Smith reentered the U.S. Army as a chaplain 20 years after the story’s period, serving in New Jersey and Germany. He retired from the Vermont Army National Guard in 2003, and currently lives with his wife, Leigh, in St. Albans, Vermont, where he continues contact with many veterans who fought an unpopular war, and who still bear scars from it.view less
