security Questionnaire/Vendor HECVAT to be sent and approved by Security@astate.edu  in order to proceed with setup. This will only be set up specific times of the year to avoid issues. Please have all your information submitted so we can begin the process- June 1st- August 1st would be the timeframe however depending on the course, concessions will be made.

      Feel free to share this link to the Canvas help form with anyone including students as there is a support option as well. Support for third-party partner tools is provided by the partner company. Support contacts and information for commonly used tools are listed in the sections below.

    • Lecture Capture Recording and Webinar Tools

      Kaltura (new license beginning July 1, 2021)

      Kaltura is a third party tool available in your Blackboard course. Instructors can use Kaltura to record lectures or post videos for students to watch. Students can use Kaltura to record and submit presentations and video assignments.

        Kaltura and 3rd Party Cookies

        Kaltura requires that users enable third-party cookies.

        Follow the instructions for your browser:

        Firefox

        1. Click the "menu" button in the top-right corner of your screen. This looks like three bars stacked vertically. Select Options from the menu.
        2. In the "Options" tab, choose Privacy & Security in the left sidebar navigation.
        3. Ensure that the Standard box is selected.

        Chrome

        1. Click or tap on the "Customize and control Google Chrome" button from the top-right corner of your window. This looks like three dots stacked vertically. Select Settings from that menu.
        2. Scroll down and click Privacy and Security.
        3. Select Site Settings.
        4. Click on Cookies and Site Data.
        5. Set the "Block third-party cookies" switch to "off"; make sure the circle is on the left and the bar is gray. If it's blue, that means you are blocking cookies.

        Safari for MacOS

        1. Open Safari. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Safari and then Preferences.
        2. Go to Privacy and uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking and Block all cookies.   
        3. Refresh the web tab and the Kaltura video should now display.

        Kaltura Support

        VoiceThread

        VoiceThread is a third party tool available to be used within your Canvas classes.

        VoiceThread is an online program through which you can leave comments (text, audio or webcam) around a slideshow of media.

        Turnitin

        TurnitIn is a licensed third-party plagiarism checker.

         

      • Authentication and Exam Proctoring Tools

        BioSig-ID™

        BioSig-ID identifies users by capturing their unique movements as they draw a password with their finger or mouse. BioSig-ID is used to authenticate users is some courses and programs within Blackboard Learn.

        Respondus Lockdown Browser

        Respondus LockDown Browser is required for online exams in some courses. Your Instructor will tell you if it is required for the course.

        Remote Proctor Now

        Online examinations for the Online MBA through the College of Business are proctored using the Securexam Remote Proctor Now (RPNow) system. Contact your program for proctor costs. Detailed information about the Remote Proctor, Exam Policies, and test environment requirements are included in all courses in those programs.

        • RPNow4 Update Note:Please download updated RPNow4 using the link provided by your instructor in your Online MBA course. Do not use any previously installed or downloaded version.

        ProctorU

        Online examinations for certain programs are proctored using the ProctorU system. Contact your program for more information. Detailed information about the ProctorU, Exam Policies, and test environment requirements are included in all courses in those programs.

      • How Do I Retrieve An Archived Blackboard Course

        In order to conserve storage, ITS may Archive Blackboard classes after 5 semesters. You can retrieve the Archived content from our Blackboard Utility Package.

        When you select Archived Courses in the right menu you should see a list of past courses. By clicking the listed Course ID, you can download a package file that contain all the content from the old course.

        That downloaded zip file can then be imported into a Canvas course, by selecting the Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export .zip file from the Content Type dropdown menu.

        Classes restored through the import process will only contain the materials that were used to teach the class. They do not contain student work or grades from the past class. If you need grades and student work from an Archived class, you will need to open a ticket with the ITS HelpDesk
