The Mall of Eternity - Jason Krumbine

    CHAPTER ONE

The man called Smith watched the shark feeding frenzy with an imperceptible sense of disinterest. He had no first name and no real last name. He was simply called Smith. Although, these days, some people had taken to adding an Agent in front of it. He was a burly man with wide shoulders and a crooked nose. His hair was cut so short it was hardly even there and when he spoke, his voice grated like sandpaper, although nobody ever was brave enough to tell him that.

Smith was a man, for all intents and purposes, that did not exist. He lived outside the law, outside of society and completely off the grid. No computer in the world had his face, his fingerprints, his blood or his DNA. His real name was known by no one, not even Smith himself. He had forgotten it long ago. To the world at large, Smith simply did not exist. Which was just how he liked it. He came and went as he pleased. He had a reputation for acquiring things for other men, for a price. And that price was always high. Smith liked his work and he liked his life. It was simple and perfect, just like he had designed it.

Now, though, things weren't as simple. His freelance lifestyle had come to an abrupt end thanks to the Castle sisters and Smith found himself in the one position he swore he'd never be in again: employed by somebody else.

He was being paid handsomely, but that didn't shake the feeling of indentured servitude he felt now. And he hated that feeling.

And he hated the Castle sisters even more.

His eyes focused in and out on the sharks as they tore apart their prey, but he didn't pay the beasts any real attention. It was merely something for his eyes to exercise on while his mind focused on other matters.

    Those stupid, stupid Castle sisters.

There was a sharp pain in his hands. Smith looked down and realized that he had been clenching his fists so tightly that his nails had dug into his skin. He forced his fingers to relax.

The number of people who had beaten him, who had thwarted him, who had stopped him from achieving his goals in life, was ridiculously small. Smith was a smart and able man. There weren't many who were his equal. Just two: Faith and Summer Castle. And they were children.

I hate kids, Smith grumbled, watching the sharks race after an escapee.

Smith wasn't a man prone to exaggeration, but he was pretty sure his life, as he knew it, was over.

He was going to be stuck here with the Tancredi Group until the day he died.

All because of those stupid Castle sisters.

    Enjoying the view?

Smith stiffened at the sound of the voice. His lips automatically started to curl back in a snarl, but he fought the instinct. Smith remained silent, not bothering to respond to the newcomer.

Agent Dark stepped up alongside Smith and they watched the feeding frenzy in silence for a few minutes. Dark was a tall, gangly man with pale skin and a hairless body. He dressed in black and carried himself with the presence of a powerful man.

Please, Mr. Smith, Dark said. Let's not be childish.

    Smith growled in response.

Yes, Dark nodded. About that. You're going to have to stop doing it. We don't employ animals here at the Tancredi Group.

Feel free to fire me, Smith replied.

Oh, you wouldn't want that, Dark said. We don't offer much by way of a severance package. He nodded at the feeding frenzy as though to punctuate his point.

Smith stepped forward and placed a hand against the ten-inch thick glass. On the other side was the Atlantic Ocean. The Tancredi base they were currently in was approximately five miles under water. It was, by far, the best view Smith had ever had of a shark feeding frenzy like this.

    Feeling nostalgic? Dark asked.

    Something like that, Smith replied.

You shouldn't, Dark said. The past is past. You should learn from it, not yearn to return to it.

If this is going to turn into one of those teachable moments you like to blather on about, Smith said. I swear, I'll launch myself out the first airlock I find.

Dark smiled. Smith watched his reflection in the glass and his mood soured further.

I'm not fond of games, Smith said.

What a coincidence, Dark replied. Neither am I.

    Could have fooled me.

You need to stop looking at the short term, Mr. Smith, Dark said. And start examining the bigger picture.

I was never much of a 'big picture' kind of guy.

It's never too late to change.

You know, I'm pretty sure that when you coerced me into this gig, Smith said. I was promised some revenge.

Big picture, Mr. Smith, Dark repeated. Big picture.

    I hate you, Smith grumbled.

And, in time, that hate will grow into a grudging respect, Dark smiled warmly. Or, as warmly as a cold-blooded man such as he could.

I'll kill you before that happens.

    Of course you won't.

You must have a lot of faith that your men are loyal enough to protect you.

Not at all, Dark replied. When you joined the Tancredi Group you were implanted with a chip. We don't tolerate treason here, Mr. Smith. You make one move against me or the Group and, well, Dark looked back at the feeding frenzy rather than finishing the sentence. He let the threat hang there in the air, allowing Smith to connect the dots on his own.

Smith gaped at Agent Dark. The pale man smiled again, watching Smith’s reflection in the glass.

Don't worry, he said. I don't believe you really have it in you, anyway. It might take you some time, but I think you'll come around to our way of thinking.

I can't tell if you’re joking about any of this, Smith said.

Oh, Mr. Smith, Dark assured him. I never joke about invasive surgery and treason. He patted the larger man on the shoulder reassuringly. Tell me, Mr. Smith, what is the Hoeksema Corporation?

Smith blinked and shook his head at the abrupt change in topic. Dark just stood there, waiting
