Most of the time he travelled on a budget. Since he was travelling to see the sights - not sleep in a bed - he always looked for budget accommodations. Remarkably, he could readily find places that cost a quarter of what others were paying. It just took some effort.
In Turkey he stayed in a hotel where the plumbing always leaked - but the price was rock bottom. (The plumbing always leaks in Turkey.) In Australia he slept in the "loft" of a Volkswagen Westphalia during a 3,000 km cross-country tour. In Canada and New Zealand he slept in hostels with 6 to a room. In the Philippines, he slept in a nipa hut some friends gave him. In Greece, he negotiated the price of a cheap room down by 50% - at 2 in the morning and nowhere else to go! In Tahiti he slept on the Faaa Airport veranda. In London he took a decent room after riding to the end of the subway line and walking another kilometer. In Bali he found a delightful B&B for $11 a night - and spent three weeks there. After years of travelling at home and abroad, finding budget places became part of the adventure and a natural way to explore the country.view less
