Amazingly detailed
This book is astoundingly well-researched. I was frequently taken aback by the level of detail. It is written in an easy to follow, linear fashion. I was born in the late sixties and my parents had their own hippie food thing going on so this book was quite interesting to me. I highly recommend it.

Fascinating, beautifully written, and entertaining

Very interesting!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I learned the roots of a lot of things in my childhood. I didn’t realize how new to our shores restaurants sharing cuisines from around the world were when I was growing up. I had the great privilege of frequenting Washington, DC, as a kid and I carry my passion for the cuisine of other countries to this day.

If you grew up eating health food you'll love it
I'm only an hour or so into Hippie Food, and I'm already dreading when it's going to end. First, you need to know I grew up in Southern California in the 1970s eating health food and good, clean, simple foods.
The author, and great narrator, goes into depth about the "health food" restaurants we used to go to like The Good Earth (famous for the often imitated cinnamon tea) and The Old World. We bought carrot juice and natural peanut butter at health food stores.
Hearing the history of health food, aka hippie food, all the way back to the 1800s is super fun. The book does not dwell too long on any of the topics but weaves a back story of how people started eating more healthily despite the presence of so many processed food cookbooks and foods on the market.
It'll make for great conversation and thinking while shopping for health food as well as over dinner!
