About this audiobook

A charming, warmhearted novel from the author of the New York Times bestseller A Man Called Ove.

Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy—as in standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother’s instructions lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry is told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as Fredrik Backman’s bestselling debut novel, A Man Called Ove. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different.

This is the most heart felt, real life interpretation mixed with a child's fairy tale point of view. I laughed and I most definitely cried like I haven't in forever. Elsa captivated my heart and soul. She made me feel her every hurt, frustrated, anger and sorrow moment. You go on an extraordinary journey that will leave you looking at the world in a a new way.

I loved this as much as I loved A Man Called Ove, maybe more at times! Fairy tales, Harry Potter references, comedy, mischief, tears, friendships... it really had it all. I don't know what else to say other than if you're on the fence about reading this, don't be. You want to read it.

Another quirky book by Backman. Strange unique characters that over time engage you the reader, and grow in depth to where you understand those parts of their character that seem so strange at the beginning. This story follows Elsa and her grandmother. You won't counter several characters in a fairyland that is a representation of Elsa's real life. Well worth the journey.
I see in this book the authors development that will come to fruition in the Beartown books.

A different almost 8 year old girl's grandmother dies and she spends the next few days on a treasure hunt getting to know those who live in the house around her, making friends along the way. Backman explores what it means to lose loved ones, and how everyone around has their own past and stories that you'd never suspect without asking. Backman once again demonstrates his ability to write flawed, human characters into his stories.

Favorite Quotes behind spoiler tag: "People who think slowly always accuse quick thinkers of concentration problems, idiots can't understand that non-idiots are done with a thought and already moving onto the next before they have."

"When mom and dad did a cleaning, mom wrote a minute by minute breakdown of the cleaning schedule, and then dad would get sort of caught up with descaling the coffee percolator for two and a half hours"

"When a child is born in Miamus, all the families friends come to the cot and tell stories and pull faces and dance and sing and make jokes and the first one to make the child laugh becomes the Laugher. They are personally responsible for making it happen as often and as loudly and in as many situations as possible. Particularly those that cause embarrassment to the parents."

Incredible. Fredrik Backman has managed to do it again. This book is definitely one of the best ones I have ever read. It is full of sorrow, grief, happiness, laughter, anger and so many others. This book manages to show what it is like losing someone so dear to you. From the eyes of a little girl you get to feel the anger, hatred and sadness that she is feeling whilst watching her mother deal with loss and grief. You get to witness her path to forgiveness and see her start to love and move on. This book had me laughing, sobbing, and screaming and yelling. I highly recommend.

This was, by far, one of the most difficult books for me to get through. You can tell that it took me about 6 weeks. Im not sure what the problem was. Maybe it was the names of the Lands, maybe it was because I just couldnt grasp the real story....not sure.....

"'There's someone in my school who has many of boyfriends,'...
    "He's a boy," Elsa corrects.'"

    Exit time @ 38%.

Cute and winsome story, though. Sweet story of a girl and her grandma, her hero. After her grandmother dies, Elsa is unraveling all the life lessons she unknowingly learned through grandma's fairy tale stories.

I did get the sense every so often, however, that some ideas (which were probably fabulous) were lost in translation.

I loved this book, but if it's possible, I loved the narration *even more*. This is the best job narrating I've ever heard! I can't recommend it enough. You'll laugh (a lot), but you'll cry some too.

I had hesitated to read this book because even though I loved Ove in a man called Ove. It took me a while to finish it. This book, however, got me hooked on the first paragraph! So many moments of laughing out loud and few moments of tears. And a beautiful tale of a Young Girl on a quest from her late Grandmother that introduces her more people who love her. I cant recommend this book highly enough! I absolutely loved it!

The story is touching and funny at the same time. kudos to the narrator, for bringing in so much color in her narration with variation in voices and expressions. Eleven hours very well spent. Another lovely writing by the author after A man called Ove.

Too slow and too long of a story. Not what I had expected from Backman after the Beartown series or Ove or Anxious People.

I tried to get into it.I read about half way through and then had to admit I just wasn't enjoying it. I found it too depressing and dark to continue. I'm sure eventually there was a wonderful ending. I just wasn't willing to torture myself getting there. Frederick is a great writer...this just didn't appeal to me

OK so I have a love-hate relationship with these books by this author. They are tedious at times with some annoying characters but I also end up crying with the poignancy he creates.

This is truly a gem. So thoughtfully told through the eyes of 'an almost eight year old'. I really enjoyed this book. Told through the eyes of Elsa. She and Granny are very close and when Granny dies, Elsa is devastated. Granny has left her letter to deliver which are Granny telling that person she is sorry. Slowly Elsa learns things about Granny, her family and everyone who lives in the house. This is beautifully written and well worth the read.
