He attended Muskingum ...view moreJoseph Sprague Maxwell was born in Beaver Falls, PA on May 5, l891. He grew up in Chester, West Virginia and East Liverpool, Ohio, graduating from East Liverpool High School. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio and graduated in 1912. He then went to Assuit, Egypt, under the auspices of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, to teach in a college there. After one year he returned to the US, where he attended and graduated from Pittsburgh Medical School. In 1919 he married Mary Frances McDougall from Chariton, Iowa. Together they went as missionaries to the Anglo Egyptian Sudan, as it was called then. This included a six month stay in London to study tropical medicine. In 1929 he and his family transferred to Ethiopia, where they remained until 1933, when they returned to the US. After a year of training in opthalmology in Philadelphia, and two years working in Kentucky, Dr. Maxwell settled in Fairmont, West Virginia, where he set up his private practice in 1936. He retired in 1948, moved to Florida, and remained in Kissimmee, Florida, until his death in 1985. He had four children.view less
