Nightmare before Christmas

It was December 2016 on a quiet residential street. Houses were twinkling with Christmas lights and decorations.

For one inhabitant of Cactus Flower Drive, Fort Worth, Texas, it must have seemed a dream come true.

Because for Shanna Riddle Vandewege, it was her first Christmas as a mum.

Three months earlier, Shanna, 36, had given birth to her son Diederik Jonas, known as DJ.

The tot had brought Shanna joy following years of heartache.

She had previously suffered a succession of devastating miscarriages.

DJ was her longed-for child, here at last.

Shanna and her husband Craig, who'd been married for two years after meeting at church, had recently moved to Fort Worth from Colorado, 800 miles away.
