Publisher's summary

Some skills you never lose. Killing is one of them.

Matthew Riker keeps to himself, doesn't cause trouble, and never talks about his past. But after a chance encounter with a woman and a small child on the run, Riker will have to make a choice: use his hard-won skills to protect two innocent victims, or stay in the safety of his quiet life.

What follows is an adrenaline-soaked thrill ride that will take Riker on a cross-country chase, through the seedy underbelly of a New York criminal empire, and into the darkest places of the human heart.

Fans of John Wick, Jack Reacher, and Jason Bourne...get ready to meet Matthew Riker.

Includes a bonus novella from the Matthew Riker series, No Loose Ends.

Jack Winchester meets Macguyver!

I got a kick out of his using of non-weapons as weapons.
His evaluation of situations, how he sets the scenes and beats the bad guys with pots, pans, WD 40, canned goods and fire extinguishers.

I don't really care if it's realistic, I like my heroes as super human crusaders.
Like Jack Winchester, the story is "simple" and fun, and it stays with the main character the majority of the time and doesn't jump around to the other characters story lines. It's not as complex as some of the others in the genre, but sometimes complex isn't what I'm looking for.
This is good entertainment.

I wish they talked more about his past. It's so mysterious that I actually went back to make sure I didn't somehow miss a previous book that explained it all.

Good start

A bit over done with dramatics but excusable as a new launch. Good character development. Interesting prequel snapshot as a follow up. Has potential if sustained.

Frustratingly Stupid at Times

Overall a good story and has potential for a series, but if you're expecting a Rapp, Reacher, Harvath, Andreus, etc, forget it. This guy is pretty stupid the entire first half of the book. Like... Oh I just disarmed 2 bad guys trying to kill me and know there are 4 more bad guys out there, I think I'll just through away their guys even though I don't have one. Then, Oh I almost died again and took took people with me from the next set of bad guys, but once again I'm going to through their guns away. Even the victim he is trying to protect calls him out on his stupidity but never seems to learn from it.

I also get so tired of the yarn where we have a reluctant hero because of a promise he made years ago. In this case the promise was not even to a loved one and the author tries to play up this internal struggle but it just falls flat.

Good read....repetitious though.

Very entertaining...lots of action. Ex Navy Seal goes to location A, gets into an impossible situation and since he is a super, kick a$$ kind of guy...gets away. Goes to location B...repeat. Goes to location C...repeat. Goes to location D. You get the idea. Might want to read the first 2 chapters and the last 2. Narrator was superb! I,m not getting the rest of the series. jda

AMAZING STORY AND NARRATION!

This was sooo good. Every bit of this story was good. I am a fan Matthew Riker!

This book is action packed. Riker is trying to save a 3 year old girl. OH MY does he get the bad guys!

If you like Court Gentry from The Gray Man, Dewey Andreas, Jack Winchester, Jonathan Quinn, James Reece, and Jack Winchester you will love this book!

I am looking forward to the next book in this series and I hope that Jay Snyder narrates it.

The narration is amazing. I am a big fan of Jay Snyder. He does such a good job on all the voices individually, has a nice reading voice and reads with emotion. So good.

Matthew Rider has a new fan

I just loved this first Matthew Riker novel. A frenetic pace with not a dull moment.
A good story, and lots of ambience.
I would put this on a level with Mitch Rapp and Jack Reacher.
Highly recommend.

Move over Jack Reacher

If you are a fan of Jack Reacher or Mitch Rapp, you will love Matthew Riker. The writing is excellent and the story is just action packed the entire way through. And Jay Snyder is a fantastic narrator.

Not for me

Human trafficking is a no for me. I wish authors would mention this so we know what we're buying...
