He’s has a variety of jobs, working as a substitute teacher, the graveyard shift dishwasher at a haunted Denny’s, lab research monkey and teaching assistant at a second tier college. Currently, he works as an automation consultant for a chemical company on the Northeast side of SAtown (which isn’t as Hellish as it sounds).       Chapter 1

      I came to Art’s to get away from everything, but I soon found out some things could not be avoided. Nights had gotten to be too much for me. Insomnia hit my doorstop like an old friend I could no longer avoid, and he decided to stick around for a while.

      There were a few spots in my neighborhood that offered entertainment all night every night, but they were fast becoming a younger man’s market. This was 1981, and that scene was all about loud music, fast drugs and gay, grand times. Cocaine was the powder of choice, supplanting the ubiquitous, soporific weed; it offered whole nightlong trips in realms of sensual wonder, or so I’d heard. I didn’t taste those nights, not me. A young man’s meat market: devil dust and sex on the hoof, all a fellow had to do was point to get some of either.

      Art’s was an all-night diner, and while two o’clock bar shut downs brought more than a few jackass jerk offs fresh from a night’s debauch, their eyes rimmed red and their adrenaline running hot, that type did not stick around terribly long. They were all ensconced in the moment. It was a little too antsy for such a sedate scene.

      Which made it perfect for me. Art stayed open all night, and the gals running tables did not mind a fellow sitting in the booth through the long hours before dawn so long as he did not cause terrible much trouble. Worst I did was flirt a little, just to remember how it felt. They played along with me because I succeeded on two counts: I did not cut anything resembling a creepy character, and I did not register on their radar as even a possibility.

      Like I said: a young man’s game.

      So there I was, as the analog clock over the polished chrome stools and counter seats approached the magic hour of scurrying, the hour all those liquor joints shut their doors. I dipped a grilled cheese into a cup of chicken broth when the door hissed open, let in the clamor of late night trolling traffic, and then clacked shut. I glanced up to see what sort of devil the night had brought in.

      Not a devil at all. When I glanced up from my soup and sandwich, I found a dark haired and voluptuous angel standing just inside the greasy spoon’s door. She was so gorgeous, my breath caught in my throat. Twenty-one if she was a day. A dark complexion, hips and breasts that made alluring curves under a tight fitting, blue silk Chinese dress, a pair of strong legs wrapped in tight hosiery and shiny boots, and those eyes . . . They were exotic: one blue as a sapphire, the other green as an envious heart.

      If I had been thirty-five instead of fifteen years past it, then I would have approached her. As it was, I decided I occupied the wrong side of the age border. Older and wiser, maybe. I decided to savor the beauty, appreciate her like a rose someone else was fated to pluck.

      Imagine my surprise when she caught my gaze. She held me for almost three seconds before I realized her stride was carrying her toward my booth. She moved slowly, her gait strong and steady. Her boot heels clicked across the floor like a metronome. The feathered hair around her girlish face and amazing eyes bouncing just a bit with each step, a matching rhythm to the bosom beneath the silk. One of her hands traced the luscious curve of her hip before she slid onto the vinyl cushion across from me.

      Well, hello, I said, unable to look away from her eyes, now. Enchanted, I was. Ensorcelled. Can I get you a soup-sammich special?

      Her lips did not rise into a smile when she whispered I need your help.

      She did not look the type to ask for a handout. Hell, she looked like she ought to have men giving their back teeth to be as close to her as I was. I don't under—
