Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Precisely what I look for in a story!
After reading some of the excellent reviews that Peter Clines has received for 14, I purchased the audio version. I quickly realized that the plethora of shining reviews I had come across were in no way exaggerated. The believable characters and setting and realistic dialogue serve to form an extremely immersive reading experience. Each character brings their own background, expertise and perspective to the situations they find themselves in. Clines has cleverly used these to help the characters explain seemingly complicated concepts to the reader which arise throughout the story in an easily relatable manner.
This is a very well thought-out book which is littered with plenty of "WOW" moments and lots of unexpected and unpredictable twists and turns to keep the reader on his/her toes. I found myself spending hours after hitting the pause button trying to predict the meaning behind certain phenomenon or visualizing a new concept which had been introduced. Even though I usually only listen to audio books while driving, I now have to catch up on the hours I spent listening to "14" on my ipod while I was supposed to be working!
I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends and be on the lookout for future Peter Clines book releases.

Silly end but great build up.
I have listened to this book many times even though I find the ending to be a bit of a let down. The characters, the building, the descriptions all help draw you into their world.
Ray did a wonderful job with the narration and it was this book that made me a fan of his and go on to buy other books of his.

Sticks true to the theme of the genre.
Fantastic buildup to some truly horriffic revelations, each minor discrepancy is a omen of things to come. For most part of the book I was hooked and I really wanted to know the secrets of the bizzare apartment block. My qualms about the book are that I felt one particular twist important to the plot was a bit too telegraphed and that the climactic chapters were a little weaker than I had hoped.

Very entertaining and well narrated.
Lots of tension and twists and turns in this novel. Believable and likeable characters. Clever ending too that raps up the whole story nicely.

Surprising
Surprising and unpredictable. Read this on a recommendation and was absorbed. Would read more from this author. Not my usual genre but may have converted me.

one bed, one bath, one extra dimension & a monster
Nate is in need of somewhere affordable to live, a girlfriend, and a life purpose when he hears from about the Kavach Building. A bargain to rent, friendly neighbours, and a possible portable to another universe.
I really liked this book. The characters were engaging and I enjoyed their banter, there was a mystery, potentially some danger, and I enjoyed the style of writing. I love the idea of old buildings having history and a mystery, I'm disappointed that my 1 year old building probably doesnt have a hidden dimension in the attic. I have seen some references to this book being a horror and unless you're very easily scared I would say it is more scifi/fantasy than horror. My only criticism is that the last part of the book seemed to be wrapped up fairly quickly without any explanation, but I will continue with the series and hopefully learn more of this crazy universe

woah!
Really, just grab this and listen to the awesome narration! Great premise, great characters, and some other characters that you'll never forget (hi, squales!). Can be quite nerve-wracking, so if you listen while operating a vehicle don't expect a peaceful journey.
After this you will want to read the rest of the books, although they are not really a series, more like related books (step-books?).
