About this ebook

Cain

I'm Cain, a mountain ranger, and I've lived in the mountains of Colorado for years.

I love the outdoor way of life and I'm at my happiest when I'm in the fresh air with my dog, Ace.

I never really thought much about love because I was already happy in my life and I just couldn't see that altering.

But everything changed when Lyla walked, or rather fell, into my life.

She's got all the curves in all the right places and for a city girl she's certainly got that feisty frontier spirit. I just hope I can persuade her to stay.

Lyla

All I wanted was a taste of adventure, away from the city life I had always known, and Colorado seemed like a great place to visit. But I should have been better prepared.

The mountains are always a dangerous place. Wild animals, rough terrain and of course, bad weather.

So when I fell and twisted my ankle that really shook me up. I wondered how I would get down again, until Cain showed up.

His cabin in the woods was like another world and while he might be a bit rough round the edges he's the sort of man I always dreamed of.

Question is, am I ready to move from the city and spend my life in the wilderness?

Are you craving a sweet insta-love story? No cliffhangers? Guaranteed HEA? Cain is the perfect short, steamy read you've been waiting for.

    Lyla

Golden leaves that have fallen from the towering maple and spruce trees crunch under my boots as I wander through the sprawling mountain park.

You are totally rocking this, Lyla! I whisper to myself under my breath before grunting and hefting my heavy backpack from one shoulder to the other. Inside the backpack, I’ve stored my hydro flask, an extra pair of shoes, and, of course, some tasty snacks.

I’ve only been exploring the Coloradoan trail for a few hours, but I'm out of breath and my legs are already sorer then after one of those intense Pilates classes at the gym I'm always skipping. The trail is steeper and rougher than I expected, and the ground is slippery from the heavy rainstorm yesterday. I'm already exhausted, but every slightly-chilled breeze that ruffles my blond curls is delightfully scented with pine and earth and fresh air.

Being out here alone with nature is worth the bugs and my aching legs. This is nothing like what I'm used to back in the city. The mountains are invigorating and beautiful in every way.

No one would leap to call me an outdoorsy type of girl, that’s for sure, but now that I'd turned twenty-three, I’d decided it was time for a real adventure. For years, I've been growing tired of the skyscrapers and smog and pot-holed roads of the city. I’ve longed for a quiet night where I can gaze up at the starry skies without having to squint through a neon-lit haze.

This city girl can totally handle a little bit of rocky wilderness...hopefully.

I’d be lying if I claimed my friends and family were very pleased when I told them I planned to spend a night or two out here in the park. They’d asked a ton of annoying questions about food and water and camping supplies – but they were way too caught up in the tiny details. They didn't see the big picture! A girl doesn’t need anything but fresh air and a mountain hike to get by!

However, now that I'm out here and my feet hurt and my tummy is grumbling, I'm starting to wonder if they weren’t on to something when they told me I’d better be more prepared.

Shaking my head, I carry on forward. My boots squish noisily in the soft mud with every step I take. I pause for a moment, considering a pretty pine tree and wondering if it’s one I’d already passed before. The ranger at the station in the front of the park had given me a map. Unfortunately, at some point along the way, I managed to lose it.

Back when I first noticed the map was missing, I hadn't been too worried. Up until
