She was inspired by Phillis Wheatley, Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Gwendolyn Brooks and the writers, musicians, and artists of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920's. Lula published her first poem as a child. She completed her education at St. Mary's University and became a high school English teacher.view less
