But then the bees start disappearing, and Ella begins to see a shadowy figure following her out of the corner of her eye. Then late one night, while disobeying Mother’s orders to stay home, Ella finds herself caught in a dance with the fey; one from which she may not be able to escape.

Chapter One
The fox sniffed at the ground. It raised its head, eyes closed in deep concentration.
The fox began to change, russet coat fading to white, camouflaging against the snow.
Too late.
Somewhere above, a branch snapped. The fox startled. Something heavy pressed her into the ground, sharp edge of a blade held to her throat. Fingers twisted gently into her fur, holding her in place.
It’s becoming all too easy to kill you,
a voice whispered in her ear. He released her, grinning wildly as she opened her wide green eyes and stared at him.
She sat, tucking her bushy tail beneath her as she raised one eyebrow. She blurred as she began to change shape again.
So I see.
Somewhere else, in a place lost to the mists of legend and time, an old man sat weeping beneath a bower of thorny brambles. Another season gone, and still the briar showed no signs of bud.

Let’s get back before Mother realises I’m gone.
I bit my lip, brow creasing. Mother didn’t know about Kigu. I preferred to keep it that way, although the scaly rascal did a good job of making life very difficult for me. There were times I almost wished I’d never pulled him out of the stream, bedraggled and frozen. It had taken two days for him to unfurl his wings properly, and he couldn’t light a spark for a week.
Still, he was all the company I had. Except for Mother.
I ran lightly through the woods that bordered the edges of our house. Sneaking through the rusty gate into the overgrown garden, I stole along the path and let myself in the back door.
Once inside, I checked to see if
