The Super Seven – Book 4

Dedicated to a beautifully talented writer and encouraging friend, Erin.
Erin died while I was writing this book. You’ll notice that the first two chapters are from a different point of view than the rest of the story. I wrote those two chapters before she died. Everything I wrote on that story after her death was no good. My grief was so permanently linked to the story that I could never finish it, though I tried and tried. Finally, after two years, I decided to delete everything after Chapter 2 and write a different story. The other story is gone forever.
But Erin’s not. I know I’ll see her again. In the place where there is no darkness, we can sit by the river of life, writing poetry, and we’ll never grow old.
Chapter 1 – Slum City
Slum City’s very picturesque this time of year, don’t you think?
asked Michael. Chrissy couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled up in a giggle. He beamed back at her, his blue eyes sparkling and his red hair reflecting the light of the sun.
Less than a year ago, thirteen-year-olds, Chrissy and Michael were in school together. But now they were in Slum City. Rubbish blew around in the streets like tumbleweed, against the backdrop of rundown apartment complexes. Chrissy squinted her brown eyes against a gust that flung grit from the street up into her face. Her long brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail.
Slum City was inhabited by the gifted. Many who lived there were criminals. Not even the Black Empire or the government could penetrate their urban lair. But Chrissy was an Aylward, one able to use the abilities of any gifted within a several mile radius. Michael and Chrissy walked hand-in-hand as she cloaked them both. Most people wouldn’t be able to see them. That was important. It was a dangerous neighborhood. And they were actually on a serious mission. But sometimes it was nice to pretend that they were just normal kids having fun.
So, hear anything yet?
asked Michael.
And by hear, he meant sense. They were searching for strongly gifted youth who would want to choose the good side. Chrissy and Michael now worked for the Agency, the powerful, semi-secret organization that was trying to make Largos a better world. They believed the gifted would play an important role in this new future.
Nope. Nothing but rotten for miles around,
said Chrissy.
Let’s keep going then. We don’t want to have to return to headquarters empty-handed for the fifth day in a row.
Chrissy nodded. Michael had such strong determination. And he wasn’t even gifted.
The communication device on her belt chirruped. She pulled it to her ear.
Hello?
Chrissy, it’s Dad. We have a situation. Get back to Agency headquarters right away.
Ok, will do,
said Chrissy. She clicked off the device and replaced it in the holster on her belt. It was Dad. There’s something going on. We have to get back to headquarters.
Uh oh,
said Michael, looking past her.
Chrissy had dropped her invisibility cloak while she
