    Akbar-Birbal - Tanvir Khan

    Akbar Gives up Alcohol

The great Emperor Akbar was a man of good habits. In his old age however, he started to consume alcohol to keep himself warm and avoid fatigue. He kept this bad habit a secret, but Birbal noticed a change in his behaviour and manner of speaking and guessed that alcohol must be the cause.

Deciding that he must do something to help his Emperor, Birbal went to Akbar’s chambers. There he changed around the placement of some things, leaving the room in a mess. He also found a bottle of wine and hid it inside his shawl. On his way out, he purposely ran off in front of the Emperor, so that he would be noticed.

Noticing that Birbal ran away with something hidden in his shawl, Akbar called him. When Birbal arrived he asked him, What have you hidden in your shawl?

Birbal denied he had anything and said, Nothing.

Akbar asked him again, and this time Birbal replied, It’s a parrot.

Akbar implored him once more and asked what he was hiding. The reply he got was, a horse.

Now Akbar was angry and he shouted at Birbal, demanding that he speak the truth.

Birbal replied, It is an elephant.

Then Akbar ran out of patience and asked Birbal in anger one last time. A donkey, said Birbal.

After some time when Akbar asked Birbal quietly, Birbal revealed the bottle of wine he was hiding. Akbar was very shocked when he saw the bottle and assumed that Birbal must be drunk.

In the evening, Akbar was seated in his court with his nine advisors, also called his nine gems. When Birbal arrived the Emperor asked how his health was. Birbal said he was healthy, which prompted Akbar to ask, Then why were you hiding the bottle of wine and answering my questions without any sense?

Birbal took this as an opportunity to cleverly explain the problems of drinking to the Emperor.

He said, " Lord, when you asked me the first time what I was hiding, I said nothing. This is because a man knows nothing after his first glass of alcohol. After the second glass, the man starts slurring and speaking in an unclear manner. That is why I said parrot. After the third glass, he starts neighing and jumping around like a horse. After the fourth glass, the man loses all his worries and cares and becomes like an elephant. The fifth glass turns man into a donkey, because he will do anything you order him to do. He will carry any amount of

weight on his back and take it where he is told to go. And finally my good Lord, the sixth glass makes man lose all his senses."

The Emperor was pleased with these words, but at the same time he was a bit restless as it was the time of his evening drink. He went to his chamber and saw that everything was cluttered and in a mess. Then he realized that Birbal knew his secret and was trying to help him get rid of his bad habit. Akbar realized his mistake and never drank any alcohol from that day onwards.

    Akbar is Defeated

One morning, the court assembled as usual. All the courtiers had taken their seats. The Emperor arrived soon thereafter, but Birbal’s seat was still empty.

Akbar waited for Birbal for a few minutes, but Birbal did not turn up. ‘This is strange,’ Akbar thought. ‘Birbal is never late for court.’

After waiting for some more time, Akbar sent a messenger to Birbal’s house. Birbal told the messenger that he would be coming along in a few minutes. The messenger came back with Birbal’s message. The court waited for some more time, but Birbal was nowhere to be seen.

Now Akbar started to get angry. He sent another messenger to Birbal and told him to bring him along this time.

‘Badshah is quite mad at you! Please come with me immediately!’ the messenger told Birbal. Birbal knew that if he sent back the messenger again, the Emperor might punish the messenger. So he went with the messenger.

At the court, Akbar was quite furious. He asked Birbal, ‘What happened, Birbal? Why were you ignoring my orders?’

Birbal replied, ‘My jahanpanah, I was not ignoring your orders. I had got ready to come to the court in the morning itself, but as soon as I made to leave, my youngest son started crying. So I had to calm him. That’s why I got late.’

‘Birbal, whom are you trying to fool here? It cannot take so much time to stop a baby from crying!’ said Akbar, still angry.

‘I speak the truth, Badshah. Let me explain it to you. When I was about to leave the house, the baby started crying. I asked him why he was crying. He did not reply and kept crying. So I patted him for a while, then played with him for some time. Then as soon as I began to walk out of the house, he started crying again.’

‘Is it really that difficult to make a child stop crying?’
