CHAPTER ONE
Georgiana Carrington's normally smiling. However, now her rosebud lips were pressed in a thin line of displeasure bordering on fury. Her eyebrows furrowed with anger as she paced back and forth down the length of her bedroom, her stocking clad feet sinking into the lush purple rug.
Normally the tastefully furnished bedroom has been Lady Georgiana's refuge and her spirits could be lifted simply by entering her chamber and soaking the comfortable, cherished surroundings.
Half a dozen years ago when her mother had insisted on giving their property a face lift, Georgiana had joyfully thrown out the conservative heavy furnishing and shadowy wallpapers. She'd chosen a silver and purple colour scheme to produce a light, airy texture to the suite of chambers.
However, for once not even the gorgeous draperies in dark purple, the silvery bedding or the classic furniture tastefully arranged within her rooms could lift her spirits. Her mind was in turmoil and she was fuming.
She wanted to throw something at someone but did not know precisely whom she could blame for her present plight. The messenger who had brought the news to her parents? Her grandfather who'd made this monumental decision regarding her entire life without even bothering to talk with her? Her parents who'd consented without asking for her input? Or should her anger be steered towards the haughty Duke who thought he could lay claim to her?
At length she ceased her pacing and dropped straight back on the silken sheets of her large bed flanked on either side by French windows and then groaned out loudly. The truth of the matter was that it made no real difference who'd decided this; the one thing that mattered was that a choice had been made. The one that everybody expected her to abide by. However, she knew she couldn't.
For most of her nineteen years Georgiana had always gotten her way in life. As the sole daughter of exceptionally wealthy, aristocratic parents, she had been spoiled rotten and had been raised such as a princess, with a gold spoon in her mouth. Therefore it wasn't any real surprise that she owned a fiery temper and might be extremely stubborn.
However, those flaws were outweight by a naturally sweet and kind disposition and also a playful, generous spirit. Everybody adored Georgiana because she loved everybody. There was no haughtiness in her personality therefore people flocked to her to appreciate her friendship instead of envying her exceptional beauty and great wealth.
Even though she was a highly popular young lady, Georgiana only counted Laura Shropton as her truest and dearest friend. The two had been inseparable since they were toddlers and did everything together.
As soon as Georgiana had been told the earth shattering news, a maid was dispatched post haste into the Shropton household. While Georgiana waited for Laura to arrive, she wrestled with her issue.
From a very young age Georgiana had been an incorrigible dreamer, she'd lived in a bubble of happiness sheltered from the cruelties and hardships of the world. She'd imagined her very first season, the beautiful gowns and balls and parties, and finding love in the midst of all the handsome men she would meet. She'd imagined being swept off her feet by a man who loved her fiercely, one who would be ready to lay down his life for her.
And now on the cusp of her proper debut
