What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a captivating and original mystery horror story. The twists and turns keep readers hooked until the end, and the atmosphere and setting create a creepy and engrossing experience. The narrator does an amazing job bringing the characters to life. While some reviewers felt that the book could have benefited from better editing and pacing, overall, readers highly recommend this book for its unique premise, great characters, and suspenseful plot. It's a must-read for fans of Stephen King and Ania Ahlborn.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Lots of suspenseful turns with legends coming true in a small town
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Some fine gore, and a engaging cast of characters. But ultimately feels overcrowded and meandering.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great writing amazing storytelling I love this author..
read this!! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A captivating read I didn’t want to put down. One of the best I can remember.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kinda messy throughout but pulls together towards the end not bad
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A fun horror romp that felt very much like King, minus the great character building. It pushed the limits of credulity, but it certainly isn't the worst horror novel I've read. It had a good pace that kept my interest. The premise was a little bit like a B-movie, and the "twist" was incredibly obvious (they even mention it themselves early on), but I still recommend it.
If I had to compare it to a movie as far as quality, I would say it is somewhat like Harbinger Down or The Void. The effects aren't great, the acting is a bit forced, and you certainly aren't scared by it, but you end it saying, "Yeah, not bad." - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5WOW. Just wow. Such a great read. Should really be turned into a show. I went into thinking I’ll just enjoy another run of the mill crime murder story but it’s so much more than that. The supernatural element and the way everything tied together was just ..wow.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Really enjoyed this. Narration was good. Didn't love the way the end wrapped things up so qui
ckly, though. Also didn't love the way the plot went towards the end, and it was pretty predictable, but it was good. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was soooo good and creepy! Makes nightmares ever scarier!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this book from start to finish! Will there be a sequel?!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5OK!! Now this is a horror story. The narrator is amazing and had me listening every chance I got so I finished this one quickly.
Absolutely LOVE the atmosphere, the setting and the story. Perfect one for Spooktober. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing book. I was confident I knew where the book was going and I had shelved it a couple of times. I was so wrong, after finishing the book I wish I could read it again.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Riveting! Lots of twists that will keep you guessing until the end!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A very interesting premise, just not fleshed out to it's full potential, says this non-writer. An engaging listen nonetheless
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5New take on old themes and kept me hooked all the way.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is great! I devoured this book & will read anything else he's got! This one grabbed me & didn't let go. It's rare that I find something that terrifies me, but I had several moments I had to pause & breathe & reset. LOVED THIS! Definitely going on my re-read list!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this mystery horror story!! Kudos to both the author and narrator! For the narrator(s) was excellent as well. I can definitely say that I will never view nightmares the same way again lol! The premise of this book is quite original and creative to me! Very entertaining all the way through despite the book not taking quite the horror feel I was expecting. To me it felt a little bit more on the side of mystery and intrigue than scary horror. Though there were quite a lot of “mares!!!” I ate this book up pretty fast! So I definitely recommend it especially if you’re in the mood for something a little more original. Happy Reading or Listening!!

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5There's a lot I liked about this book - the story, the characters, the atmosphere - but it was severally disadvantaged by poor editing. It needed to lose about ten chapters worth of writing to prevent it from feeling drawn out and plodding.
Dialogue scenes felt as though they were written for a screenplay more than a novel. Conversations were often long when they needed to be concise, repeated frequently, and included unnecessary minutiae.
There were sub-plots that felt pointless and unnecessarily padded out the already overstuffed story.
By the time anything was revealed in the story, it was already really obvious or felt completely pointless or irrelevant.
I just couldn't keep my enjoyment or interest up with how slow things developed so I ended up speed reading through the last twenty chapters.
It's a shame because the actual premise of the story is really good.
Also, Markert falls for the "white standard" trope, only describing the skintone and race of non-white characters.6 people found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was ok, overly complicated. More spooky less complication. ?
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5FANTASTIC!!
I've been looking for a thriller to get me back into the groove, and after several tik tok recommendations which all failed miserably, I randomly found this one on this app. I had not heard anyone talk about it, nor did I read any of the reviews. I literally just clicked "listen now" out of frustration. 12 hrs later (non stop)...... It's definitely a book to go in blind but I will say it gives Jeepers Creepers, The Shinning with a splash of Unbreakable (m.knight s) vibes.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Go in blind. I knew nothing and it was quite a path it took me down.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Incredible storyline with incredible narration. A great combination of creepy, suspense, and horror...all done in just the right proportions. The characters were developed believable, with believable dialogs, you had great empathy for them or great hate depending on the moment. Nice plot twists, I was sad for it to end...possible set up for a sequel...fingers crossed.
