Russia Flag 2x3 ft. Nyl-Glo Made in USA Annin 199000
Feb 26, 2023
Awesome 'American Made' Russian Flag
This simple yet striking national flag of Russia is a tricolour design with equal fields of white, blue, and red credited to Peter the Great. So it has a long and storied history with all the various chronologies going back centuries in the land of the Rus'. My purchase was one that was "Made in the USA" by the Annin company (FMAA - Flag Manufacturers Association Of America certified). It is their Nyl-Glo version constructed with 100% nylon featured as ultra durable with SolarGuard. It has sewn panels with very vivid colors, and it flies nicely with an intermediate breeze. Holds up well in inclement weather and is slow to fade or wear-and-tear from exposure to the elements.
Don't Tread on Me by 311 (CD, Aug-2005, Volcano 3)
Sep 08, 2023
Vintage 2000s album that still hits!
Produced, engineered, and mixed by Ron Saint Germain bringing his depth of knowledge with analog audio recording and a technical grasp of vintage and modern sound. Mastered by Joe Gastwirt, another stealthy wizard of his craft. Both knob maestros with credits galore add a living touch to this mid 2000s album that renders it timeless and fresh upon each listen. The expression Don't Tread On Me is an an American Revolutionary War motto often placed on the Gadsden flag underneath a coiled rattlesnake ready to strike. But this album's art design looks like it could be the logo for the California Department of Food & Agriculture. However, the title track #1 is a banger and reinforces the iconic call to arms amalgamating the hybrid styles 311 seamlessly blend together. Nick Hexum sings out a warning putting intruders on notice. P-Nut lays down a mellow bassline. SA Martinez offers up verses of spoken-word poetic singing suggesting a kind spirit frustrated in an angry world. Then there's a Caribbean drum break by the amazing Chad Sexton who is the type of percussionist that could play drums for any band of any style; a real All-Star in a group of talented musicians. Track 2 Thank Your Lucky Stars. Upbeat chunky guitar riff. Martinez sings from the heart. Hexum joins with some sweet harmonies. A musical callback to earlier 311 riff-based jams. Track 3 Frolic Room. Opening drum kicks are pure thunder booms. The mix is hitting! Tim Mahoney joins in with light bright staccato picking before flooring the distortion pedal as the singers croon about letting loose and having some fun amidst the craziness. Track 4 Speak Easy. A Wah-Wah guitar riff starts off this jam with some keen drum accents. Faintly in the background some Caribbean steel/pan drums are being played by guest musician Robert Greenridge of the late great Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. A very fitting addition to this album full of beach vibes in between the edgier tunes. Hexum and Martinez are locked in vocally, while P-Nut lays down the slickest low end bassline bringing it all together. Track 5 Solar Flare. Another cool bassline, sounding robotic, starts this hard rocker off followed by Martinez calling out the American war machine propaganda so prevalent then as in now. Hexum adds smooth vocal flourishes in the same context warning against the Military and Media Industrial Complex. Track 6 Waiting. This cut takes us back to the good feels. Kind of a love song, Hexum sings about longing for a sweetheart. The bassline is a straight Wailers/Stir It Up homage, while the guitar solo recalls Jerry Garcia's duck-quack envelope filter tone and trilled playing. Martinez adds a lyrical spoken/sung verse perfectly harmonizing with Hexum. Chad Sexton's reggae drumbeat is solid throughout. Track 7 Long For The Flowers. A crunchy guitar riff kicks this off joined by Martinez singing a contemplative verse followed by Hexum with a chorus addressing relationships as time passes. Tim Mahoney offers spright quirky scale runs, harmonic augmentations, and a solid rock-guitar solo. Track 8 Getting Through To Her. This is really a great mellow callback to the early sound system days of the band. The riff is a trademark dancehall groove, but the rhythm section plays it straight. The guitar line and chords are almost ballad-like. This tune merges the themes of the album together; passionate calls with a dose of clarity about reality. Track 9 Whiskey and Wine. A slow opening with few sparse clean guitar chords. Harmonies come in with Hexum and Martinez singing a plea and confession. Bright acoustic guitar picking comes through during the breaks while Hexum adds a spoken-word verse of his own reminding us to raise a glass once in awhile. Track 10 It's Getting OK Now. Fast, upbeat, crunchy guitars. Punk rock drumbeat. Martinez powerfully sings about facing the future with calm acceptance. P-Nut holds down the bottom with some nice follows from the guitars. Pure musical energy. Track 11 There's Always An Excuse. Tim Mahoney begins the last track with a slow string-by-string picked chord that manages to blend brightness and a hint of dissonance together with the open-string ringing out at the end of the riff. Hexum sings with the chorus about people having excuses for whatever issue that is probably not being dealt with. Then the groove kicks up slightly with Martinez adding a fitting verse. A rocking section with some heavy guitars add a break before the song goes totally into the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's territory for a brief musical moment where it almost sounds like piano keys are playing along before kicking back into the main theme again. Then Mahoney unleashes a solo that takes us to the ending chorus rocked out. This album is a great musical escape and is especially awesome to play at the beach!
