    Thank you. x

    ‘I’m just not ready, Jase.’

He’s not listening to me. I don’t know how many times I have to tell him. We stand on the street outside the small beachside restaurant where his parents got engaged thirty years earlier, where he’s invited all our family and friends along to witness his after-dinner proposal. What was he thinking? What are they thinking this minute? For of course I’ve turned him down. They won’t understand it. He certainly doesn’t so I tell him again, ‘I’m not ready.’

He shakes his head. ‘I’m beginning to think you never will be. It’s been six years, Áine.’

‘You shouldn’t have sprung it on me. You know I don’t like surprises.’

‘It can’t have been that much of a surprise after all this time. It’s not as if we haven’t spoken about it. I thought you loved me.’

    ‘Of course I loved you.’

That came out wrong. I can tell by his face, so I quickly amend it. ‘I do love you, Jase, but I’m not ready to get married, not yet.’

‘Why don’t we take a walk by the beach?’ he says, reaching for my hand.

Usually that would make me feel safe. Not tonight, though, so I snatch my hand back and snap, ‘I need some space,’ then head off along the street without a backward glance.

He doesn’t get the message and I hear his footsteps hurrying after me.

    ‘Áine,’ he calls.

With a sigh, I stop. ‘What?’

‘I’m not letting you walk around the streets in the dark on your own. I’m coming with you.’

‘Suit yourself.’ I shrug and march off towards the beach.

When I reach the foreshore, I kick off my shoes and walk across the cool sand to the water’s edge. It’s dark yet the full moon illuminates the water, creating an illusion of lightness. This place has always been a sanctuary for me, somewhere I feel connected to something deep, but it’s also something that holds me back from embracing the life he is offering.

What is wrong with me? Jase is everything I could ever hope for in a life partner and yet I can’t
