A long, long time ago; legends and folk tales were used by people as a way of captivating the imagination of children and adults alike. Elders would use stories in order to impart the ways of the community, wisdom and morals to the rest and thereby also fostering a strong community spirit. I have always been fascinated by mythology and being born in Kenya, the connection to Africa has also been strong. Africa is a melting pot of thousands of different communities with their own specific cultures, traditions and stories! However most of these stories were never written and over time communities have started to lose their stories. I came to Cape Town, South Africa on a corporate secondment and the existence of so many different tribes just within South Africa intrigued me. I realised that a lot of the culture and traditions that used to be in existence several years ago, had gradually diminished over time. This project was borne as a result; with the aim of preserving the stories, legends and folk tales of some of the South African cultures through children. It is hoped that these books will help the youth of South Africa to re-connect with their cultures as well as to raise awareness and tolerance of others. Through sales of this book, I hope to raise funding in order to donate printed books to needy children in less privileged schools. Some of these stories have been collected through interacting with the local communities and others through research. Due to the lack of historic documented records as well as evolution and adaptation of some of the stories over time; it is difficult to guarantee the originality and uniqueness of the stories. The stories gathered have been further adapted to make them more captivating for today's children.

Chapter 1
Mama Ostrich receives a pleasant surprise
The sun rose slowly, spreading her golden rays across the green savannah plains and bathing everything in shades of pink and orange.
One by one, the birds and animals woke up, eager to stretch underneath the warmth of the new sun. The rising sun was greeted by a melodious symphony of bird songs and animal sounds.
tmp_119bd7b52af7b47e59ee89902a0357ba_LmZQts_html_m608af9d8.jpgGiraffe raised her long and spotty neck as high as she could, reaching out to greet the sun. Jambo, hello sun!
called out Giraffe as she swayed, twisting her long and elegant neck gracefully between the rays of the sun.
Elephant raised his long and wrinkled trunk as high as he could, reaching out to greet the sun. Jambo, hello sun!
trumpeted Elephant as he slowly trundled across the savannah plains in search of some juicy bananas for his breakfast.
Cheetah curved herself and stretched out her long and slender legs. Jambo, hello sun!
purred Cheetah and with that she shot off, gracing the savannah with her long and graceful strides.
Hare hopped out of his burrow and wiggled his nose at the sun. He jumped as high as he could. Jambo, hello sun!
called out Hare as he hopped and bounded across the savannah plains.
Mama Ostrich fluffed and spread out her beautiful feathers as far apart as she could, reaching out to greet the sun. Jambo, hello sun!
called out Mama Ostrich.
She then bent down to take a closer look at her clutch of four large and creamy eggs. Jambo, hello my little ones!
Mama Ostrich exclaimed as she nuzzled each one of the eggs.
She had waited many, many days for her children to be born and she hoped that today was the day she would finally get to see her chicks.
The sun rose higher and higher. The rays of the sun now reached out and gently caressed the tops of the eggs, when Mama Ostrich heard a peculiar sound.
Click, clack.
Click, clack!
What was that?
wondered Mama Ostrich and she bent to take a closer look at her eggs.
Click, clack.
Click, clack!
There it went again! Mama Ostrich lowered her head even more until her big round eyes were almost level with the eggs.
