Introduction
Yoga's origin can be traced back to more than 5,000 years ago, but some researchers believe that yoga may be up to 10,000 years old. The word 'Yoga' first appeared in the oldest sacred texts, the Rig Veda, and is derived from the Sanskrit root Yuj
which means to unite.
Yoga is primarily a spiritual discipline that focuses on subtle science, on achieving harmony between the mind and the body of the individual. According to the yoga scriptures, the practice of yoga leads an individual to a union of consciousness with that of universal consciousness. It eventually leads to a great harmony between the human mind and body, man and nature.
The Vedas is a series of texts comprising songs, mantras, and practices used by the Vedic priests, the Brahmans. Yoga was slowly refined and developed by the Brahman and Rishis (mystical seers) who documented their practice and belief in the Upanishads, a vast work containing more than 200 scriptures.
According to modern philosophers, anything in the world is merely a reflection of the same quantum firmament. One who experiences this oneness of life is considered being in yoga and is referred to as 'Yogi,' having achieved a condition of liberation referred to as Mukti, Nirvana, or Moksha. So the goal of yoga is self-realization, to overcome all kinds of sufferings leading to 'The State of Liberation’ (Moksha) or 'Freedom' (Kaivalya).
And yoga is not just for spiritual progress, it provides multiple health advantages as well, such as enhancing endurance, reducing depression, and improving overall wellness and fitness. It's a wonderful mind-body practice that encourages relaxation when you practice linking breathwork (Pranayama) to poses (Asanas). In addition, a recent study has also related the benefits of all types of yoga to enhanced bone density and better sleep quality.
As yoga has grown into mainstream popularity, many styles and variations have emerged in the wellness space. This centuries-old Eastern philosophy is now widely practiced and taught by people of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds.
There are 10 primary types of yoga. With so many different types, it may be a little difficult to determine which type is appropriate for you. But remember that there's no right or wrong—just that one might not be right for you at this moment.
You’ve to ask yourself what's important to you in your yoga practice: Are you searching for a sweaty, intense practice? Or are you searching for a more meditative, gentler practice that looks more appealing?
Like any sort of exercise, choose something you want to do; Bikram or Iyengar will attract you if you're a detailed person. If you're more of a free spirit, Vinyasa or Aerial yoga could be fun.
I've made a complete series on all 10 types of yoga. This is Kripalu Yoga; others are also available!
So, What is Kripalu Yoga?
Kripalu Yoga is a modern style of yoga derived from ancient Hatha Yoga tradition. Kripalu is more than a style of yoga or a state of mind—it's a whole emotional, physical, and spiritual experience.
Kripalu appeals to those who wish to practice both physically and spiritually to better their health and well-being. The gentle and individual approach makes it a great option for practitioners who can benefit from an adaptive practice. This includes those with arthritis, the aged, and anybody who might be overweight. Kripalu is also a perfect introductory practice for almost anyone who has never performed yoga before.
While most yoga styles prioritize meditation and breathing, Kripalu Yoga gives equal importance to mind, body, and soul. It consists of a series of asanas in no specific order, followed by pranayamas and relaxation. The goal of Kripalu Yoga is to direct the consciousness of the yogi inwards by focusing on the flow of prana or life force energy. People of all age groups and fitness levels can perform this form of yoga.
With common origins in ancient yogic scriptures and literature, Kripalu Yoga evolved primarily from the teachings of Swami Kripalvananda. Kripalvanandji, also known as Kripalu, experienced a range of movements and, as he explored them, discovered that they were Hatha Yoga postures. His lessons were a combination of movements, breathing exercises, and hand gestures.
Amit Desai, a native of India and a disciple of Swami Kripalu, took the teachings to the United States in the 1960s and founded the first Kripalu ashram in Pennsylvania. Swami Kripalu spent 4 years in this ashram, where he gave a series of lectures to senior Kripalu Yoga practitioners.
Today, Kripalu Yoga still offers a blend of classic asanas, though not particular sets or patterns, plus breathing techniques/pranayamas, and numerous relaxing and soothing practices. Practice emphasizes following the flow of energy, observing the mind without judgment, cultivating kindness, and other constructive introspection. It stresses activity at your own pace, self-acceptance, and adaptability. If the aim is to awaken one's energy, Kripalu Yoga is the best way to do it.
As per this style of yoga, you should practice the way you live your daily life. And, while it gives equal importance to pranayamas, asanas, and meditation, it mainly focuses on the body.
In the Kripalu session, each individual learns to find his or her unique degree of intensity on a given day by focusing inward. You focus on your 'press points' and choose poses that better fit the body. Sessions typically begin with soft stretches accompanied by asana practice and finish with final relaxation and meditation.
You can call it a gentle Hatha Yoga practice with a caring approach. It focuses on meditation, physical healing, and spiritual growth that flow from the yoga mat into your daily life. It helps you to understand and respect your body. With time, practitioners are taught to observe their thoughts without judgment and embrace and accept themselves as they are.
Kripalu Yoga is great for those who want to enhance their overall well-being. It focuses on various aspects of well-being, including better living, spirituality, lifestyle, fitness, healing, and new ways of looking at the cosmos. Practitioners can discover ways to calm and strengthen their minds, bodies, and hearts to ease tension, detoxify their systems, and lose weight.
In the initial sessions, yoga poses are performed only for a brief amount of time, since the effects of prana on the individual's body are swift and profound. However, after they have advanced, they are required to hold poses for a longer period.
Also, as Kripalu Yoga stresses acceptance and adaptability, it fits well for all sorts of individuals, including those who feel a little out of place. And it is particularly helpful to those who are going through a tough phase or are suffering from a physical disability.
Kripalu Yoga practice is gentle and adapted to the individual's body abilities, which is why it's easy to perform and anyone can do it. It is ideal for beginners and can be done by anybody, regardless of age, size, ability, or circumstances.
Because this type of yoga can be a great way to change yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually, it's a popular style of yoga, and everyone should try it out.
So, are you interested in learning all about how Kripalu Yoga can benefit you? This is a comprehensive guide to take a closer look at what this yoga style can do for you and how you can master it for your overall well-being.
Covering the fundamentals of each practice in-depth, and how to correct the most common errors, this Kripalu Yoga Guide has left nothing to help you attain physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Science Behind Kripalu Yoga
If you’re curious about the science behind Kripalu asanas, meditation, and pranayama, then come and learn how these practices will strengthen your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Yoga is considered to be a system of raising awareness and reducing diseases. It was able to reach the mainstream by introducing itself as a tool with several advantages, including decreased stress, enhanced relaxation, and greater flexibility. It continued to grow across gyms as something that cultivates aerobic ability and builds muscle. But several gyms that offer yoga emphasize physical fitness without teaching the basic self-awareness that separates yoga from other exercises.
The original context of yoga was the practice of spiritual evolvement, to be aware of our existence and surrounding. Yoga aimed to develop discernment, mindfulness, self-regulation, and higher consciousness within the individual. As the gap between those pursuing physical fitness and those seeking spiritual development widened, the lack of awareness and commitment to the inner self separated the practitioner from his body.
We believe in ‘being compassionate’ in Kripalu Yoga; that’s what Kripalu means in Sanskrit. It’s possible to have a yoga practice that goes beyond the physical through compassionate self-awareness.
Kripalu Yoga is one of the many that is founded on the principle that you can practice just as much as how you can live your life.
