Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow in 1821. Considered to be one of the greatest Russian writers, he made an impact with his metaphysical reflections and his patriotic commitment.
His best-known works were published in Europe during a period of exile owing to his joining progressive Russian groups. Crime and Punishment (1866) and The Idiot (1868) thus signalled the start of the author’s ‘mature phase’. Dostoyevsky was praised when he returned to Russia in 1871. His last novel, The Brothers Karamazov (1880), was released several months before his death in St Petersburg in 1881.
