I loved the story! You couldn’t predict it and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next. There were moments where the narrator was inconsistent but I could also understand why. Overall enjoyed!

Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College–Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

There are times when I cannot STAND the writing in this book. Sometimes, oftentimes it borders on YA teenage angst and having read another book outside of this from Yarros I know she is capable of higher quality writing. The storyline itself however is very gripping, which always pivots me from 3 stars to 4 and wanting to read part 2 earlier than the release.

Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Jane Austen is something else! Intellectual, witty, downright hilarious. I loved this book so much, and wish classic lit was still a part of middle school curriculum!

If I were ever to write a memoir, it would be titled, Jenna Peterson’s Guide to Dating Emotionally Unavailable Men. I’m like a professional at it. I’m so good, I can take any dysfunctional man and turn him into Prince Charming, just in time for him to dump me and then go on to marry the next woman he dates. I’m about ready to give up on loving real men and focus on lusting over fictional men in the Turkish dramas I can’t stop devouring.

I went searching for a good romcom and thought, hey pumpkin spice! But no. The writing style is okay, character development lacking and it takes FOREVER (quite literally the end) before actual plot development arises.

Was a 4 star-er but then…

This book was a rush for me. I didn’t want to do anything else but listen to it.
I was team Wenshuang the ENTIRE time. And honestly, the author did an amazing job of waiting til the last second.
I believed he genuinely loved Xingyin, and it deeply annoyed me that she wasn’t allowing him to redeem himself nor trust the moments he actually DID redeem himself. It shouldn’t have taken death for her to realize his honesty.
As I reflected more on the novel there were so many things to appreciate.
1. Xingyin not marrying Liewei because she knew she didn’t want the life of an empress. She didn’t want to govern the immortal realm, but rather, desired a life of her own means.
2. Xingyin allowed herself to grieve alone versus having a buffer from her family and friends. She embraced her grief in an unconventional way, and it’s something we need more of.
3. The author’s pacing was amazing! I’m glad she allowed us a moment to grieve over the loss of Wenshuang versus a moment where he comes back to life on the next page. I really thought it was over.
4. Xingyin remained honorable when she asked for two elixirs.
5. Xingyin waited for Wenshuang the same way he waited for her.
I honestly want to write to Sue Lynn Tan asking her to make a novella so we can see Xingyin’s and Wenshuang‘a relationship develop.
Overall this duology down to the cover was sound. It wasn’t your typical “I know what to expect” novel.
