Chapter 1: Just What is Hashimoto’s Disease?
Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disorder is A condition in which your body’s immune system turns against some part of your body. Instead of protecting that part of you, your immune system goes into attack mode instead.
In this instance, the immune system is attacking your thyroid gland. Your thyroid gland is a large gland in your neck located just behind your Adam’s apple and is part of the endocrine system. This gland is ductless and secretes hormones that regulate growth and development by your rate of metabolism. The thyroid gland is butterfly shaped and you may have never given it much thought before now.
The thyroid gland makes hormones that control your metabolism. This affects your heart rate as well as how quickly your body can burn the calories you consume daily. Most adults as they get older find that their metabolism naturally slows down; it’s just a part of aging.
When you have Hashimoto’s Disease, however since the body’s immune system is attacking the thyroid, the thyroid will produce much fewer hormones and your body does not get what it needs. This
