Publisher's summary

Ahren: Ahren's life consists of being beaten up by his drunkard father or bullied by the village lads. But at the annual suitability tests for apprenticeships, the young boy finds himself selected by Falk, the guardian of the forest, to be his apprentice and his world is turned upside down.

From his new master, he learns the skills of archery and how to fight the Dark Ones. And then, on the day of the Spring Ceremony, there is another unexpected turn of events. He touches the Stone of the Gods and it illuminates for the first time ever. It isn't long before a cantankerous wizard turns up and urges Falk and Ahren into action.

The Naming: Two Einhans have been found but the third is still at large. Time is of the essence. Ahren's Appointment as the 13th Paladin - assisted by the three Einhans - must occur by the winter solstice. If not, He, Who Forces will awaken before his time and plunge the unprepared peoples of Jorath into the depths of darkness.

The Brazen City: The saga of the 13th Paladin continues. Join him and his friends on their adventures in the Sunplains and enjoy meeting his old friends in Deepstone again.

Note: This audiobook includes Books 1-3 in the 13th Paladin series.

Unexpectedly Fantastic

So I confess I had a long to do list and only one credit to my name so so wanted a long listen. I did not expect to love this story or that my teen AND preteen would also be pulled in. The story is classic hero who overcomes story and the narrator is excellent. While the story seems familiar in the best ways it is fresh in the assembly. It was a nice place to land in a sea of who can find the newest way to upend or twist a protagonist. I ended up buying credits and we are now on book 9. Excellent story well written well narrated

Boxed Set is a Great Value and Excellent Narrative

This Boxed Set of the first three books in Torsten Weitze's The 13th Paladin series is a great value for one credit. Almost 44 hours of sprawling classic fantasy, this one scratched an itch for me. Gildart Jackson's restrained narrative is nothing short of masterful, as he hits and maintains the rarely attained sweet spot of "just enough" inflection to separate and develop each of the characters without becoming overdramatic or overbearing.

The story has fun world building, classic fantasy elements such as magic, elves, dwarves, good guys and bad guys, medieval-esque social elements, and a heroic arc, which includes an origin story.

I'm unfamiliar with the remainder of the ongoing series, but I sincerely hope subsequent boxed sets are forthcoming.

Refreshing

Perhaps influenced by heavy hitters in the genre, but still entertaining and interesting. Among the best light fantasy available today.

On of my favorites

The story is so good, and the author doesn’t torture his characters, there is genuine goodness in a lot of the people of his world and that makes a very pleasant and warm setting. There is bloodshed and tragedy but a lot of good things happen, very well balanced and I could not stop listening.

An entertaining Tale. Worth a Listen.

While it may not be some epic in the same league as a lot of popular fantasy authors out there, it was still quite enjoyable for me. I look forward to more from this series. We get to watch a fifteen year old boy learn about the vast world outside the small isolated village he grew up in. While it shows how naïve he can be, it also produces some truly comical moments. All of this while coming to terms with that he is a member of an ancient order to fight an evil god. The action and fight scenes are not over the top or unbelievable for the genre. Over all it is well written and has a decent story. Wasn't so sure about the narrator when It first started, but he grew on me as the book progressed.

Loved it, continuing with the next book

So I really like these books. Very interesting world. Builds out the paladin concept from DnD in a very interesting and plausible way. It's an extremely cohesive world where why the races are the way they are makes sense. The back stories on the characters is also extremely well thought out. Who they are and why they are the way they are makes sense.

My one gripe is a spoiler, and it doesn't detract from the book, it just makes me mind of angry at the supporting characters. It's completely realistic that they could be that way, it just makes me think less of them.

Spoiler alert:
So, I get being firm and strict with the main character when he's in training for his apprenticeship. His master is gruff and somewhat disaffected. I don't get the fact that every other mentor he has treats him like a whipping boy. These people are kind, considerate, thoughtful and compassionate with everyone else, but if Ahren barely puts a toe out of line they are furious with him. I'd get it if he was slow on the uptake. If they'd explain things to him and he still didn't get it so tempers rise. Or if he had a pattern of repeating his mistakes, but he doesn't. So these people who've been alive for hundreds of years expect Ahren to understand things before he's been taught them, and jump down his throat when he gets something wrong the first time he encounters it. Makes me want to slap them. Maybe they are stressed because he's the chosen one and use a different standard for him (unfairly), but it doesn't come across that way.

It's still a great read with tons I enjoyed, and even though this is a theme in the books, it's infrequent enough not to detract much from the overall experience. It's just irksome because the kid has done some pretty impressive things over the course of two years and the first reaction from the people around him is they get angry and tell him he's thick.
