She found him begging on a street corner a block away.

‘Remember me?’ she asked.

‘Who are you?’

‘I asked you about the restaurant owner. You said you knew Lucy.’

‘Who are you?’ he asked again.

She pulled her mobile from her pocket and showed him the Lucy’s picture. He seemed saddened.

‘Do you know what happened to her?’

He was silent.

‘Do you know what happened to this lady? Did you see her leave and get into a car?’

‘Who are you?’ he asked again, and she wondered if he was a bit looney or he was just being cautious.

‘I’m a detective. I’m looking for this lady. Her parents are very worried about her. If you can help me that would be great.’ She put the phone closer, so he could take a good look at her face.

‘Do you know her?’ she kept her voice calm. She would be as patient as she could be. That was the only way she could get answers.

‘She’s really pretty.’

‘Yes, she is. Did you see her at all?’

‘She gives me coffee, but not anymore.’

She sucked in a deep breath. They were going in circles. Did he even know who he was?

‘Have you seen her?’

He was silent, then looked out into the street. She moved towards him and looked into his eyes. He had a vacant look. ‘Sir.’ She changed the picture to Noah’s. ‘Do you know this man?’

He didn’t move.

‘Sir?’

This time he tilted his head to the side and looked. ‘Bad man,’ he said and looked away.

‘Sir. Do you know him?’ She was onto something.

‘Bad man. Very bad man.’

‘Why do you say that?’ he looked around him, crouched, picked up his rucksack and sleeping bag. He started to walk away.

‘Sir.’ She rushed after him.

‘Who are you?’ he said once again.

    Chapter One

Skylar opened her eyes and turned to find her husband still fast asleep. She smiled and felt all warm inside. It had finally happened. He had finally come to his senses and wanted their baby like she wanted it. Skylar thought that this day would never come. That she would have to make the hardest decision of her life to divorce him and go on with her life. But that didn’t have to happen. He wanted her and their baby. She pushed up onto her elbow and watched him a moment. His hair disheveled, and stubble had begun to grow making him look sexier. Skylar could never get over how gorgeous the man was. It was hard not to fall for his touch, or his smile or anything he did that made her weak for him. He had the charm and he knew it.

His eyes flicked a moment, and then opened slowly.

    ‘Hey,’ he whispered.

‘Hey.’ She moved towards him and gave him a kiss.

‘Have you been watching me?’ he asked.

    ‘Yep. You know me.’

‘Yes. You do that when you’re happy with me.’

    ‘I do, don’t I?’

‘Yep.’ He brushed her nose with the back of his index. ‘I love it when you’re happy. I’m sorry I put you through this.’

‘Don’t be. You were stressed. It was a shock for both of us.’

‘Yes, it was, but I could’ve been a bit more supportive.’

He could’ve been, but she had long pushed that to the back of her mind. All she cared about was the present moment and how good it felt.

‘What time is it?’ he asked.

‘Time for me to get up really, but I was thinking of leaving a little late. I want to spend the morning with you. We haven’t done that in ages.’

‘No, we haven’t. That would be nice. Why don’t you go and have a shower?’ He kissed her lips teasingly. ‘And I’ll go downstairs and makes us an awesome breakfast. I haven’t done that in ages either.’

‘Hmmm, that sounds wonderful. I don’t know when was the last time I had a decent breakfast.’

‘And you should. Our baby needs to be nourished.’

She smiled. He sounded so genuine about it and it made her feel proud of him. It wasn’t easy to accept something you didn’t want.

‘You’re right and now that my appetite has returned, I could do with eating something nutritious.’

‘Leave that to me, your chef.’

‘I will.’ She kissed him again.

‘But first.’ He pulled her closer and searched her eyes. ‘First I want to have a little taste of this.’ He kissed her neck. ‘And this.’ He moved down to her shoulder and towards her nipples.’

‘Noah...’ she giggled. ‘You are naughty boy.’

‘You know me so well.’ He began to caress her body like he had done the night before. It was his way of making it up to her and she loved every moment of it.

Skylar’s tummy rumbled as the smell of the food drifted towards her as she headed downstairs. She had rung Claire to tell her that she was running late and to postpone her meeting to an hour later. It had come as a shock to her assistant because Skylar had never come into the office late. It worried her a little because this was unusual behaviour, but Skylar reassured her that everything was fine, and she just needed a lie in.

‘Mmmm it smells divine,’ she said walking into the kitchen.

The table had been set, there was brown and white bread in the center of the table. Fruit and yogurt was next to the bread.

‘I decided to make a full English breakfast. There’s also salmon if you wish.’

‘That’s lovely hon, thank you for doing this.’

‘Anything for my queen.’ He kissed her cheek as he had set the plate down. It had eggs, sausages, bacon, fried tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans. He placed another side plate with smoked salmon that was stuffed with cream cheese.

‘I’m going to get fat.’ She began to eat.

‘Don’t worry about that. You’ve got our little one to think about.’

    ‘I know.’

He sat with her. They began to chat like they had when they were still newlyweds. They had so much to talk about then and it made them feel like they were bonding all over again. He told his silly jokes that she found funny, not because they were funny, but because he thought they were.

‘You love my jokes. I know you do.’ He teased.

‘Course I do. That’s why I find them so funny.’ She teased back.

It was back and forth like that for the entire breakfast, but even though she would’ve loved to keep it going, she had to get going to the office.

‘This was so lovely.’ She took his hand from across the table into hers. ‘I haven’t felt this good in a while. Let’s promise to never fight like we did. I hate it.’

‘I promise.’ He smiled. ‘I missed this too.’
