About Dr. L. W. Lawrence
Chapter One – Introduction
This book is a synopsis of lessons taught, lived, and learned concerning the importance of leaders who understand others and who love being leaders. Helping others by leading others is the beauty of living. Acknowledging your gift for leadership and then cultivating your gift into an art and a science is your mission as a leader.
Mastering leadership begins with loving life. Seeds of leadership when nourished properly can grow into a beautiful bouquet of communication skills, scientific understanding of verbal and nonverbal language, strategic planning, management of conflict as it happens, and creative problem solving. These skills, when blended and practiced, develop over time with experience and result in a person who understands others, appreciates their differences, and facilitates their dreams.
Leadership starts within each of us and within our individual worlds defined by those we interact with routinely. It includes family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and those we depend on to make our individual worlds function as happy and healthy places. Within each of these individual places are opportunities to learn through interactions with others and challenges we face. Remember, no two persons are exactly the same so no one recipe works. Leadership is about understanding others and molding their opportunities to match their strengths. This takes an appreciation and awareness for others that is part instinct and part skill. Even persons who consider themselves natural-born leaders need skill development to make the most of leading others to be better than they were born to be.
Making the most of relationships with others by utilizing leadership concepts is the goal of this book. Understanding that our actions, thoughts, and feelings are generally the result of our own physical, psychological, and spiritual initiatives helps us consider consequences of unchecked emotions and actions. In other words, think before we speak or act. Consider others and how our influence can help or hinder their development.
This book starts with basic leadership foundation and covers limbs of leadership including personalities, communication basics, strategic planning, conflict management, and problem solving. When you understand how these elements work together, you can incorporate them into your daily lives and continuously develop your leadership skills.
Everything that you learn in this book can be practiced immediately and in every situation you encounter. Knowing that you are using tried and proven tactics to help others will make you feel better about yourself. You will understand different personality types and what motivates each type. You will use communication basics such as insightful listening. You will understand strategic planning and how essential it is for you as a leader to know where you are taking your team and how you are going to get there. When conflict arises, and it will, you will handle it professionally and become an astute problem solver.
Whether you plan to own your own business or lead a professional organization, the soft skills you will learn in this book will make you a better leader. Even if the only team you lead is within your household, the same concepts and practices apply. You can be a better spouse, parent, and sibling. Understanding the limbs of leadership facilitates understanding life.
As you read this book, think of ways to immediately employ what you are learning. Select areas for improvement to practice each day. Being a better listener, avoiding distracting fillers and non-words, practicing better eye contact and body language, or simply empathizing are ways to take what you learn in this book and make it a part of your commitment to helping others. If you will seriously dedicate yourself to becoming a better person, this book will help you.
The objectives of this book are:
Know the Limbs of Leadership
Understand Personalities
Communicate with Compassion
Practice Strategic Planning
Deal with Conflict
Problem Solve, and
Combine Leadership, Life, and Love into a winning combination
Chapter Two – Limbs of Leadership
Helping emerging leaders embrace the importance of motivating others begins with an understanding of the limbs of leadership. These limbs are not separate elements but a blended philosophy for success. Understanding leadership can be both easy and difficult. It
