DEDICATION

This book is whole heartedly dedicated to all my mentors and guides. Many of them were very different from me and I had differences with them but they always put me in challenging situations and didn’t help me till I really needed any help. This was very effective because that helped me to learn and take new experiences. The knowledge stayed with me and I could present it to you now. I will consider myself lucky if I can contribute even a little bit towards your journey to your Purpose.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

During my journey I got an opportunity to work with many fresh college graduates, first time managers and senior leaders. While I was working with them, I applied many of these principles and got fascinating results. We could achieve many things that were not even imagined by most of the other teams and we are proud of these achievements. Some of them didn’t believe in what we were aiming and some of them didn’t want to follow these principles. Over time, most of them believed in these principles and started following them. I want to acknowledge all of them to be with me in the journey. We shared many memorable and joyful occasions and achievements together. I am sure that they cherish those occasions as well. I want to acknowledge their faith and support here and take the book forward.
1. Introduction
––––––––
Personality development has been a buzzword for quite some time now. There are many books and courses available and many people have been trying to develop their personality. Even though I never attended any such course, I have been working on enhancing my personality for last 18 years consciously and may be many more years subconsciously. This might also be true with many of you. You might feel, oh my god this guy is working on it for so many years and he is still continuing to work on this? Probably a personality development course is better than his approach because it does the trick in just 5 or 10 days.
In this process, I realized that, for most of us, our personality is already developed. What we need to do, is to enhance our personality and to enhance our personality, we really need to know much more about our personality. Any attempt to enhance your personality may work once you thoroughly understand your personality. In spirituality, it is said that it’s all about searching the true self. This is also true for personal change. First you shall know who you are and then work on becoming who you would want to be.
Usually people attend personality development trainings or read books when they feel that life is unfair and they need to really do something about what’s going in their lives. This is also a good indication that our personality is developed and we are able to deal with most of the events in our life. There are times when we feel that we shall be in better control of our life. What it also means is we need to adopt a change. I am a big believer of this.
Usually the personality development courses cover many skills in a very short time, say 5 days and when we go back to work, we forget everything or apply very few learnings. Sometimes the content is irrelevant because industry works differently. I personally think if we want, we are all capable of learning new skills. Many times, we don’t feel the need. One of the reasons behind this is that successful people known to us may or may not possess such skills and we also wonder about what do they really do differently. We look at their external behaviour and work on copying it. Later, we realize that even copying the skill didn’t work and then wonder, what is that will help us to reach the next level. In my experience, many people ask this question after some unexpected event like failure in an exam or unexpected appraisal in the company. During next one month after such event most of the people go back to their routine work and forget everything else. Even though, best time to enhance personality is during school/college days but interestingly, students are so busy in various other activities that they never feel the need of enhancing their personality till they start working.
There are few courses in the school/college about personality development and they cover so much of theory about our personality that by the time we reach the end of the course we are exhausted. There are many self-help books that also cover various aspects of personality development but there is no structure to it and how many books are you going to read on this topic? Many personality development course trainers may or may not have tried whatever they talk or explain.
Considering many such things I thought of coming up with a book that includes the summary of my learnings in last 18 years. This book is a recipe of everything that I learnt from many different leaders, tried it in my personal as well as professional life and it worked for me. I have made every attempt to keep the book short and to the point to make sure that you can use it anytime as a ready reference in any situation. Everybody has their own learnings from their life and I certainly believe they are correct learnings for that person. The overall strategy can always be adopted but it needs to be finetuned to match your nature. This book is about the high-level strategy and you have free hand to finetune the strategy and adapt it in your life.
I have presented this strategy in front of many graduates and it was much appreciated, so I am confident that this is going to make so much difference in your life once you start applying it in your personal as well as professional life.
This book is all about WHAT. You have freedom to decide HOW, based on your nature and circumstances. This book also offers a framework that works on tuning various parts of your brain, your attitudes, behaviours, habits, skills and also helps you to explore the power of the subconscious. This is a holistic approach to personality change. It also offers a short, sweet and to the point explanation by removing lot of theory and many irrelevant concepts.
I am confident that this book will help you think and internalize to come up with your own action plan. Some people may wonder about why I didn’t explain the ‘How’ part of personal change. First reason behind it is as follows. ‘How’ is much context specific. How is also specific to your nature. For example, suppose you are working on your attitude and behaviour and you want to add value. A home maker may add value differently than a working woman and a hardworking person may add value differently than a strategic person. Even the idea of value may differ at home than in office and it may be different in rural or urban areas.
All the effective and continuously evolving people or leaders had a Purpose. Higher the purpose quicker is the upliftment. Even in my life, I was able to evolve faster during the time when I had a higher purpose. Purpose is the life force that keeps you on the right track. Day by day, purpose is becoming more and more important as we are able to fulfil our needs early in life and look for the next level accomplishments. If the purpose is unidentified, either life becomes stagnant or the focus is shifted on unproductive areas. Sometimes even we devolve to lower levels. One more trend I have seen recently and it is called mid-life crisis. In general people continue doing things that give them solid reward till the age forty or so and later suddenly change their profession or leave job and focus on something that is very different.
In all, nobody can sustain without purpose for long enough. This is true for everything that you do. If you have a purpose, upliftment happens without any barrier. Due to this, I want to introduce this idea of purpose centric personal change. When the change is purpose centric, you already have opportunities to apply your learnings and so the learnings are long lasting. Even the changes that come due to upliftment are sustainable and the upliftment is continuous. I am certain that this approach will touch many lives in coming days. I can also tell you that you want to remember me and this book for many years.
