Sahara sees first flood in half a century

Astonishing footage has emerged of the first floods in the Sahara Desert in half a century.

More than a year’s worth of rain fell in two days in south-east Morocco in September. This footage was captured by drone in early October.

Satellite pictures from Nasa show Lake Iriqui, which has been dry for 50 years, inundated with water.

Houssine Youabeb, an official of Morocco’s meteorology agency said: "It’s been 30 to 50 years since we’ve had this much rain in such a short space of time."

BBC Weather's Ben Rich said: "Climate change is making rainfall patterns around the world more erratic - which may mean intense downpours like this happen more often. However, the Sahara is an extremely dry place and this is unlikely to change overall."
