      Introduction

      I first started thinking about becoming a massage therapist many years ago when my son was small. I had a growing interest in Complimentary Therapies and I started reading lots of books and magazines on the subject. I would walk to work everyday and dream of the day that I could leave the rat race behind and run my own business. I could spend more time with my son, work more flexible hours and at the same time I could help people to feel better, to feel less stressed.

      I did a couple of home study courses but that wasn't enough. I did more research and finally found out that the best course to start with was an ITEC qualification in Holistic Massage.

      I passed in July 2003 and in the same year I was told that I would be made redundant. Perfect I thought. It will give me the opportunity to start my massage business. But it wasn't as simple as that. Once I was qualified I had absolutely no idea how to start. Where do you find clients? Where can you work? How much do you charge? How do you market yourself?

      It took me a long time to find out the answers to these questions. The friends, family and colleagues that were happy to be my guinea pig while I was studying were not so keen once I had passed and wanted to be paid for my services.

      You need to establish a good reputation and market yourself properly. It’s no good being a really good massage therapist doing everything that you have been taught exceptionally well if nobody knows about you. I wasted a lot of time and money on useless marketing projects. You need to know where to advertise to get the most interest. It’s pointless advertising to people who simply aren't interested.

      This book takes you right from the very beginning with details of the qualifications that you will need in order to practice and charge for your service, the equipment you will need and details of insurance. It will go through the cost of starting your own business. I don't go into details of buying a practice or running a salon, there are plenty of other books to cover that subject. I will be concentrating on how to start a massage business working for your self either from home or in a sports centre, spa or salon.

      I look at how to get funding for your business and writing a business plan, right the way through to advantages and disadvantages of working at home or being mobile, marketing, establishing a brand, different types of massage and further study.

      Massage is a very rewarding career to start. It is flexible, you can be responsible for the hours you work and it is easy to fit around commitments that you already have. Its easy to have a break and pick up again later and with hard work and a little know how it is possible to have a full appointment book with plenty of regular clients.

      Whatever your reason for becoming a Massage Therapist I really hope that this book will help you to successfully start your Holistic Massage Business.

There are so many massage courses out there, how do you know which one will enable you to practice as a massage therapist and charge for your service?
