Southern Ground Hornbill COMEBACK
The Mabula Ground Hornbill Project was founded in 1999 and since its establishment has grown from a tiny project simply trying to learn how to reintroduce a complex, long-lived species like a ground hornbill, to becoming the national conservation lead agency. This was possible through strong collaborations over the years and allows the project to meet its mandate of first slowing and then reversing the decline of the southern ground hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri).
This is done in a multi-faceted, , and . Ultimately the goal is to down-list the species from Endangered to Least Concern, and to share the conservation lessons and tools with neighbouring states that are also at risk of losing their southern ground hornbill populations.
